among 130 resi-
dents of the Preakness
Healthcare Center, as part of
their 20th consecutive year of
presenting Christmas in
July to local care facilities.
Some 50 Rotary volunteers
and guests participated in the
event.
Why July? Because this
is a vacation period when
friends and family are less
likely to visit those living in
the Center.
They brought music,
dancing, singing, Santa, and
lots of presents. In all, there
were some 1,000 gifts,
wrapped, packed and organ-
ized by Wayne Rotarians. Gift
bags were provided by the
Passaic Sheriff s Outreach
program.

iger Woods has fallen
from the top of the
leaders bulletins, the
player money list, the TV talk
shows; hes lost his best en-
dorsements, the magazine
covers, he is no longer the
talk of greatness and the man
to beat on the golf course. He
has fallen from Grace, ruined
his marriage to a wonderful
mother and a beautiful
woman, from what the public
saw as perfection at his pro-
fession and from his stoic and
focused demeanor in front of
the camera. I think his fail-
ures and performance on the
fairways of late, has generated
as much interest and public
comment, as his successes and
triumphs gained for him just
a few short years ago. Tiger
Woods has proven a lot of
things in his career, the most
of which is that he is a human
being,handicapped by the
frailties, desires, weaknesses
and emotions that go with it.
He proved not to be unbeat-
able; however, he elevated
the other players to his level
of play, like Roger Bannisters
breaking the 4 minute mile
for the first time in human
history in 1954. It took hun-
dreds of years for a man to run
that fast, where today, hun-
dreds of athletes can do it. It
took one man to prove that it
could be done and then oth-
ers quickly reached and sur-
passed Mr. Bannisters time.
The same will be said of Tiger
Woods accomplishments on
the course and I believe it will
be Tiger himself, in time,
making those comeback
statements while wearing the
Green Jacket once again at
the Masters. But, until his re-
turn to greatness and back to
the top of his game, the
sportscasters will continue to
chastise and mock him, the
fans will continue to revel in
his slump and the other play-
ers will have a chance to say
they beat the Great Tiger
Woods.
Though the public and
the reporters might count
him down and out, the play-
ers and his true fans under-
stand his talent and what a
threat he can be. When he
regains his focus, concentra-
tion and technique, he will
attack the game like he never
did before and I predict he
will be a better player, sur-
passing his best scores, com-
ing back with feats of
amazement everywhere on
the grass, sand and circum-
venting water hazards. He is
a young man who found too
much success, too quickly and
at too young an age. He has
the most recognizable face in
the world, not just the sports
world and the pressure to per-
form and constantly be in the
public eye proved too much
for him, for the moment.
After all of this he fired his
caddy, Steve Williams, (rea-
sons unknown) who found
immediate success working
with the Australian Adam
Scott. Tiger is only 35 years
old, a young man in an old
game with plenty of time for
a comeback. He has a new
coach and caddy and will
begin again despite the nega-
tive noise from the gallery
and press box.
So too, will the stock
market recover, despite the
many prognosticators predic-
tions of gloom and doom.
The economy willrecover, un-
employment will ease, banks
will lend again, the housing
market will once again gain
traction and prices will rise,
interest rates will increase on
savings vehicles, gold and sil-
ver prices willfall, 401k and
IRA values will once again
increase in value, consumer
confidence will rise and with
increased spending not far be-
hind. This is why they call
the markets cyclical. It has
always happened this way and
always will happen this way.
The big questions are: Will
you be ready for it? Will you
be positioned for it? Will you
take advantage of the de-
pressed prices of today to
profit tomorrow? Will you
take action? A question you
never want to ask yourself is:
Will you miss the boat?
Think about this for a
moment. If you are at least
40 years old, economic
malaise, such as we are cur-
rently experiencing, has hap-
pened in 1973, 1987, 1990,
1994, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008
and fortunes were made in
the years immediately follow-
ing by average and ordinary
working folks like us. Based
on historical facts that you
can chart and judge for your-
self and without picking indi-
vidual winning stocks, you
can benefit from the cyclical
events of the stock, bond and
housing markets, just like the
tycoons do. In most cases, a
minimum investment to get
started can be as low as a few
thousand dollars, maybe even
less. My message for this par-
ticular column is to put a lit-
tle Tiger in your tank. Its
time to get back in the game
and be an investor again.

