Course Outline (EE472) - 2021

This 3-credit course introduces electromagnetic wave propagation, transmission lines, waveguides, and antennas. It will derive the electromagnetic wave equation from Maxwell's equations and examine wave propagation in different media, including reflection, refraction, and total internal reflection. Transmission line theory, Smith charts, waveguide modes, and antenna radiation characteristics will also be covered. The course is evaluated at Bloom's level C4 and assessed through quizzes, assignments, exams, and a project. Dr. Maab is the instructor and office hours are on Tuesdays from 12:30-1:30pm.

Course Introduction
This course introduces the characteristics of electromagnetic wave propagation and its behavior in unbounded and bounded different
types of electromagnetic mediums. The derivation of electromagnetic wave equation using Maxwell’s equations for time varying fields.
It represents the electromagnetic wave propagation reflection and refraction at normal and oblique angle of incidence at a planar
interface between two dissimilar mediums. It also includes the total reflection from multiple dielectric interfaces at normal and oblique
angle of incidence. The concept of transmission line theory and its parameters, smith chart and its application are introduced. It also
covers waveguide theory and TM & TE modes. In addition, the course includes Antenna radiation characteristics, antenna types such
as dipole, loop, and antenna array.
