THE PIPE FRICITON LOSS TABLES FOR HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE PIPE WERE DEVELOPED USING THE

HAZEN - WILLIAMS FORMULA:

Hf = 0.2083(100/C)1.852(Q1.852/d4.866)

V = 0.408Q/d2

Where: V = flow velocity in feet per second (ft/sec)

Q = flowrate in gallons per minute (gpm)
d = inside diameter of pipe in inches
Hf = head loss due to friction in feet converted to equivalent pounds per square inch loss
per 100 feet of straight pipe.
C = Hazen Williams coefficient (150 for PVC & HDPE, 140 for PE, 100 for Steel)

1. The spreadsheet can be used for pipes for other diameters or class (pressure) ratings not shown in the PIA Stockwater Hand
2. The tab below labeled 'BLANK' can be used to compute headloss and velocities by entering pipe
specifics at the top of the page and then entering the Nominal Size, OD, and ID in the green cells.
3. The C value for the selected pipe can also be entered in the green cell.
4. Changing the flowrate value in column A will compute new results.
5. Velocities over 5 feet per second USE WITH CAUTION.

6. Joints and other fittings can contribute greatly to pressure loss. Of particular concern is insert barbed fittings for HDPE - the
represent a sudden contraction and expansion and reduce the flow cross section from that of the pipe. Best practice is to butt
weld HDPE at joints.
