lenge. The other key issue is finding per-
sonnel – ideally experienced, qualified and
competent – but some companies take what
they can get and train them as needed.
“There are actually tower cranes stand-
ing with no operators,” says Ronald Gray,
who established the Tower Crane School of
Phoenix earlier this year in Arizona. “They
can’t find anybody. I’ve never seen anything
like this in my life.” He adds that there are
also a lot of operators at work who lack
experience.
“There is definitely a skills shortage,”
confirms Chalupny. “It’s definitely a prob-
lem for the industry. But it hasn’t really
affected us. We have our own program of
bringing people in and training them. We
have our own training center.”
Morrow minimizes its staffing needs by
offering mainly bare rental, and it subcon-
tracts erection and dismantling. Others,
such as General Crane, offer full service
with operators and erection crews. While
staffing has “always been a problem in
Florida,” says Jim Robertson, managing
partner of General Crane, he finds it is
easier to find tower crane operators than
mobile crane operators. Even harder to
locate are technicians and mechanics. To
tackle this problem Robertson has recruit-
ed technicians from the United Kingdom,
Austria, Germany, and Canada. However,
the situation north of the border seems no
easier. “There is an immense labor short-
age in Canada, and in many cases, there is a
surplus in projects available and a shortage
in workers qualified to do the job,” says
Gonzalo Aleman from the Toronto office
of Caribbean Tower Cranes Ltd.
In regions where tower crane operators

At Crane Rental and Rigging
om
we have used lots of different
greases in the past to find
Lube - a - bo
the right grease to keep our
® booms sliding smooth. We
found LUBE-A-BOOM® to
perform to our standards
in the heat as well as the
severe cold. We tested
TMJDLKVTUHPUTMJDLFS LUBE-A-BOOM® on our
Grove GMK 5180 and
LTM1400 Liebherr. We found
it to outperform any previous
greases. We now use the
product company wide and
have not seen any problems
with boom wear pad wear and
we have not had to re-grease
as frequently as before.
