Answer ONE question from EACH UNIT
All questions carry equal Marks.
UNIT-III CO KL M
1. a Explain Skin Effect and Proximity Effect. CO3 2 3M
b A 3phase, 50 Hz, 132 kV overhead line has conductors placed in a horizontal plane 4 m CO2 3 7M
apart. Conductor diameter is 2 cm. If the line length is 100 km, calculate the charging
current per phase assuming complete transposition. ε 0=8·854 ×10−12 F/m.

2. a Derive an expression for the Capacitance of a three phase line having unsymmetrical spacing. CO2 3 5M
b A 3-phase overhead transmission line has its conductors arranged at the corners of an equilateral CO2 3 5M
triangle of 2 m side. Calculate the capacitance of each line conductor per km. Given that
diameter of each conductor is 1·25 cm.
UNIT-IV
3. a Evaluate the generalized circuit constants for short transmission line CO3 5 5M
b A 3phase, 50Hz, 150 km line has a resistance, inductive reactance and capacitive shunt CO3 3 5M
admittance of 0·1 Ω, 0·5 Ω and 3 ×10−6 S per km per phase. If the line delivers 50 MW at 110
kV and 0·8 p.f .lagging. Calculate the sending end voltage and current. Assume a nominal π
circuit for the line.

4. a Using rigorous method, Derive expressions for sending end voltage and current for a Long CO3 3 5M
transmission line.
b A 3-φ transmission line 200 km long has the following constants : Resistance/phase/km = 0·16 CO3 3 5M
Ω Reactance/phase/km = 0·25 Ω Shunt admittance/phase/km = 1·5 × 10−6 S.
Calculate by rigorous method the sending end voltage and current when the line is delivering a
load of 20 MW at 0·8 p.f. lagging. The receiving end voltage is kept constant at 110 kV.

two supports of the same height.

crossing. The horizontal distance between the towers is 500 m. If the tension in the conductor is
1600 kg, Calculate the minimum clearance of the conductor and water and clearance mid-way
between the supports. Weight of conductor is 1·5 kg/m. Bases of the towers can be considered
to be at water level.

6 a The self capacitance of each unit in a string of three suspension insulators is C. The shunting CO3 3 5M
capacitance of the connecting metal work of each insulator to earth is 0·15 C while for line it is
0·1 C. Calculate (i) the voltage across each insulator as a percentage of the line voltage to earth
and (ii) string efficiency.
