1.8 Locational issues- location of an industry is the main factor, which directly concerns
with the success and failure of any company. It plays a vital role in the development of any

15
company. Every entrepreneur of a business unit must give full consideration to the suitable
location of his business enterprise because of location is a crucial factor for profit
maximization and growth of the firm. An entrepreneur has to choose such type of location,
which minimizes the lost of production as well as distribution to a considerable extent.
Balaji Wafers Pvt Ltd. Is situated at Vajdi, Kalawad Road in Rajkot City of Gujarat. The old
factory is situated in Aji GIDC area. It is covered in the total area of 25000 to 30000 sq.
metres. Due to the location of company edging many advantages. The major factors affecting
Balaji Wafers Pvt Ltd. Are as follows:
1. Availability of raw materials- “Balaji Wafers” one of the topmost potato wafers producer
in Gujarat. They are producing more than 20 items from these, they require raw materials in
surplus and large quantity. Some of the raw materials used by them are banana, chana dal,
mung dal, besan powder, edible oil and many more. So the company gets all these raw
materials easily
2. Cheap labour- labour force is the main and essential part of production process, if the
labour force is efficient and effective then the production would be better and properly as per
planned and ultimately leads to increasing capacity and profit. As the company is situated at a
rural area, so they get cheap, skilled and efficient labour easily, the company has 75% of
women labour
3. Quick Transportation- as the area is covered by the other industries which are situated on
highways that is far from city and because of that there is no problem of transportation. The
company also has its own transportation named Kataria Transportation, which is owned by
them for moving products and all.
4. Electric Supply-Due to many industries situated there the government is ready to provide
24 hours electric power supply which is beneficial for company that it can carry on their
activities and production without any hurdles and problems of power.
5. Nearness to market- the vital of any industries is the market, as ultimately they are
producing to sell in the market. So, the unit must be located at the point where company can
easily supply their production to the distributors, markets, sales agents and others. In this case
Balaji Wafers has a advantage due to their location and their 90% market is only in the
Gujarat state.

6. Suitable Climate- As Rajkot is situated in the middle of Gujarat. The Saurashtra which is
having best climate around the whole year and also favorable to the products produced by the
company. Due to these above quoted advantages of the company is able to do production at a
very reasonable cost and this is one of the reason for the good demand of the products

16
1.9 Awards and Achievements- Over times, Balaji wafer’s spectacular achievements
have made a few prestigious associations and companies to bestow honour upon its
chairperson and founding members. The company was awarded as the sultan of wafers by
economic times.

17
The international magazine published an exclusive article talking about the food quality of
Balaji Wafers, called chip off the old block.

Also, the Balaji group is a member of the snacks food association of India for a long time
now.

Evidently, Chandu bhai’s career is an inspirational one. Born in a poor family, struggling
since birth, starting a small-scale business to turning it into a multi- million dollar company is
a spectacular achievement. Ever since its establishment, the Balaji group too has come a long
way. Serving quality food to people, it has created a good name and reputation among
consumers. Initially, a lot of people used to mock at Chandu bhai’s wafer venture but now
they die to know its secret of success. What we forget is that success depends on experience.
With time, people gain knowledge, expertise, tactics, and learn from their failures. If you are
dedicated enough, success would come to you someday for sure.

Madison Media won the media duties worth Rs. 20 Crore of the well-known snacks
brand, Balaji Wafers. The company's media account was put up for a multi-agency pitch for
the first time ever.

