Task 1

1.1. “… A man reaps what he sows.”1 These are the words that my grandmother would
often say to me in my formative years, and they instilled the importance of
independence and having a solid work ethic. I agree with the statement mentioned in
1.1.a because in every step of the bread making process, she asked the animals in the
barn for help and they refused to offer any of their assistance. She deserved to eat the
bread all by herself because the literally reaped what she had sown. Isaac Newton’s
third law of motion states that ‘for every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction’2.
Refusing to share the bread with the other animals was not a selfish thing to do, but an
act of fairness, and this is justified by Newton’s third law.

1.2. Everyone wants to benefit from something without putting in the required amount of
work. It has reminded of the saying ‘success has many fathers, but failure is an
orphan’3, which means that ‘victory is claimed by all, [but] failure [is claimed] to one
alone'. The Little Red Hen’s friends had not worked for the bread, but they want to claim
the benefits without accepting any responsibility in the process of making the bread.

Task 2

a. You are really making a storm in a teacup about this. It is just a television show, not a
compatibility test. b. My friend called to tell me that her significant other dozed off when
they were watching her favourite reality television show. She claimed that he showed no
interest in what was happening in the show, and started saying that perhaps they are
not meant to be together because they have different preferences in terms of
entertainment.

Task 3 3.1 . Tshepiso Thobejane, known by his community members as Tichere,

was an activist who initially trained as a lawyer. He was expelled from university

because of this political activities. He became an educator, but left the teaching
profession to become a truck driver at PanAm Pharmaceuticals Pty Ltd, a firm
located in Polokwane. Tshepiso admiringly stared at himself before going to the
pharmaceutical firm that would employ him. later He organised and led labour
strikes at his firm, and at firms whose members belong to the Mokga wa
Bakganni ba Teransefala (MBT; Transvaal Truck Driver's Union). His actions had
a tendency to negatively impact the lives of the people around him. Tichere led a
life of secrecy, where found himself entangled in a love triangle and had a love
child. Tichere escaped from police custody, after he had been arrested on the
charge of a hit and run near Soweto. The police believed that he had done so
intentionally in order to use the child's intestines to perform a ritual. He later
found himself at a hospital where he looked in the mirror, but did not see
the same person that he admired before going to the job interview at his firm.
As he stared at his own reflection, he reflected on what truly makes a person.
He also wondered whether this is determined by the image that he saw as
reflected in the mirror, the physical form that other people can see or the
abstract substance that is said to make a man; his inner being.

3.2. I caught a glimpse of my reflection on a wooden framed mirror. There I saw

someone who was still staring at me after a few blinks. A closer look exposed blemishes
and a few tiny black moles. ‘Dermatosis papulosa nigra’ is what I recall a beauty editor8
calling them; they are harmless and hereditary. I remember thinking that they were
beauty spots. What is beauty anyway? Is it defined by a symmetrical face? A quick look
made me see that my right eye is slightly bigger than my left eye. Is beauty defined
scientifically by a golden ratio9 of beauty? Beauty is only skin deep, because there is
more to a person than what they look like. In my reflection I shifted my focus from my
form to my substance, and thought of how much I have grown, and admired that I was
able to see that I was not defined by what people saw externally, but also by my
thoughts and the potential I have to someday make a significant contribution to society.
