Modem 2 Modem 2
Modem 2 Modem 2
Introduction
Using Firmware F2.10 8/3/2010 PP, it is possible to make a modem to modem Ethernet connection as shown
below. The following diagram shows the configuration for a modem to modem connection. In this connection the
following must exist:
• One modem must be configured as a Server Router (#1)
• The other modem must be configured as a Client Gateway (#2)
• The Ethernet ports of the two modems must be on different subnets (192.168.254.0 /24, 192.168.0.0 /24)
• The Assigned Client IP of the Server Router must equal the Ethernet port address of the Client Gateway
• Devices connecting to the Client Gateway must use the IP of the Client gateway as their default Gateway
address
LAN Computers LAN Computers
IP: 192.168.254.18 IP: 192.168.0.18
GateWay: 192.168.254.xxx GateWay: 192.168.0.253
Configuration Characteristics
• In this configuration the Client Gateway will initiate the call to the preset phone number of the Server Router
location.
• Devices on Subnet: 192.168.0.0 /24 that are to communicate to Subnet: 192.168.254.0 /24 must use the Client
Gateway’s IP address as their default gateway
• The Server Router will respond to all ARP request with its own MAC address. Therefore, additional routers
can not be used in its subnet, nor can devices on this subnet communicate to each other. Devices in the
192.168.254.0 /24 subnet should, but do not have to ,use the Server Router’s IP address as their default
gateway
Procedure
By default the modem will have an IP address of 192.168.0.254. Configuring of the modem requires that you use an
HTML browser such as Internet Explorer to access the modem’s we page.
1. Connect the modem to the same LAN as the computer that will be used to configure the modem
2. Place the computer on a 192.168.0.0/24 subnet (default subnet for modem)
3. Open an HTML browser and enter the modem’s default IP address (192.168.0.254)
This procedure will first configure the Server Router. Both modems will be set to PPP mode (default)
4. Once in the modem’s web page, click on the General Configuration folder. A Network Password window
will appear. Enter the following default information:
Use Name (leave blank)
Password private

5. Click on the General Configuration / IP page and give this modem a Static IP address. Keep in mind that the
modems must be on different subnets as explained above. Click the Confirm button and then click the
save and reboot link . Check both the save and reboot boxes. Click Confirm
When the modem reboots, you will need to log back in using the new IP address
6. Once back in the modems web page, click on the General Configuration / Application page. You will see the
following:
7. Click the Confirm button and then click the save and reboot link . Check both the save and reboot boxes.
Click Confirm

Configuring the Client Gateway
1. Connect the modem to the same LAN as the computer that will be used to configure the modem
2. Place the computer on a 192.168.0.0/24 subnet (default subnet for modem)
3. Open an HTML browser and enter the modem’s default IP address (192.168.0.254)
When the modem reboots you will need to log back in using the new IP address. See next page

6. Once back in the modems web page, click on the General Configuration / Application page and set the
Operation Mode to Client(Gateway)
7. Click the Confirm button and you should then see the page below:
This concludes the configuring of the Client(Gateway). When the modems are first powered on, the Client(Gateway)
will dial the entered Dialup Phone number. Once the connection is made the following will occur:
• The connection will continue to exist as long as data continues to flow to the device/s on the Server(Router)’s
subnet
• Once data stops flowing, the Client(Gateway) will wait the Link Idle Time period before it breaks the
connection
• Once a device on the Client(Gateway)’s subnet attempts to access a device on the Server(Router)’s subnet,
the Client(Gateway) will initiate the dialing process again and reconnect
• Devices connecting to the Client(Gateway)’s Ethernet port, must use the Client(Gateway)’s IP address as their
default gateway (see page #1 for details)
Connection Diagnostics
• When the Client(Gateway) is connecting to the Server(Router), the AA LED on the Server(Router) will turn
off with each phone ring
