Defining Geometric Sequences

While an arithmetic progression has each term differing by a constant amount, a geometric
progression is a progression in which the ratio of successive terms is constant.

In other words, each successive term is formed by multiplying the preceding term by a constant
number. This is the common ratio.

For example,

2,4 , 8,16,32 , … (Geometric Sequence)

×2 (common ratio)

Question 1

Nth Term in Geometric Sequences

The formula for the nth term of a geometric progression is given by:

n−1
T n=a r

From this we deduce the relationship between each successive term:

T n +1
=r
Tn

Question 3

c) Prove that T 9 × T 11=25 T 20
d) Find which terms are between 1000 and 100,000 and how many such terms exist

a ( 1−r n )
Sn =
