CAMPUS JOURNALISM

Define Campus Journalism in your own point of view.

Campus Journalism is an activity by an educational institution in collecting, writing and editing news; in writing
editorials, columns, features, and literary articles; in taking pictures and cartooning and published within the
institution only. Campus journalism is not just an activity by an educational institution but it also provides students a
voice. Student journalists can act as the messengers of the student body. They can talk about issues, policies, and
events that are essential to both the student and the school administration. Also, campus journalism helps students to
practice their freedom of expression.

Why do Campus Journalist used to be responsible in their writing?

Campus Journalist used to be responsible in their writing because they have code of ethics to follow. It is a guide
that encourages all who engage in journalism to take responsibility for the information they provide, regardless of
medium. Aside from that, they are the voice of their fellow students and they bring great influence to their readers so
they must be responsible enough in writing. They must collect, verify and analyze thoroughly the informational
from credible sources. Also, they should write only what they holds in heart to be true and not based on their own
opinion.

Explain the relevance of the saying “Pen is mightier than sword” in Campus Journalism.

The “pen is mightier than sword” is a well-known saying about the power of writing. It signifies that influencing
people through thoughts and ideas are more effective than forces or fighting. Many people feel powerful when they
use pens. Campus journalists for instance, can influence students with their writings. They have the ability to touch
hearts and influence minds, a power that no swords can possessed.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A CAMPUS WRITER:

 Collecting, verifying and analyzing thoroughly newsworthy information.

The first step in writing a story involves collecting information about your topic. In order to do so, you need
people who witnessed the event or have deep knowledge on said topic. After collecting information you need to
verify it because verification is important for journalists as it helps build readers trust. So journalists should always
check every detail used in his/her story, including researching all information shared with him/her by his/her
sources. Lastly, you need to analyze thoroughly newsworthy information which is considered interesting and
important enough to be published.

 Assembling findings into a stable story.

Arrange the story in a manner that people will understand your story. In other words, you must put together all the
information you gathered in a sensible manner.

 Writing and delivering news stories with the reader’s perspective in mind.

In writing and delivering news stories, we should make sure that readers will fully understand what we are trying to
convey because reader’s had their own perspective in mind.

 Publish or broadcast news stories.


Of course campus writers are the one who will publish or broadcast news stories. They inform their fellow students
about current events, concerns, or ideas.

 Receive assignments or investigate news leads/tips.

As a journalist, you need to investigate news leads/tips to determine whether what you heard or read is true.
Investigating can help you determine the legitimacy of the information they tipped you.

 Abide by journalism’s ethics and codes.

Journalism’s ethics and codes encourages all who engage in journalism to take responsibility for the information
they provide. It is a guide that journalists should follow.

 Contact, interview and research sources.

It is the campus writer responsibility to contact the person who have a deep knowledge about his/her topic and to
conduct his/her interview. Also, as a writer who hope to influence his/her readers need to know what research
sources are available, where to find them, and how to use them.

 Maintain notes and audio recordings.

Journalists should seek to be fair and truthful in reporting what their sources tell them.
