1. Water at a temperature of 𝑇∞ = 25°𝐶 flows over one of the surfaces of a steel wall (AISI 1010)
whose temperature is 𝑇𝑠,1 = 40°𝐶. The wall is 0.35 m thick, and its other surface temperature is
𝑇𝑠,2 = 100°𝐶. For steady state conditions what is the convection coefficient associated with the
water flow and what is the temperature gradient in the wall and in the water that is in contact with
the wall?
2. During a cold winter day, wind at 55 km/h is blowing parallel to a 4-m-high and 10-m-long wall of a
house. If the air outside is at 5°C and the surface temperature of the wall is 12°C, determine the
rate of heat loss from that wall by convection. What would your answer be if the wind velocity was

doubled?
3. Consider atmospheric air at 25°C and a velocity of 25 m/s flowing over both surfaces of a 1-m-
long flat plate that is maintained at 125°C. Determine the rate of heat transfer per unit width from
the plate for values of the critical Reynolds number corresponding to 𝑅𝑒𝑥,𝑐 = 105 .

4. The top surface of the passenger car of a train moving at a velocity of 70 km/h is 2.8 m wide and 8
m long. The top surface is absorbing solar radiation at a rate of 200 𝑊/𝑚2 , and the temperature
of the ambient air is 30°C. Assuming the roof of the car to be perfectly insulated and the radiation
heat exchange with the surroundings to be small relative to convection, determine the equilibrium
temperature of the top surface of the car.

5. What is the pressure drop in an 18 m length of smooth 1.0 cm ID tubing when 250C benzene flows
at an average velocity of 0.12m/s?
6. Engine oil at 100°C and a velocity of 0.1 m/s flows over both surfaces of a 1-m-long flat plate
maintained at 20°C. Determine the velocity and thermal boundary layer thicknesses at the trailing
edge, the local heat flux at the trailing edge and find the total drag force and heat transfer per unit
width of the plate
7. For heating water from 200 𝐶 𝑡𝑜 600 𝐶 an electrically heated tube resulting in a constant heat flux
of 10𝑘𝑊/𝑚2 is proposed. The mass flow rate is to be such that 𝑅𝑒𝐷 = 2000, and
consequently the flow must remain laminar. The tube inside diameter is 25 mm. The flow is fully
developed (velocity profile). Determine (a) the length of tube required and (b) if this proposed
heating system is feasible with regard to wall temperature.
8. Air at 1.0 atmosphere pressure and 770 𝐶 enters a 5.0 mm i.d. tube with a bulk average velocity of
2.5 m/s. The velocity profile is developed and the thermal profile is "developing." The tube length is
1.0m, and a constant (uniform) heat flux is imposed by the tube surface on the air over the entire
length. An exit air bulk average temperature, 𝑇𝑏,𝑜 , = 127"𝐶, is required. Determine (a) the exit h
value, hL,(b)the uniform q,;, and (c) the exit tube surface temperature.
