Introduction to Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Virtual reality (VR)and augmented reality (AR)hold

tremendous promise for the future of gaming, marketing,
e-commerce and education, and other sectors. People
recognize both technologies for their improved
experiences that combine virtual and real-world with
enhanced,3-D images. Although the two can be easily
confused, there are some fundamental differences. So,
what is augmented reality and virtual reality?
What is virtual reality? Definition
Virtual reality is a simulated 3D environment that enables users to explore
and interact with a virtual surrounding in a way that approximates reality, as it
is perceived through the users' senses. The environment is created
with computer hardware and software, although users might also need to
wear devices such as helmets or goggles to interact with the environment.
The more deeply users can immerse themselves in a VR environment -- and
block out their physical surroundings -- the more they are able to suspend
their belief and accept it as real, even if it is fantastical in nature.

What are the main types of virtual reality?

The VR industry still has far to go before realizing its vision of a totally immersive environment that

enables users to engage multiple sensations in a way that approximates reality. However, the technology

has come a long way in providing realistic sensory engagement and shows promise for business use in a

number of industries. VR systems can vary significantly from one to the next, depending on their purpose

and the technology used, although they generally fall into one of the following three categories:

Non-immersive.  This type of VR typically refers to a 3D simulated environment that's accessed through a

computer screen. The environment might also generate sound, depending on the program. The user has

some control over the virtual environment using a keyboard, mouse or other device, but the environment

does not directly interact with the user. A video game is a good example of non-immersive VR, as is a

website that enables a user to design a room's decor.

Semi-immersive. This type of VR offers a partial virtual experience that's accessed through a computer

screen or some type of glasses or  headset. It focuses primarily on the visual 3D aspect of virtual reality

and does not incorporate physical movement in the way that full immersion does. A common example of

semi-immersive VR is the flight simulator, which is used by airlines and militaries to train their pilots.

Fully immersive. This type of VR delivers the greatest level of virtual reality, completely immersing the

user in the simulated 3D world. It incorporates sight, sound and, in some cases, touch. There have even

been some experiments with the addition of smell. Users wear special equipment such as helmets,

goggles or  gloves and are able to fully interact with the environment. The environment might also

incorporate such equipment as  treadmills or stationary bicycles to provide users with the experience of

moving through the 3D space. Fully immersive VR technology is a field still in its infancy, but it has made

important inroads into the  gaming industry and to some extent the healthcare  industry, and it's

generating a great deal of interest in others.

types of VR devices
At the moment, there are two major types of headsets. Both have their pros and
cons, which you'll want to consider if you're looking to purchase one.
The first type has a  screen built in to the headset. These devices connect to a
computer and require a pretty powerful system to operate smoothly. They have
great graphics and perform well, but they're also  pretty expensive. A few
popular examples of these include the  Oculus Rift, the  Vive, and
the  PlayStation VR, which connects to the PlayStation 4 game console.

Some of these devices come with  handheld controllers  that track your hands'
movements as well, providing for a more interactive experience.

The other type of headset  houses your phone and uses its screen as the display.
These don't require a computer and run completely off of apps on your
smartphone. The graphics and performance levels on these headsets aren't
quite as good as those with a built-in screen, but they do tend to be  much
cheaper. Some popular examples include  Google Cardboard  and the  Gear
VR.

Augmented reality allows you to  see the world around you with digital images
layered on top of it. There are currently a couple of AR headsets available,
including the  Microsoft HoloLens  and the  Magic Leap. However, they are
currently more expensive than VR headsets, and are marketed primarily to
businesses.
Augmented reality can also be used on devices
like  smartphones  and  laptops  without the use of a headset. There are a
variety of apps that use AR, including some that allow you to  translate text
using your camera,  identify stars  in the sky, and even  see how your garden
would look with different plants. You may have even previously used AR
without realizing it, while playing a game like  Pokémon Go  or using  filters on
Snapchat.

Watch the following video to see how augmented reality could be applied in
the near future.

Both VR and AR technologies are growing at a pretty rapid pace. Many experts
predict that they'll continue to become more and more popular in the near
future. As technology becomes more advanced, it'll be exciting to see how
they'll be applied to both business and everyday life!
What are Some of the Positive
Aspects of Virtual Reality?
Virtual reality gives people the chance to travel around the world, and even outer space,
without having to leave the comfort of their homes. This capability is already taken
advantage of by schools worldwide to enrich lesson plans.

It also allows people to experience the world in ways they never could before. You can
stand on top of a waterfall, fly with the birds, and visit Paris for a couple of hours. It
has opened a world of endless possibilities, opportunities, and excitement.

Another cool aspect of virtual reality is the ability to get rewards without any risk. People
can ride rollercoasters, bungee jump, scuba dive, or even go skydiving without the risks
associated with these activities. Still, the user gets the adrenaline rush that they often seek
out through these types of activities. The benefits of it do not stop at just the superficial
stuff, either.

What are Some of the Negative

Aspects?
Even with all the positives that come with virtual reality, there are still some negatives to
consider. One of them is the fact that virtual reality can result in less human contact. Since
virtual reality allows people to experience things in brand new ways, it can become
addictive. If people start exploring this new virtual world, they can get sucked in for long
periods of time and end up neglecting their real lives, the real world, and the people in it.

Virtual reality can also be somewhat deceptive. VR allows people to be whoever they want
to be. Though this can be viewed as a good thing, it could be taken advantage of for
deceptive purposes. For example, people can create avatars to
persuade others to purchase products or services. They can do this by creating a relatable
avatar with common interests and befriending others for their personal gain.

It can also result in some negative physical side-effects. As we mentioned before, virtual
reality allows you to do fun, risky things while still being safe, which is a huge perk! On the
downside, many users have reported nausea due to VR headsets playing tricks
on their senses. Additionally, people have reported eyestrain due to the large number of
visual stimuli you often experience in virtual reality.

Motion sickness is a potential hazard when it comes to virtual reality. The mismatch
between body movements and what is seen in a virtual world can cause dizziness and
eyestrain for some people. This results in eye damage being a major concern for potential
users. The widespread usage of computers had resulted in Computer Vision Syndrome.

They can also be quite heavy and uncomfortable. Extended use of VR goggles and devices
can result in headaches and neck pain. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the weight
with lighter, durable materials but this results in the price of VR devices increasing
significantly. For this reason, there tends to be a higher affinity for augmented reality since it
does not typically include heavier goggles and devices the way that VR does.

Augmented reality puts computer-generated objects into your real environment, so it is not
entirely virtual in the way that VR is. One popular example of AR is the Pokémon Go game
people often play on their smartphones. With virtual reality, you cannot see anything around
you in the real world which can be potentially dangerous. This can be a huge drawback
since the lack of vision can result in some harmful accidents.
