The Big Blue Whale
The Big Blue Whale
The Big Blue Whale
-Blue whales are the largest animals ever to have lived - bigger even than the largest of the
dinosaurs.
- They live in all seas, and some species also live in tropical and subtropical rivers;
-Blue whales, the largest animals on Earth, are hundreds of times heavier than large hippos.
-Today, four groups of mammals live in the water: That are whales, sea lions (seals),
manatees and otters. They all have a spindly body.
-Blue whales are classified as mammals. This means that even though they live in water they
have to come to the surface for air;
-they live in the ocean and they can live about 80 to 90 years;
- The lower part of the body of the whale often has a yellowish tint, due to all the
microorganisms that live on its skin.
-Few people know that blue whales are also the loudest animals. Their grunting, buzzing and
moaning sounds reach over 180 decibels.
-Blue whales got his name for his color but blue only looks blue under the water;
-It feeds almost exclusively on small crustaceans, which are also called krill, which it scoops
out of the water with wasps;
-Whales are mammals that, you won't believe it, breathe with lungs, even though they spend
their whole lives in the sea.
-They communicate with each other with low-frequency sounds that can be heard kilometers
away (up to 1,600 km away in good conditions).
- There are between 10,000 and 25,000 blue whales in the world. It is an endangered species
and they are on the Red List of the World Conservation Union (IUCN)
-A blue whale's mouth is so big you could fit a whole football team in it.
-The largest land animal, the elephant, does not even reach the weight of the blue whale's
tongue.
- A blue whale's blood vessels are wide enough for a human to swim through.
-The blue whale is a more solitary animal and rarely stays in group.
- Its stomach can hold one ton of krill and it needs to eat about four tons of krill each day.
- They are the loudest animals on Earth and are even louder than a jet engine.
- Their calls reach 188 decibels, while a jet reaches 140 decibels. Their low frequency whistle
can be heard for hundreds of miles and is probably used to attract other blue whales.
-Blue whales have been found in all oceans around the world except for the Arctic Ocean.
-The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the species as endangered.
- Hopefully with time, the planet’s largest gentle giants will again roam the seas aplenty.