what trend forecasters
see as the it items of the sea-
son. People looking to keep
abreast of certain styles or just
maintain a fresh supply of differ-
ent wardrobe options may find
that replenishing a closet can be
an expensive venture. But it
doesnt have to be.
Those without a set budget
may be able to afford monthly
shopping trips to add new pieces
to a wardrobe. However, the av-
erage person lives on a tighter
budget, and there may not be as
much room for discretionary
spending on clothing and acces-
sories. According to VisualEco-
nomics.com, a family of three
making about $64,000 per year
can expect to spend roughly 4
percent of those earnings on ap-
parel and services.
People interested in re-
freshing their selection of cloth-
ing more frequently should
consider alternative options
than buying retail. Here are

Clothing Swap
A good way to socialize
and switch-up a wardrobe is to
host a clothing swap party. In-
vite around 10 friends or family

apy, my shoulder and neck
pain has been progressively
worsening for years. What can

Next to spouses and inlaws,
faulty spinal mechanics is the
primary cause of most neck
pain. Functional problems of
the spine can usually be
traced to incorrect spinal
alignment due to abnormal
posture and previous trauma.
Closely associated with ab-
normal posture are other
causes of neck pain such as
repetitive strain, muscular
weakness, and degenerative
changes of the discs and
joints of the spine.
To find the right solution
for your particular problem,
you need to be accurately as-
sessed. Chiropractic physi-
cians are specialists in the
assessment and treatment of
muscle and joint problems,
including neck and neck-re-
lated pain. From a thorough
assessment, your chiropractor
can determine the most effec-
tive and appropriate course of
care. For example, Sandra
consulted her chiropractor for
help with neck pain that for
years had been getting worse.
She had tried various thera-
pies, exercise programs and
medication to find relief, to
no avail. When the chiro-
practor examined Sandra it
was apparent she had serious
malalignment of the verte-
brae in the lower part of her
neck. Infact, x-rays showed a
complete reversal of the nor-
mal cervical curve. Her chiro-
practor explained how her
neck pain was a direct result
of this abnormal spinal posi-
tion, which was causing
muscle weakness, disc com-
pression, nerve irritation and
gradual deterioration of her
spine.
Now that Sandra under-
stood why medication, work-
ing out and various therapies
were not the answer, she
chose to work hard to correct
the real problem: alignment
of her neck. Her treatment
involved specific, gentle chi-
ropractic adjustments and
other procedures to improve
joint mobility and restore
normal spinal curves and
alignment.The result? After
several months of dedicated
work Sandras x-rays demon-
strated near-normal spinal po-

ogs have a unique
way of introduction
to other dogs...they
sniff each others backsides.
They do this because each dog
has a unique scent that is
produced by their anal glands
or anal sacs. While many peo-
ple arent even aware that
these glands exist, they play
an important role in a dogs
behavior. They use this scent
to identify one another, as a
form of communication, and
when they were in the wild, as
a way to mark their territory
or scare off an enemy.
Anal glands are located
just beneath the skin on either
side of the anus. The glands
produce a foul and often fishy
smelling liquid. Whenever
your pet defecates, a small
amount of this liquid is ex-
creted, contributing to your
dogs personal fragrance. Most
people never even know that
these glands exist because in
most pets they dont cause any
problems. Although anal
glands can fail to empty
sufficiently and cause a
number of issues for your
pet.
The most common
problem with anal glands
occurs when the liquid
produced by the gland
becomes thickened; they
are unable to be ex-
pressed and cannot be
emptied. This results in
impaction which is ex-
tremely uncomfortable
for your pet. Typical signs
of anal gland impaction
include scooting (drag-
ging their rear ends along
the ground) or licking/biting at
their rear end. Sometimes
stools may become loose or
even a drop of blood can be
seen in them. The good news
is anal gland impaction can
usually be cleared up quickly
by your veterinarian. Your vet-
erinarian will manually express
or empty the anal glands. This
can be a onetime trip to the
vets office but for many dogs
anal gland impaction is an on-
going problem.
There are a variety of rea-
sons why a pet might have
trouble expressing its anal
glands. Sometimes it depends
on the thickness of the secre-
tion itself which may be too
thick to express easily. Also,
the consistency or bulkiness of
an animals stools can affect
anal gland function. Stools
which are too small or too soft
might not push on the glands
enough to cause expression.
That is why its important to
make sure your pet eats a
high quality diet which is
high enough in fiber to en-
sure large solid stools. A nat-
ural way to bulk the feces is
to add a small amount of
canned pumpkin to the diet.
An unfortunate sequel to
anal gland impaction is in-
fection and abscess of the
anal gland. If an impacted
anal gland is left untreated
and not expressed, abscesses
can develop fairly quickly. In
this case, your pet will expe-
rience moderate to severe
pain versus just discomfort.
The scooting or licking the
anal area becomes more fre-
quent and dogs will often
growl or try to bite when one
tries to touch them anywhere
in that general area. Anal
gland abscesses usually require
more invasive treatment like
lancing and draining the ab-
scess plus antibiotics. It is
therefore important to bring
your pet to your veterinarian as
soon as you notice any signs
that might indicate an anal
gland problem.
You are lucky if your pet
has never had an anal gland
problem. Now that you know
they exist, it is important to
watch for any signs of anal
gland problems in your pet and
to act promptly if they do.

