Stator Lamination

The document discusses the construction of a stator for a synchronous generator. It describes how steel laminations are punched and stacked to form the stator core. Stator windings are made of copper coils in a star configuration to eliminate harmonics. The winding bars are made of insulated copper strips and wrapped in resin-poor mica tape for insulation and protection against thermal stresses and deformations at high voltages and temperatures.

1 Stator lamination:
To form a stator core, high quality silicon steel plates of little core loss
are used and punch them with a die in such segments as shown in the
illustration. After giving varnish treatment, pile them up in a stator frame.
In the segments at the end parts of the core, provide slits at the tooth part
as shown in the let segments of the above illustration, whereby to prevent the
increase of end stray load loss.

3.2 Stator windings:

The stator winding of all synchronous generators is star connected with
neutral earthed. This arrangement has the advantage that the winding has to be
insulated to earth for the phase voltage and not the line voltage. Star connection
also has the advantage that it eliminates all triple frequency harmonics from the
line voltage. Fractional slot windings are used to reduce higher order harmonics
and pitch of the windings is so selected that 5 th and 7th harmonics are greatly
reduced.
Copper material is used to make the coil. This is because
I. Copper has high electrical conductivity with excellent mechanical
properties.
II. Immunity from oxidation and corrosion.
III. It is highly malleable and ductile metal.

3.5 Stator winding bars:

These are made from insulated copper strips to reduce eddy current
losses. In large capacity machines we use ROEBEL bars. These coils were
constructed after considering the skin effect losses. In the straight slot portion,
the strips are transported by 360 degrees. The transportation is done to ensure
that all the strips occupy equal length under similar conditions of the flux. High
purity copper strips are used to make the coils. This results in high strength
properties at higher temperatures so that deformations due to the thermal
stresses are eliminated. The high voltage is provided according to the resin poor
mica base of thermosetting epoxy system. Serval half overlapped continues
layers of resin poor mica tape are applied over the bars. The thickness of the
tape depends on the machine voltage.
