Upper and Lower Bound Theorem Graphs of Polynomial Functions
Upper Bound Theorem
Using synthetic division, if a function f(x) divided by a positive number (c) has the quotient all positive,
then there are no real roots greater than c.
Lower Bound Theorem
Using synthetic division, if a function f(x) divided by a negative number (c) has the quotient alternating in
signs, then there are no real roots less than c.
A chef needs to cook a large amount of food in a short period of time. He quickly assigned Luke to buy
the necessary amount of ingredients. Due to his panic, the chef gave the ciphered recipe to Luke and
just told him to buy one less than the upper bound. One of the ingredients has been labeled as T(x) =
6x^3 - 137x^2 - 21x + 19. How much of this ingredient should Luke buy?
1| 6 -137 -21 19
6 -131 -152
6 -131 -152 -133
23| 6 -137 -21 19
138 23 46
6 1 2 65
23 is the upper bound of the function.
22 is the amount Luke should buy. (one less than the upper bound)
Graphs of Polynomial Functions
The highest degree term of a polynomial determines the end behavior of its graph. If the coefficient is
positive, the right end goes upward. In contrast, if the coefficient is negative, the right end goes
downward. If the coefficient is odd, its ends go opposite ways (up and down). On the other hand, if it is
even, both ends go one direction (both up or both down).
Extra: Since the graph of any odd-degree function has both end behaviors pointing opposite directions,
it always hits the x-axis at least once. Even-degree functions hit the x-axis in an even number of times or
not at all.
You were tasked to interpret a graph of the total sales of a company. The company managed to have
their sales represented by the function S(x) = 5x 5 - 6x2 + 14x - 10. The manager asked when to stop their
production to get the maximum efficiency for their company. Without seeing the graph of the function,
you immediately said not to stop the production. Why?
For this problem, we only needed to determine the right end behavior of the graph. In this case,
whatever the highest degree is, it will not matter because the sign of the coefficient determines the right
end behavior. For the given polynomial, the coefficient is 5 and it is a positive number. Since it is a
positive number, the right end of the graph will go upward. Thus, more production goes toward the
success of the company.
Pic nung graph sa problem. Wag ilagay kung di naman kelangan pero kung sobrang luwag talaga edi sige
lang ilagay mo na AHHAHAHA