D
id you ever notice the
little boy on the soccer
field who just could not
quite kick the ball, tripped over
people and had poor coordina-
tion when trying to dribble?
Or the little girl in ballet class
who had a difficult time imitat-
ing the teachers body move-
ments and sequencing the dance
steps? What about the first grad-
er on the playground who con-
stantly barged into other chil-
dren and just didnt seem to see
obstacles in front of him causing
him to trip and fall constantly?
Most people refer to these chil-
dren as clumsy, but there may be
a better explanation.
For the last 100 years poor
motor coordination or clumsiness
has been recognized as a problem.
Recently, the term Develop-
mental Coordination Disorder
(DCD) has been used when re-
ferring to children with motor co-
ordination difficulties. This is a
fairly common childhood disor-
der and is usually identified in
school age children between the
ages of 6-12. Studies indicate that
the prevalence of DCD is esti-
mated at 8-12% of all school-
aged children with more boys di-
agnosed than girls (2:1). As a re-
sult of the wide diversity in the
DCD diagnosis, finding its true
cause has been difficult and is un-
known at this time. Some spec-
ulate that DCD can be caused by
an injury that occurs before or
during the birthing process. Oth-
ers say that DCD is a result of
damage on the cellular level.
In order for a child to be diag-
nosed with DCD it must impact
on some aspect of his or her life.
These children often exhibit
poor balance, tripping on un-
even surfaces, an awkward run-
ning pattern, dropping items,
frequent tripping and falling,
difficulty imitating body posi-
tions and following 2-3 step
motor directions. These motor
problems will affect the childs
ability to complete motor ori-
ented tasks. Because of these
problems, children often per-
form poorly in sports demon-
strating slow reaction and
movement times. Since these
children do not feel successful
when participating in sports,
they may feel insecure. This in-
security can lead to a more
sedentary lifestyle for the child
thus causing poor muscular
strength, decreased muscle force
and ultimately weight gain. Un-
fortunately, children with DCD
may experience other difficul-
ties, besides the physical limita-
tions. These children may
exhibit psychosocial problems.
Because these children may not
excel in one area, they may seek
less socially desirable types of at-
tention. They may be the class
clown or act out more often
than the other children. Ado-
lescents with DCD have been
found to have fewer friends,
lower self esteem and more anx-
iety than their peers without
DCD.
Historically parents have
been told not to worry about
their childs clumsiness. The
child will outgrow the problem.
However, current research
states that children do not out-
grow clumsiness and without in-
tervention, will not improve.
Motor control processes
are complex and depend on in-
tegrating the sensory, percep-
tual, cognitive and motor
systems. A skilled Pediatric
Physical Therapist can work on
integrating all of these systems
to assist the child in working to-
ward age appropriate functional
goals. By breaking down com-
ponents of a task, practicing
each component repetitively
and translating the new skill
into the childs natural environ-
ment, motor skills can be
greatly improved, confidence
and self assuredness enhanced
and enthusiasm and participa-
tion in sports and age appropri-
ate games greatly increased. I
have worked with hundreds of
children with symptoms that
fall into this category with ex-
cellent and permanent results
that both parents and children
are greatly pleased with.