18
PRODUCTION

2.1 Product classification- The products of Balaji Wafers Pvt Ltd., are classified into
three categories, Namkeen, Wafers and Western snacks. The Balaji Wafer had a 51+ product
range and 93+ SKUs (stock keeping units). The company had a massive growth in the chips
sector in the 2007-16 decade, Also they aimed to grab a similar market in the frozen food
and fries sector by launching new line of products under the Iscon-Balaji food Brands.
The most demanding and grossing products of Balaji Wafers are the Namkeens and Potato
chips as per the data.
The rest line of products are liked by a particular group pf people such as for ex- the western
snacks and chips are mostly liked by the children’s and kids and they are fond of eating it.and
the namkeen are mostly liked by the mid age and above 60 as it includes most of farsans
which the most Gujaratis are fond and consumes most, so each category classified has
differences in demand of each

2.2 Production Process- When it comes to cleaning in India, not many industries appear
to follow clean & green practices; the gloom and doom in maintaining profitability simply
doesn’t let the management concentrate on cleaning. Among the few companies that have
swayed from the Inertie du dirtiness to the aisle of ‘clean’ practices, is Balaji Wafers. Also
known as the ‘Sultan of Wafers’, Balaji Wafers has won accolades across the globe for
quality maintenance of its manufacturing facility.
Balaji Wafers is one of the largest potato chips producing company in India, with a high
market share especially in Gujarat.
In the initial stage, Balaji Group had set up their plant at Aji Vasad (Industrial Zone, Rajkot)
with their new concept of making the potato chips. The main benefit they got is the
readymade infrastructure availability due to which their cost is reduced to larger extent. They
have operated over there around 20 to 22 years. By the overwhelming retail success, they
were inspired to set a semi automatic plant. Instead of preparing wafers by the traditional
frying method this semi automatic plant boosted the quality, taste and more sales also. The
fame of taste reached to the whole Gujarat hence it was time to take over the whole Gujarat
so the biggest automatic plant of Gujarat came into the picture.
Balaji Wafers Process Flow Chart:
 Raw-material
 Grading
 Destoner
 Peeler
 Inspection belt
 Washing wiper

19
 Slicer
 Starch remove
 Fry
 Oil filter
 Sampling process
 Sorting
 Moisture measurement

 Packing process
 Testing
 Cartoon packing
 Cross checking

Raw-material- In Balaji wafers section, potatoes use as basic raw-material for making chips
or wafers, potatoes comes from cold-storage and farm directly through truck and heavy
vehicles. In the initial processing phase, the potatoes flow from storage tanks into a large
hopper that slowly feeds them into a destoner. Worker put this potatoes bags (50kg/bag) in
stand and potatoes go ahead through conveyer belt for grading process.
Grading Process - In grading process, generally potatoes size check, if potatoes size is
smaller than requirement is remove from the second side of the machine, other potatoes go
for dispone process.
Destoner Process - In destoner process, potatoes have some clay in their surface so in
destoner process potatoes put into large water bucket for removing clay and other particle of
mote, all stones, wood, or any that may have been dug when harvesting the potatoes. The
rejected pieces of potato are then discarded.
Peeler - For peel of potatoes design one rod called peeler, in peeler have one large steel rod
and their surface put calamine types material so it can remove peel of the potatoes. This
peeler time span based on potatoes quality, in one machine eight peeler fitted so potatoes
comes from the upper side of the machine then continuous rotating of the peeler potatoes peel
remove before it reaching to the other side of the machine.
Inspection belt - After removing peel of the potatoes, in this belt useless or baleful potatoes
removes to the other side.
Washing wiper - Useful potatoes go into washing wiper in washing wiper potatoes washed
by the water and then go into slicer.
Slicer - Reappeared from washing wiper go into slicer through conveyer belt for cutting slide
or wafers, slicer have three big circle shape cutting machine with six blade in one circle so
potatoes rotate and cut by the blade. After making potatoes slice all are not same size slice so
small slice remove by automatically and useful slice for frying process.
Starch remove- In potatoes have starch so uncouple starch when cut into slice so this starch
collect from below side of the machine or conveyer belt and small particle of potatoes also
unloose by vibrating conveyer belt. After removing bad particle of the potatoes slices we also
remove water part present in potatoes slices for this process we pass slices into one machine

