Tutorial 1 – Week 2
Kinematics
1. A person jogs eight complete laps around a quarter-mile track in a total time of 12.5 min.
Calculate:
a) The average speed (Answer: 4.3 m/s)
b) The average velocity in m/s (Answer: 0 m/s)
2. Two locomotives approach each other on parallel tracks. Each has a speed of 95 km/h with
respect to the ground. If they are initially 8.5 km apart, how long will it be before they reach
each other? (Answer: 2.7 min)
3. A car travelling 88 km/h is 110 m behind a truck travelling 75 km/h. How long
will it take the car to reach the truck? (Answer: 3.0×101 s)
4. A sports car moving at a constant speed travels 110 m in 5.0 s. If it then brakes
and comes to a stop in 4.0 s, what is its acceleration in m/s2? Express the answer
in terms of “g’s” where 1.00 g = 9.80 m/ss. (Answer: - 0.56 g’s)
5. In coming to a stop, a car leaves skid marks 92 m long on the highway. Assuming
a deceleration of 7.00 m/s2, estimate the speed of the car just before braking.
(Answer: 36 m/s)
6. A baseball is hit nearly straight up into the air with a speed of 22 m/s.
a) How high does it go? (Answer: 25 m)
b) How long is it in the air? (Answer: 4.5 s)
9. Three vectors are shown in the figure below. Their magnitudes are given in
arbitrary units. Determine the sum of the three vectors. Give the resultant in terms
of
a) components, (Answer: x = 24, y = 11.6)
b) magnitude and angle with the x axis. (Answer: 26.7, 𝜽 = 𝟐𝟓. 𝟖°)
10. A diver running 1.8 m/s dives out horizontally from the edge of a vertical cliff
and 3.0 s later reaches the water below. How high was the cliff, and how far from
its base did the diver hit the water? (Answer: height = 44 m , distance = 5.4 m)
11. A fire hose held near the ground shoots water at a speed of 6.8 m/s. At what
angle(s) should the nozzle point in order that the water land 2.0 m away? Why are
there two different angles? Sketch the two trajectories. (Answer: 13° , 77°)
12. A projectile is fired with an initial speed of 65.2 m/s at an angle of 34.5° above
the horizontal on a long flat firing range. Determine
a) the maximum height reached by the projectile (Answer: 69.6 m)
b) the total time in the air (Answer: t = 7.54 s)
c) the total horizontal distance covered (that is, the range) (Answer: 405 m)
d) the velocity of the projectile 1.50 s after firing. (Answer: 58.1 m/s)
13. A shot-putter throws the shot with an initial speed of 15.5 m/s at a 34.0° angle to
the horizontal. Calculate the horizontal distance travelled by the shot if it leaves
the athlete’s hand at a height of 2.20 m above the ground. (Answer: 25.6 m)
