Mix Design Report M35

The document outlines the concrete mix design process for M-35 grade concrete. Key steps include: 1) Selecting a target compressive strength of 43.25 MPa at 28 days. 2) Choosing a water-cement ratio of 0.44. 3) Calculating mix proportions of 435 kg/m3 cement, 625 kg/m3 fine aggregate, and 1,145 kg/m3 coarse aggregate. 4) The mix will be tested to verify it achieves the target compressive strength.

3) TARGET STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING

f’ck = fck + 1.65 S

or
f’ck = fck + X whichever is higher.
where,
f’ck= target average compressive strength at 28 days,
fck = characteristic compressive strength at 28 days,
S = standard deviation, and
X = factor based on grade of concrete.
From Table 2 of IS 10262: 2019, standard deviation, S = 5.0 N/mm2
From Table 1 of IS 10262: 2019, X = 6.5
Therefore, target strength using both equations, that is,
(a) f’ck = fck + 1.65 S
=35+1.65 x 5.0 = 43.25 N/mm2
(b) f’ck = fck + X
= 35 + 6.5 = 41.5 N/mm2

The higher value is to be adopted. Therefore, required strength will be 38.25 N/mm2 as
43.25 N/mm2> 41.5 N/mm2.

4) APPROXIMATE AIR CONTENT

From Table 3 of IS 10262: 2019, the approximate amount of entrapped air to be
expected in normal (non-air-entrained) concrete is 1.0 percent for 20 mm nominal
maximum size of aggregate.

5) SELECTION OF WATER CEMENT RATIO

From Fig. 1 of IS 10262:2019, the free water-cement ratio required for target strength of
43.25 N/mm2 is about 0.45 for the curve 3 (OPC 53). This is more than the maximum
value of 0.45 prescribed for ‘severe’ exposure for reinforced concrete as per Table 5 of IS
456.
Adopting design water cement ratio is 0.44 ≤ 0.45 , hence O.K.
6) SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT
From Table 4 of IS 10262: 2019, water content per cubic meter = 186 kg (for 50 mm
slump) for 20 mm aggregate.
Estimated water content for 75 mm slump (3% increase in water for 25 mm additional
slump)
= 186 x 1.03

Hence, the water content = 191.58 kg/m3

7) CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT

Water cement ratio = 0.44
Cementitious content = 435 kg/m3
From Table 5 of IS 456, minimum cement content for ‘severe’ exposure condition = 320
kg/m3
435 kg/m3> 320 kg/m3, hence O.K.

As per clause 8.2.4.2 of IS 456, the maximum cement content = 450 kg/m3. Hence O.K.

8) PROPORTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT

From Table 5 of IS 10262: 2019, the proportionate volume of coarse aggregate
corresponding to 20 mm size aggregate and fine aggregate (Zone-II) for water-cement
ratio of 0.50 = 0.62

In the present case water-cement ratio is 0.44. As the water-cement ratio is higher/lower
by 0.1, the proportion of volume of coarse aggregate is decreased/Increased by 0.012 (at
the rate of -/+ 0.01 for every +/- 0.05 change in water-cement ratio). Therefore,
corrected proportion of volume of coarse aggregate for the water-cement ratio of 0.4 =
0.62 + 0.012 = 0.632

Proportion of fine aggregate = 1- 0.632 = 0.368

9) MIX CALCULATIONS

The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows:

(a) Total volume = 1 m3

(b) Volume of entrapped air in wet concrete = 0.01m3
𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 1
(c) Volume of cement = 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡
× 1000

435 1
= 3.15
× 1000
= 0.138 m3
𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 1
(d) Volume of water = 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟
× 1000

191.58 1
= 1
× 1000

= 0.192 m3
(e) Volume of chemical admixture = 𝑁𝐴
(f) Volume of microsilica = 𝑁𝐴

(g) Volume of all in aggregate = [(a – b) – (c + d + e + f)]

= [(1-0.01) – (0.138+ 0.192 )]
= 0.66 m3
(h) Mass of coarse aggregate

= (f) × volume of coarse aggregate × specific gravity of coarse aggregate × 1000

= 0.66 × 0.632 × 2.76 × 1000

= 1151 kg

(i) Mass of fine aggregate

= (f) × volume of fine aggregate × specific gravity of fine aggregate × 1000

= 0.66 × 0.368 × 2.60 × 1000

=631.5 kg
