AIR LAUNCHED APPLICATIONS

It is recognised that a capability gap exists for a multi-role lightweight missile which can provide high lethality
against the full spectrum of targets. The Lightweight Multi-role Missile (LMM)
system satisfies this capability gap.

APPLICATIONS FEATURES & BENEFITS

LMM is a lightweight, precision strike missile, which •• Multi-role capability for light and heavy
has been designed to be fired from a variety of platforms:
lightweight, tactical platforms. --Ground to ground
--Air to ground
Integrated onto a helicopter platform, the system •• Immediate launch capability - no seeker cool
can specifically destroy threats from small ships down
and fast inshore attack craft or threats from light
aircraft, UAVs or micro-lites. Thales is developing •• ‘Soft’ launch for release from lightweight
LMM, for the UK MoD Future Anti-Surface Guided platforms
Weapon Light requirement. •• Fully controlled engagement using multi-mode
secure guidance
This programme will deliver a stand off weapon •• Fire on the move capability
effect for the Wildcat helicopter. A five pod •• Automatic cut-down capability for missile in
missile launcher will be integrated for the flight, thereby preventing fratricide
FASGW(L) requirement however different launcher •• Covert, reactive and flexible
configurations for the LMM Weapon System are •• Highly accurate precision strike with low
available dependent on the application. collateral damage
•• Very fast re-engagement
The missile, sealed in its canister, consists of a •• Compatible with existing semi-active laser
two stage motor, warhead and dual mode fuze, designators and laser beam-riding systems
together with guidance electronics and a highly
accurate control actuator system. The missile has
different guidance modes including laser beam
riding and/or laser designation to ensure precision MISSILE SPECIFICATIONS
attack of targets with man-in-the-loop or automatic •• Lightweight 13kg
guidance. The fragmenting shaped charge warhead •• Greater than Mach 1.5 velocity
coupled with the laser proximity fuze provides •• No launch recoil
excellent lethality against a wide range of targets.
This is achieved with low collateral damage which is •• Operational range >8km
essential in built-up and urban environments. •• Combination warhead with shaped charge
penetrator and pre-fragmented blast warhead
with matching proximity fuze.
LMM guidance is provided via the optical tracker
system fitted to the launch platform. This guidance •• Maintenance free - hermetically sealed launch
unit is contained within an optically stabilised tube
mount which normally comprises CCD and thermal
cameras coupled with an automatic target tracker
(ATT) and the missile laser guidance unit.

LMM possesses excellent lethality against

conventional and asymmetric threats including
APCs, wheeled and tracked vehicles, because of the
shaped charge coupled with the pre-fragmented
blast warhead, matched with the highly sensitive
proximity fuze.
