Introduction
The OKUMA MU-5000V(L) Multi-Function Machining Center is part of the next generation of Okuma
vertical five axis machining centers. The machine builds on OKUMA’S experience of double column
design high accuracy, high rigidity machining centers along with the full five axis cutting capability. The
machine provides ease of operation with accessibility to working area and loading position. High
productivity is assured with the machine’s advanced Five Axis Multitasking capabilities and long term
capability is enhanced by the availability of peripheral equipment including pallet pools and matrix
automatic tool changers.
The OKUMA MU-5000V(L) has the latest CNC full 5-axis simultaneous control system The OKUMA OSP-
P300A, it is equipped with a high speed, high power motor with the options of either CAT 40/50 or HSK
A63/100 taper spindles and the option of turning mode on the C axis table for added processing
capability.
This model incorporates a high-speed 32-position automatic tool changer and 1968 ipm rapid traverse,
resulting in a powerful production capability. Control is by OKUMA’s OSP-P300MA control system for the
mill only specification and OSP-P300SA for the mill with C axis turning. It includes the patented OSP
absolute position encoders which do not require a zero return and the latest Easy Operation screens and
software.

Power and Torque
Main Spindle Drive
The MU-5000V is available with either NT 40, NT 50, HSK A63
or HSK A100 taper spindles and speed ranges from 6,000 to
25,000 rpm. All spindles use the unique Okuma spindle drive to
accurately controls input commands and continuously monitors
actual performance.
Additionally turning capability is an available option with the
HSK Wide Range spindles.

All the spindles use OKUMA design symmetrical cooling of the
housing to provide the best thermal stability and accuracy
during operation.

CONSTRUCTION
Machine Construction
The main components of the MU-5000V(L) vertical machining center are as follows:

Materials
These components are produced from high
tensile strength (40,000#) alloyed cast iron
which is carefully stress relieved. The bed
casting is designed with reinforcing ribs for
increased stability and load carrying
capacity.
The column utilizes a reinforced box
construction to increase stiffness, resist
vibration and minimize deflection during
high thrust loads.

Saddle & Table Support


The machine saddle is designed to provide full
support of the machine table in the Y axis
movement. Good machine design and fitting
allows for exact perpendicularity of the spindle
head.
The machine table, holding the work piece, is
supported by the fixed saddle and bed and is
capable of supporting full table load while holding
alignment
Extra width in the saddle design prevents the table from overhanging the bed. The column and bed
are joined at the column flange to produce alignment bed, column, & saddle tolerances of 0.00020”
or better in full travel of the X, Y, and Z axis.

CONSTRUCTION

Axis Drives
Ball Screws
Powerful, robust high precision ball-screws generate sideway movement to all three axes of the MU-
5000V(L). The ball screws are based on unique Okuma designs and exacting performance
standards. They are directly coupled to special Okuma axis drive servomotors.

Contrary to commercial drive systems, the custom Okuma servomotors precisely match the electrical
and mechanical prerequisites of the MU-5000V(L) performance requirements. An essential element in
the drive system is the unique Okuma absolute position digital feedback encoder connected directly
to the shaft of each Okuma servo drive motor.

The Ballscrews are precision mounted on the center of any controlled axis and are preloaded at the
end of the ball screw opposite the drive system. The precision ball screws are supported by a twin set
of thrust bearings mounted in ball screw support brackets at each end of the ball screw.

Pre-load is set during machine construction by careful hand sizing and fitting. Once set, the
pre-load is maintained by a twin set of ball screw mounting brackets supporting both ends of
the screw.

The ball screw mounting is designed for both tension and compression for thermal
compensation and control of ball screw growth.

Machine Lubrication
The MU-5000V(L) is lubricated automatically by a grease system that is programmed to
automatically apply grease at appropriate intervals of time providing long interval
maintenance.

