Solns of 5 Points

The document describes a problem involving two towers of equal height with their bases joined by a line AC. The angle of elevation of the nearer tower is given as 60° at a point between the towers. The angles of elevation of the tops of the towers are then given as 45° and 30° respectively at a point 24m from the original point in a direction perpendicular to AC. The problem is to find the height (h) of the towers and their distance apart (x).

Two towers AB and CD are of equal height.

At a point between them in the line AC joining

their bases, the angle of elevation of the nearer tower was observed to be 60o. Then at 24
m from the same point in a direction perpendicular to AC, the angle of elevation of the top
of the towers are 45o for the nearer tower and 30o for the other. Find the height of the
towers (h) and their distance apart (x).
Find the eccentricity of the curve 9x2 - 4y2 - 36x + 8y = 4.
9x^2 - 4y^2 - 36x + 8y = 4
complete the square
9(x^2-4x+4)-4(y^2-2y+1)=4+36-4=36
9(x-2)^2-4(y-1)^2=36
divide by 36
9(x-2)^2/4-(y-1)^2/9=1

This is an equation of a hyperbola with horizontal transverse axis of the standard form:
(x-h)^2/a^2-(y-k)^2/b^2=1
For given equation:
a^2=4
a=√4=2
b^2=9
c^2=a^2+b^2=4+9=13
c=√13
Eccentricity,e=c/a=√13/2≈1.80

The time required for two examinees to solve the same problem differ by two
minutes. Together they can solve 32 problems in one hour. How long will it take
for the slower problem solver to solve the problem?
First examinee needs x minutes. Rate is 1/x problems per minute.
Second examinee needs x+2 minutes. Rate is 1/(x+2) problems per minute.

Working together, their rate is 1/x + 1/(x+2) = (2x+2)/[x(x+2)]

So (2x+2) / [x(x+2)] * 60 = 32 (Sixty minutes in one hour; in that time they do 32 questions) This, after a
bit of rearranging, turns out to be the equation 4x^2 -7x-15 = 0.

Solving that equation should give you x = 3 minutes. The examinees can finish problems in 3 minutes and
5 minutes, respectively.

A 47.2-kg child is standing on the outer edge of a merry-go-round that has moment of inertia 543 kg • m2
and radius 2.40 m. The entire system is initially rotating at 0.180 rev/s. Find the angular velocity if the
child moves to a final position 1.10 m from the center of the merry-go-round.

Conserve angular momentum:

(543kg·m² + 47.2kg * (2.40m)²) * 0.180rev/s = (543kg·m² + 47.2kg * (1.10m)²) * ω
ω = 0.244 rev/s
