Feel Aklan, Feel Alive

Aklan is situated in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It has 17


Municipalities comprising 327 Barangays and the town Kalibo is the capital
of the province.

Regarded as the country’s oldest province, the written history of Aklan takes
us back to the middle of the 13th century when ten Bornean datus, together
with their families, fled the oppressive rule of the Bornean king Sultan
Makatunaw. The account paved the way for Aklan’s religiosity to the Kalibo
Sto. Niño Ati-atihan Festival, declared as “The Mother of all Philippine
Festivals.”

Its significant heritage, albeit century-old past, the birth of the province of
Aklan, April 25, 1956, thru Republic Act 1414, separating Aklan from the
province Capiz, authored by Congressman Godofredo P. Ramos.

Proud of famous Boracay Island as recognized globally being one of the best
beaches for its sugary-fine-white sand, sapphire waters, amazing coral reefs,
and exceptional sea shells.

Aklan has become the prime producer of piña cloth in the country and used
by international designers for their collections as well. This unique textile
deemed as “The Queen of Philippine Fabrics.”

A mountainous province with over one-third of its land area sloping at 30


percent on the average. It is one of the few provinces in the country to
maintain a total of 709 hectares of virgin forest. And has a total land area of
1,817 sq. kms.

Based from 2020 Census of Population and Housing by the Philippine


Statistics Authority, as of May 1, 2020, Aklan has 615,475 population.

Aklan’s population accounted for about 8 percent in Western Visayas, which


is 7,954,723. The province’s population increased by 40,652 from 574,823
in 2015, which translates to an annual population growth rate (PGR) of 1.45
percent, up from 1.35 percent PGR during the period 2010 to 2015.

The Aklan Provincial Government boasts that beyond sand, sound and fiber,
the province has an active economy, finding its richness of agriculture and
marine resources as income-generating means. Aklan is packed with
entrepreneurial residents who served as channels from which have various
industries have spawned. This has in turn given the government inspiration
to be in quest of innovative and ground-breaking avenues for its progress
thriving towards sustainable development.

Enabling Mechanism – Governance and Management

The Schools Division of Aklan explores appropriate strategic directions in


Enabling Mechanism – Governance and Management embedded in the
Division Education Development Plan (DEDP) for 2022-2028.

It recognizes significant deal of work to guide the following: 1) improved SBM


level of practice; 2) very satisfactory or higher rating in the Office
Performance Commitment and Review Form (OPCRF); 3) an ideal ratio in
classroom, teachers, textbooks, seat, Science and Math equipment, and ICT
package/e-classroom; 4) ideal proportion in functional library, connection to
electricity, and connection to internet functional library; 5) ideal
interquartile ratio (IQR) on teacher deployment; 6) very satisfactory rating in
the Client Satisfaction Survey from the respective stakeholders (internal &
external) across governance; 7) financial contribution from local and
international partners; and 8) functional School Government Council (SGC).

Though the post COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a number of


challenges, the threat can be taken as an opportunity to strengthen
programs and projects such as PAGKILAEA, MoRe (Mobile Resources), ONLI
– ONe Library, CATCHED (Capacitating Teacher’s Challenges and
Educational Development), CARE (Collaborative Action in Remediation and
Evaluation), and BINHI: Gulayan sa Tahanan Challenges.

This strategic development plan is a strong proponent of ensuring equitable


access to learning opportunities for all children. We will continue to strive
for the best educational and life course outcomes in the SDO Aklan.