20
which have upper side air blow types and below air twitch or vacuum types machine. So from
the upper side blow the air into wafers slices and below side water twitch by the vacuum
machine. After removing peel of potatoes and small particle of waste is used for cattle food
and bio-sake and remove starch is used for as a raw material making another product.
Fry- Now secondary part of the process come, after doing all above process, slices are ready
to fry and eligible for making wafers. For frying process have large pam oil tank in the pam
oil tank pam oil temperature around 160 to 180 ºC with 4000L. This pam oil heat through the
boiler indirectly and pam oil store into one tank and around this tank heat oil feel another tank
for pam oil heated by the outer surface of the tank.
Oil filter - After frying the potatoes slices pam oil have some small particle of the slices and
some debris material present so it can removing by the filter process. After doing all this
process for oil filter remove oil from the wafers also so for this we can pass from the large
conveyer belt and defecate by the automatically.
Sampling process & Sorting- In wafers frying process few (very less) wafers are fried very
highly or some black dot kind wafers so it can remove by the sampling process. Sampling
process is done by the LabVIEW in this process when wafers come through conveyer belt
take sample from camera and apply sampling algorithm to the sample and defective pieces
are show in the screen, and this process give command to the air blow line which is slightly
away from the sampling process and when defective pieces come blow the air and it can
remove by the below the machine. This process is much require in the food industry, using
this sampling process defective pieces automatically detect by the camera and also shown in
screen and remove automatically easily.
Moisture measurement - After removing defective pieces of the wafers moisture
measurement sensor use for measuring moisture present in the wafers. Moisture measurement
are used to measure the percentage of water in a given substance, this information can be
used to determine if the material is ready for use, unexpectedly wet or dry,or otherwise in
need of further inspection.
Flavour drum - In flavour drum add the masala, if requirement is for tomato flavor so this
types of masala add into the drum and when potatoes wafers come via conveyer belt into
drum and rotate the drum so masala stick to the wafers surface and go for the packing process
Packing process - It is the second last process of wafers product, in this process wafers go
into drum shape machine in this machine wafers bags are prepared, we give the command for
the machine for how much gram wafers fill into the bag. Before this wafers are distributed
into 3 to 4 parts and after given command wafers are collected into below tank as per the
given command. If any machine have fault or stop due to any reason wafers go into another
way so wafers are wasted or overflow. In packing process as per the weight wafers fill into
bag and also add dry nitrogen gas for making wafers life time larger or wafers cannot
wasteful long time. Balaji Wafers Rajkot plant produce 1200 Kg wafers per hour from 4800
Kg. potatoes. Balaji Wafers Valsad plant produce 2200 Kg wafers per hour from 9000 Kg.
potatoes. Balaji Wafers Indore plant produce 1450 Kg wafers per hour from 6000 Kg.
potatoes.
Cross checking - After fill wafers into bags employer take any random sample taken from
the outlet side and check its weight and air leakage. In conveyer belt one side empty cartoon
comes and employer fill the wafers bags into cartoon and other side this cartoon goes for final
weight checking this is done by automatically. When lade cartoon comes outside if this
21
weight is less

22
than its set valve than this cartoon automatically rejected by the machine. This is done by the
pushing types arm when cartoon weight is less than set value pushing arm push the cartoon
and other qualified cartoon goes to the dispatch process.

2.3 Production Capacity - Rajkot-based Balaji Wafers Private Limited is in process of

increasing its production capacity of its plant in Rajkot.

For this, the company is setting up two new production lines which is expected to raise it
production capacity by nearly 50 percent. The company also has a plant in Valsad district in
South Gujarat.

23
“We are going to increase production capacity at Rajkot plant. Work on two new production
lines is going on for the last two months. New production lines will be functional from next
month,” said Keyur Virani, director, Balaji Wafers Private Limited.

The new production lines will manufacture wafers and other snacks. Balaji is also planning to
launch new flavours in the market in coming days.
Virani said, “The expenditure for the two new production lines would be about Rs 80-100
crore. We started investment for this project last year and the fund for this was managed from
internal accruals.”

Production capacity of the new production lines, which would be fully automatic, will be
around 5,000 kg per hour.
Currently, the production capacity of Rajkot plant is 8,000-10,000 kg per hour in which the
company produces multi-flavoured wafers, chana dal, mung dal and 25 other snacks.

