Diffusion - Virtual Lab

The dialysis tube models a selectively permeable cell membrane. The tube allows some substances like iodine to diffuse across it, while blocking other larger substances like starch. In the experiment, the beaker solution was hypertonic with respect to iodine compared to the tube. This caused iodine to diffuse from the higher to lower concentration, from beaker into tube. Iodine acts as an indicator by changing color when combined with starch. This allowed observers to see that iodine had diffused into the tube by the color change from clear to purple.

Diffusion - Virtual Lab

Essential Question: How do

substances move across a selectively
permeable membrane?

Or… what is up with this dialysis tube

and the iodine?

Watch the video showing how the experiment

will be set up.
1. What is special about the
dialysis tube?

It’sTTAT
It’s like a membrane, it’s
permeable 2.

2.
What happens when iodine comes
into contact with starch?

It turns purple or black

Consider the experimental set-up. Recall that HYPERTONIC means that the solution
has MORE of the substance. Use the highlight tool to indicate your answers.
3. Which is more concentrated in starch? [ beaker / tube ]
4. Which is more concentrated in iodine? [ beaker / tube ]
5. With regard to iodine, which is hypertonic? [ beaker /
tube ]
6. With regard to starch, which is hypertonic? [ beaker /
tube ]
Make predictions about which substances will
move:
7. If the tube is permeable to starch, which way would the starch move?
[ into the tube / out of tube]
8. If the tube is permeable to iodine, which way would the iodine move?
[ into the tube / out of tube ]

9. If the tube is permeable to iodine, what color would you expect the
contents to change? [ orange / purple / no change ]
What about the solution in the beaker? [ orange / purple / no change ]

10. If the tube is permeable to starch, what color would you expect it to change? [ orange /
purple / no change ]
11. What about the solution in the beaker?
[ orange / purple / no change ]
This video will show how the tube
and beaker change over time. The
video has been sped up, but it
took about 5 minutes for the
changes to occur.

12. Describe what happened. Direct

The stuff inside the tube turned purple

13. Complete this chart with details about what you observed.
Starting Color Color after 5 minutes

Solution in Beaker GOLDEN GOLDEN

Solution in Tube WHITE
TOP IS WHITE
Analysis
14. Based on your observations, which substance moved, the iodine or the starch? Iodine

15. How did you determine this? Iodine is an indicator. Indicators that change colors in the presence of the given substance

16. The dialysis tube was permeable to which substance?

Iodine

17. How did you determine Dialysis tube is semi-permeable, iodine molecules are small enough to pass through it
this? through the membrane

18. Lab Summary - Explain how this experiment

models a cell membrane. Use the following
terms in your explanation: selectively
permeable, hypertonic, diffusion, indicator.
