2 INTRODUCTION
The mouse is a small, movable device
that lets you control a range of things on
a computer. Most types of mouse have
two buttons, and some will have a wheel
in between the buttons. Most types of
mouse connect to the computer with a
cable, and use the computer's power to
work. Some types of mouse are wireless.
A mouse consists of a metal or plastic housing or casing, a ball that sticks out of figure1

the bottom of the casing and is rolled on a flat surface, one or more buttons on
the top of the casing, and a cable that connects the mouse to the computer.

2.1 WHEN DID THE MOUSE COMPUTER COME OUT?

The first computer mouse was conceived in the early 1960s by Douglas
Engelbart. At the time, he was the director of the Augmentation Research
Center (ARC) at Stanford Research Institute (SRI), in Menlo Park, California.
The mouse was just a tiny piece of a much larger project , started in 1962,
aimed at augmenting human intellect. At the time of the invention of the mouse,
Engelbart had already been exploring possible ways for people to increase their

capability to solve complex problems for almost a dozen years. After Engelbart
got the idea, he hired Bill English, who had been working in another lab at SRI,
to make the hardware design. Later on, the group was joined by Jeff Rulifson,
who made a big difference in the quality of the software involved.

Doug Engelbart and William (Bill) English envisioned problem-solvers using

computer-aided working stations to augment their efforts. They required the
ability to interact with information displays
using some sort of device to move a cursor
around the screen. There were several types
of devices then in use or being considered for
use: the light pen, joysticks, etc. Engelbart
and English, however, were looking for the
best and the most efficient device. In 1964,
the first prototype of a computer mouse was
made to use with a graphical user interface

(GUI), “windows.”

Types of mouse
We have several types of Computer Mouse. There is no single way to categorize
them so, we thought to put all these types of Computer Mouse based on
connectivity, how they sense the movement, and other types.

Wire
wired mouse is that type which uses a wired connection between the mouse and
the computer. Some might think that a wired mouse is A pretty outdated
technology. But that’s not case.

PS/2
Part of the IBM’s Personal System/2 series of PCs, the PS/2 Port is available for
keyboard and mouse. It is the most popular wired mouse style before being
replaced by the USB.

USB
The most popular wired Mouse is a USB Mouse. Before USB, we had different
ports and connectors for various devices such as mice, keyboard, joystick,
printer, modem, etc.

Bluetooth
Another popular wireless mouse format is the one that uses Bluetooth for
communication instead of RF. As most laptops have Bluetooth built into them
(usually a combo Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Card), you don’t need any additional
USB receiver modules. Just turn on the Bluetooth Mouse, connect it to a laptop
and start using it.