The company shelved its July 2013 plans to sell 15 per cent stake to private equity funds for
future expansions and is now readying for initial public offering (IPO) to raise fund for its
future plans.

“We are preparing to come up with an IPO to raise funds for our future expansions. The
company plans to offer not more than 10 per cent equity shares of the company,” confirmed
Virani.

Balaji Wafers enjoys around 65 percent market share in western Indian snacks market and is
present in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Rajasthan and some parts of Madhya Pradesh. Its
current turnover exceeds Rs 1,200 crore and the company expects 25-30 percent growth in

2014-15

wafers producer in Gujarat. They are producing more than 20 items from these, they require
raw materials in surplus and large quantity. Some of the raw materials used by them are
banana, chana dal, mung dal, besan powder, edible oil and many more. So the company gets

2.6 Ways to Handle Industrial Waste - One of the major challenges facing the
company today is frequent power cuts. As about 8 lakh kg of potato wafers and 10 lakh kg of
snacks are processed every hour at its manufacturing unit in Rajkot, even a minute’s power
loss (before the generator kicks in) could mean massive wastage and loss. The company is a
long-standing member of the Snacks Food Association. It entered into a joint venture with
Iscon Group (a well-known real estate firm) and SP Chips Potato Pvt Ltd to manufacture
French fries and other frozen specialities under the name Iscon Balaji Foods.

Balaji Wafers is one of the few companies where women make up almost 50 per cent of the
work force. Subsidised meals are provided to all employees and the company has a reputation
for helping out when necessary. The Virani family has developed a public utility centre
square called ‘Kotecha Chowk’ in Rajkot. It is in partnership with the Rajkot Municipal
Corporation for the ‘Green City Clean City’ project.

The company has adopted several environment-friendly measures such as the establishment
of effluent treatment plants to process waste water, which is then used for irrigation or
supplied to chemical factories. The organic waste produced at the factories is used to
generate bio-fuel in bio-gas plants, while windmills at every plant generate clean energy. The
factory grounds at Rajkot have around 2,000 plants and trees.

• In 2016, the company set up a plant outside Gujarat in Madhya Pradesh for the first
time

Balaji Wafers Private Limited, a Rajkot-based company that makes wafers and packed
snacks, is now set to start its second plant outside Gujarat. In a conversation with Dainik

Apart from these, the second plant outside Gujarat is in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Now the

build a food park in Uttar Pradesh.
The company will invest Rs 600-700 crore

Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. A decision will be taken about the plant soon. The company will
invest Rs 600-700 crore in the initial phase for this food park to be built on 100 acres. Part of

production. We are moving ahead with this target that in five years, the turnover of this food
park will reach Rs 3 thousand crore.
Chief Minister will meet Yogi Adityanath
Keyur Virani said that we are trying to meet Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for this
project. Our aim is to meet them and discuss the project. However, we are quite sure about meeting him,

Planning to cover the market in North India
The company currently covers markets in North India with plants in Gujarat and Madhya

Wafers Company, there is a good demand for packaged wafers and snacks in all these
states.
No plans to sell stake
Regarding setting up a plant in UP, Kayur Virani also clarified that it is often said that the
company is ready to sell its stake. However, we do not have any such planning. Yes, earlier
the PepsiCo company had shown interest in buying Balaji’s stake, but the matter could not go
ahead. At the same time, if we talk about UP’s plant, then this investment is quite big.
However, we do not plan to sell the stake. We will manage this expenditure at our level
only.Wafers being prepared at Balaji Wafers’ plant at Rajkot.

CONCLUSION

At last, I have concluded that India is a developing country free economy. So it has an
opportunity for very domestic company to upgrade its technology and other process in order
stand in modern market. BALAJI WAFERS PVT LTD. was not started on very large basis
but due to the best efforts of the executive and director it has earned good reputation in the
sector. It earns valuable foreign exchange for India through its exports and has maintained
good relation with outsiders and employees. It has a very efficient group of employees and I
wish BALAJI WAFERS PVT LTD. A very good luck for the future.