odays kids are busier
than ever before. Be it
the increasingly com-
petitive nature of scholastic
life or the increase of two-in-
come households where kids
need something to do other
than come directly home af-
ter school, children today are
much busier than their
school-aged counterparts of
yesteryear.
While it can be fun and
beneficial for kids to partici-
pate in extracurricular activi-
ties, finding the right fit isnt
as easy as it sounds. When
helping kids find an extracur-
ricular activity, its best to
consider a host of factors. Es-
pecially keep in mind that
not all kids are the same with
respect to interests. And what
was enjoyed by their parents
wont necessarily be enjoyed
by them.
Getting Started
The best place to start is
to speak to kids about their
interests. Just because Dad
loved playing football doesnt
mean Junior is destined to be
a gridiron great. Kids have
their own interests, and those
interests can be cultivated
with the right extracurricular
activity. For example, a cre-
ative child might enjoy an
after-school art class a couple
of times per week. Parents
should also consider extracur-
ricular that can help kids
grow as people. For instance,
a child whos shy in public but
loves hamming it up at home
might embrace an after-
school theater program.
Once options have been dis-
cussed with kids, take in a ses-
sion or two before
committing to anything. The
shy youngster might visit the
local theater program and
enjoy it thoroughly, or he or
she might decide against it.
Either way, a visit will give
kids and parents a sense of
what the program is like and
whether or not its the right
fit. When visiting, observe
the nature of the program. Is
it an encouraging, vibrant en-
vironment? Do the adults and
kids involved appear to be
having fun?

Parents want their kids
to be as safe after school as
they are during it. When
looking for an extracurricular
activity, inquire about the
staff-to-child ratio and about
the staff s professional back-
ground. Any staff-to-child
ratio that is greater than 12:1
likely indicates a program
that is understaffed, which
mean kids could wont get the

Federation of North Jersey, is
expanding its Kosher Meals on
Wheels program in Wayne. The
Meals on Wheels Program pro-
vides hot, nutritious Kosher
meals to people age 60 and over,
or those younger who have a
disability and who are unable to
cook or shop. Volunteer drivers
bring needed meals, offer a
smile, a greeting and a personal
contact to the elderly, many of
whom seldom get out. Drivers
are needed to deliver meals two
times a month. Presently, we
are accepting referrals for people
who would like to receive meals.

Consider a Childs Grade
Level
A childs age and grade
level should also be consid-
ered when choosing an ex-
tracurricular activity. Consult
teachers about finding an age-
appropriate extracurricular
activity. For example, less
competitive activities that
emphasize fun might be more
appropriate for kids in kinder-
garten and the first grade. For
second graders, activities not
offered at school, like learn-
ing to play an instrument, can
help cultivate a childs inter-
est in a noncompetitive envi-
ronment. As kids reach third
grade and beyond, consider
more rules-based activities,
including team sports, as kids
at that age are more capable
of understanding rules and
handling losing than younger
kids. As children get older
and move on to middle
school, look for activities that
reinforce learning and help
develop a young persons
character, including their
ability to interact with others.
When looking for an ex-
tracurricular activity for kids,
parents should consider a host
of factors, including the
childs interests and age.

omeowners who
have had prior issues
with mold know just
how pesky a mold
problem can be.
When mold spores
land on surfaces that
are wet, mold may
begin to grow in-
doors. And the
growth of mold takes
just a matter of
hours. According to
the National Associ-
ation of Home
Builders, all it takes
is 48 hours for a
moist environment
combined with room
temperature to pro-
duce mold growth.
When mold
does begin to grow,
homeowners will
notice a less-than-
welcoming aroma
often characterized
as musty. In addi-
tion, mold growth,
which is most com-
mon in areas of the home like
the kitchen, bathroom and
basement where humidity and
moisture levels are higher, can
be unsightly and unhealthy.
In 2004, the Institute of Med-
icine linked indoor exposure
to mold with upper respiratory
tract symptoms, cough and
wheeze in people who, prior
to exposure, were healthy.
The IOM also found exposure
to mold can exacerbate
asthma conditions for people
who already have asthma and
even linked respiratory illness
in otherwise healthy children
to exposure to mold.
What such research
highlights is the em-
phasis homeowners
must place on remov-
ing mold from their
homes. While mold
is a natural part of
the environment
that is impossible to
eliminate entirely,
homeowners can
take steps to stop
mold growth in their
homes and protect
themselves and their
families along the
way. When address-
ing a mold problem,
keep in mind the po-
tentially negative im-
pact mold can have
on your health and
dress accordingly.
Wear long sleeves,
gloves, protective
goggles, and even a
mask or respirator that covers
the nose and mouth to reduce
your risk of developing a res-
piratory illness.
Fix leaky pipes and addi-
tional water problems. Mold
growth can cause cosmetic
damage that can never be re-

