Superposition Theorem

1) The document describes an experiment to verify the superposition theorem in electrical engineering. 2) The superposition theorem states that the overall response (current or voltage) at any point in a linear network equals the sum of the responses of each individual source considered separately. 3) The experiment uses a superposition theorem trainer kit with two DC voltage sources, a digital voltmeter, digital ammeter and resistances to measure currents with individual sources applied and the total current, verifying the theorem if the sums agree.

EXPERIMENT NO:-EE/BE/ES-191/05
TITLE:-SUPERPOSITION THEOREM

OBJECIVE:-To verify superposition theorem.

THEORY:-The superposition theorem states that in a linear network containing several

sources (including dependent sources) the overall response (loop current or node voltage)
At any point in the network equals the sum of the responses of each individual source
considered separately with all other sources made inoperative i.e replaced by their internal
resistances.
APPARATUS:-One superposition Theorem trainer kit with two d.c voltage sources. One
digital voltmeter, one digital ammeter and some resistances.

OBSERVATION :-

OF
OBS. (Ω) (Ω) (Ω) (V) (V) (ma) (ma) (ma) (I’1+ I’2)
(ma)

RESULTS:-The sums recorded in the last column of the table must agree with the
corresponding values of Iobs .If it is so superposition theorem is verified.

PRECAUTIONS:-1. All the connections should be tight.

2. Before connecting instruments check their zero settings.
3. The direction of currents should be correctly identified.

SELF E EXPLANATION :-According to this theorem , if there are a number of emfs acts
independently of the others the value of current in any conductor is the algebraic sum of
the currents due to each emf. Similarly, voltage across any conductor is the algebraic sum
of the voltages. Which each emf would have produced while acting singly. In other words
current in or voltage across any conductor of the network is obtained by superimposing the
currents and voltages due to each emf in the network. It is important to keep in mind that
this theorem is applicable only to linear networks where current is linearly related to
voltage as per ohm,s law.