FLUID SYSTEMS

ATC and Tooling Capacity


32-Tool Magazine
The MU-5000V(L) tool changer is simple, reliable and extremely productive. The tool changer has a
capacity of 32 tools [opt.48 – chain type and 64 plus Matrix type], held in a cast iron carousel magazine.
Rotation of the tool magazine is powered by an Okuma servomotor, with position monitored and
controlled by an Okuma absolute encoder. This design eliminates sub-arm and its mechanism, stepping
motors, and clutches.

Spindle orientation for tool change is accomplished by the Okuma spindle drive and magnetic pulse
generator on the spindle unit, which accurately orients and holds the spindle in position.

Automatic Tool Changer


Manual spindle rotation and tool changing is available at the spindle head the operation panel for
convenient tool adjustment and tool tip inspection
Pull Studs
An initial quantity of 20 pull studs is included in the Base Specification. Additional quantity of pull studs
made to OKUMA specification (hardened and ground) are available either through OKUMA or its Partners –
Velocity Products.

Chips and Coolant


The machine table design provides excellent chip disposal from the working area to the standard in
machine coil conveyor that discharges into an optional rear discharge lift up chip conveyor.
The Base Machine Specification includes the in-machine coil conveyor, coolant tank and pumps and
preparation for chip conveyor. Chip conveyors are available options, various styles of conveyors
(filter, hinge or magnetic) are available to be selected based on material application.

For machining operations where large quantities of chips are produced, an optional lift and drop
chip conveyor is appropriate. Several types are available selectable based on material application.

• The machine as standard is prepared for 1,000 psi (7 Mpa) - rotary coupling
and interface
• A factory supplied 1,000 PSI separate system with bag filtering is an available
option or alternative systems can be purchased.

GUARDING AND ENCLOSURE

Easy Access
The operating area of the machine is totally
enclosed and has a low friction sliding front
door with observation window. The X axis
travel trunnion table offer the best
configuration for part load/unload, part
inspection and easy access to the tooling.

SAFETY
Safety Features
The MU-5000V is equipped with a variety of safety devices to prevent accidents and injuries. However,
it is strongly advised that operators use the machine carefully and not rely solely on these devices.
Complete safety precautions are found in the operation manual.

♦ Programmed soft limits are used to provide each axis with stroke end limits.
♦ Extreme axis limits use limits for dampening the contact before motor overload occurs.
♦ Emergency stop push button, slide hold push button, and alarm indicator on operational panel.
♦ Fluid levels are interlocked
♦ Full enclosure guarding with standard access door interlock for complete chip and coolant
containment.
♦ Measured 72dB level at operator station at no load run of max spindle speed and max rapid
traverse of axes. Measurement method available on request.

ACCURACIES

X, Y and Z axis Accuracy


The rigid machine structure coupled with a high response positioning system provides the following
machine performance:

• Bidirectional positioning accuracy A - X axis 0.00047" (0.0120 mm) full stroke.


• Bidirectional positioning accuracy A - Y axis 0.00047" (0.0120 mm) full stroke.
• Bidirectional positioning accuracy A - Z axis 0.00039" (0.0100 mm) full stroke.

• Bidirectional repeatability R - X axis 0.00031". (0.008 mm)


• Bidirectional repeatability R - Y axis 0.00031". (0.008 mm)
• Bidirectional repeatability R - Z axis 0.00023". (0.006 mm)

These positioning guarantees are based on standards ISO 230-2. ISO 10791-4:1998 and JIS
B6336-4:2000.
These are part of a series of measurement that are made and recorded. They are made by laser
interferometer with pitch error compensation applied, the machine leveled and a warm up
performed before measurement.

Angle measured in increments of 30 degrees.

• A axis repeatability ± 2 Seconds

30 degree positioning move measured seven times.

Geometry Inspection
Laser alignments and positioning accuracy checks are among over 200 quality tests performed on
every machine. Lead screw and backlash compensations are measured during final inspection and
maintained in the control to insure and guarantee the above stated accuracies.

Inspection data sheets accompany each machine tool showing above tolerances and actual data.