eco-friendly approach toward
home improvement projects.
Whereas homeowners once
worried most about their bot-
tom lines without regard for the
environment, nowadays a pro-
jects carbon footprint is high
on many a homeowners prior-
ity list. Whats more, eco-
friendly additions or adjust-
ments to a home might make
homeowners eligible for tax
breaks, and such projects often
make a home more appealing
to prospective buyers. Some of
the more common ways to
make a home more eco-friend-
ly includes:
Replace vinyl flooring with
natural linoleum or recycled
rubber floors.

future mold growth and pre-
vent further cosmetic damage

Scrub and dry moldy sur-
faces. When addressing moldy

cleaning. In such cases, its
best to simply discard the
items and have them re-
placed.
Do not mask the mold prob-
lem. Painting or caulking over
mold wont work. When ap-
plied to moldy surfaces, paint
typically cracks. Instead of
wasting paint and time, scrub
and dry the surfaces, making
sure the entire mold is gone,
and then paint or caulk.
Leave big jobs to the pros.
Smaller mold growths can be
addressed by the average
homeowner. However, when
mold growth is especially
large or mold has grown on
valuable items, including
heirlooms, its best to hire a
professional. When doing so,
try to find one a friend or
neighbor can recommend, as
not all mold-removal special-
ists are created equal. If its
hard to find a recommenda-
tion, look for a specialist who
is affiliated with a professional
organization. Such organiza-
tions typically insist their
members have a certain level
of experience and training
before they can become
members.

Chicken Breast Sorrento
2 whole chicken breasts,
skinned
1 cup water
11/2 cups Pomi, strained
1 small onion
1 small carrot
3 tablespoons olive oil
Juice of one lemon
Salt and pepper
Lettuce for garnish
Simmer chicken breasts
in water, tightly covered, with
1/4 teaspoon salt, onion and
carrot until tender (about 1/2
hour), adding water if neces-
sary. Cool, drain, remove
bones and slice breasts. Mix
the lemon juice with olive
oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, pepper
and Pomi. Pour a small por-
tion of the sauce onto a plat-
ter, place the sliced chicken
breasts on top and pour the
remaining sauce over the
chicken. Garnish with let-
tuce.

The Golden Age Circle of
Wayne, NJ, Inc. (GACW) is an
active non-profit senior group
that meets every Thursday at
the PAL Building, PAL Drive,
Wayne, NJ beginning at 1:00
P.M. Coffee is served after each
regular meeting and members
enjoy an afternoon of fellow-
ship. Day trips and overnight
trips are scheduled throughout
the year, certain meetings host
special speakers, and bingo is
played for only GACW mem-
bers one Thursday during each
month. Applications for join-
ing this active group sponsored
by the Wayne Department of
Parks and Recreation can be ob-
tained by contacting Catherine
Purdy, assistant recording secre-
tary, 973-633-9941, or come to
one of the meetings as a guest to
check us out. Yearly dues are
$7.00. Qualifications are you
must be a Wayne resident at
least 50 years of age or you must
be sponsored by a Wayne resi-
dent member.
The Morning Minyan, a group
of caring people dedicated to
observing the tradition of daily
prayer, meets at 7:30 a.m. in the
Santuary of Temple Beth Tik-
vah, 950 Preakness Avenue,
Wayne, New Jersey. A light
breakfast follows the 15 to 20
minutes prayer service. All are
welcome!
The Pines Lake Womans
Club is an active area womans
club that is open to all women
from the Wayne area who are at
least 18 years old. We meet
monthly on the second
Wednesday of the month at the
Pines Lake Elementary School
in the cafeteria at 7:30 p.m. Vis-
itors are welcome. The club of-
fers fun, friendship and service.

Mothers with infants and young
toddlers have always been chal-
lenged to find a way to get back
in shape while focusing on the
demands of new motherhood.
This class lets mom keep baby
within arms reach so there is no

sitter or making the time away
from baby to workout. The
StrollFit program is developed
with the needs of both mom
and baby in mind. Each 60-
minute class consists of cardio-
vascular, strength and flexibility
training for a total body work-
out. The classes also provide a
great environment for moms to
connect with one another and
develop support systems for
achieving fitness goals. Not to
mention bonding with baby!
