Course Name: Power System II
1. The system shown in the Fig.1 is initially on no load with generators operating at
their rated voltage with their emf’s in phase. The rating of the generators and the
transformers and their respective percent reactances are marked on the diagram. All
resistances are neglected. The line impedance is j160 Ω. A three-phase balanced fault
occurs at the receiving end of the transmission line. Determine the short circuit current
and the short-circuit MVA.

2. A synchronous generator rated 20 MVA, 13.8 kV has X1= 0.25 pu, X2 = 0.35 pu and Xo= 0.1
pu. The neutral of the generator is grounded through a 0.5 Ω reactance. Determine the fault
current when a line to ground solid fault occurs at phase ‘a’ of the generator terminal. The
generator is operating at no load and at 5% below the rated voltage.
3. Determine the kinetic energy stored by a 250-MVA, 60-Hz, two-pole synchronous generator
with an inertia constant H of 5.4 MJ/MVA. Assume the machine is running steadily at
synchronous speed with a shaft input of 331,100 hp. The electrical power developed
suddenly changes from its normal value to a value of 200 MW. Determine the acceleration
or deceleration of the rotor. If the acceleration computed for the generator is constant for a
period of 9 cycles, determine the change in the power angle in that period and the rpm at the
end of 9 cycles.
4. The ratings of all the components of a power system are shown in Fig 2. Assume the positive
and negative sequence reactances are equal for the generator and motors. Both
transformers are having same positive, negative and zero sequence reactance. Determine
fault current and the fault current contributions by the generator and the motors for an L-L
solid fault at point P. The pre-fault voltage at point P is 120 kV.

5. A 50 Hz 4-pole turbo-generator rated 100 MVA, 11 kV has an inertia constant of 8.0
MJ/MVA. Calculate:
i) The stored energy in the rotor at synchronous speed.
ii) If the mechanical input is suddenly raised to 80 MW for an electrical load of 50 MW,
find the rotor acceleration. Neglect mechanical and electrical losses.
iii) If the acceleration calculated in part (ii) is maintained for 10 cycles, find the change
in torque angle and rotor speed in rpm at the end of this period.
