PE 10 QUARTER 3 MODULE 1

ACTIVE RECREATION: DANCE & HEALTH BENEFITS

Introduction
After going through this module, you are expected to: describe
what recreational and dance is; determine what physical activities
can sustain fitness; and enumerate health benefits of dancing.
Most Essential Learning Competencies:
• Assess physical activity, exercise and eating habits.
• Engage in moderate to vigorous physical activities for at least
60 minutes a day in and out of school.
• Express a sense of purpose and belongingness by
participating in physical activity-related community services
and programs.

Lesson: ACTIVE RECREATION: DANCE & HEALTH BENEFITS


Active Recreation is a therapeutic refreshment of relaxations of
one’s body and mind. Activities done for this purpose are called
recreational activities. Its main objective is to revitalize the
physical, mental, social, and emotional aspects of a person.
In today’s situation, the world is facing a pandemic (COVID19), we
all need to engage in recreational activities to relieve our tensions.
Dance is a recreational activity that can develop our physical,
mental, social, and emotional health. Dancing as part of our
lifestyle can surely sustain our fitness. But it should be coupled
with proper eating habits and weight management in order for a
person to live a healthy lifestyle.
Dance is defined in different ways by different people or authors of
the art form.

• Dance transforms images, ideas and feelings into sequences


of movement that are personally and socially significant.
• Dance is a performance art form consisting of purposefully
selected sequences of human movement that has aesthetic
and symbolic value, and is acknowledge as dance within a
culture.
• Dance, the movements of the body in a rhythmic way, usually
to music and within a given space, for the purpose of
expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply
taking delight in the movement itself.
• Dance is a broadly conceived as physical movement organized
into patterns in time and space.
Have you wondered where the dance came from? Or when did it
started? Who is the first person who learns to dance? In this
module we will answer all of these questions.

UNDERSTANDING DANCE
The universal knowledge of dance is a movement using the body
as the medium or instrument to express its meaning, or
significance. To comprehend a dance, one must gain background
and understanding from simple to complex movements interpreting
how and why the use of the body part and whole body to a
particular order hence, Dance becomes a physical activity executed
in a musical pattern and an accompaniment. The nature of human
body calls for its natural impulse and rhythm and therefore
exhibits a natural phenomenon on how it moves in space (an area
of the performance) or the body space itself or space that is referred
to as the freedom of movement without the obstruction wherein the
body that expresses unique properties and qualities.

HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS OF DANCE


• Plato concurred with his master Socrates that every educated
man should know how to dance gracefully - underscoring the
manly exercises that kept a body strong, supple and ready to do its
duty are all taken from the training called weapon dance or war
dance.

• From among the Greeks, dancing was


associated with Dionysian merrymaking, as
evidence on vase paintings and stone
carvings as presented by scientist of the
time.

• The early Christians included their teachings a love hate


relationship to the body, as they could not accommodate the
dancing body to their worship.

On other hand, Dances are unlike paintings or sculpture.


Apparently and in certain cultural context, they are created,
appreciated and analyzed as art works of human movement.
The earliest history of human dance is a continuing mystery. Some
archaeologists have speculated that dance originated some 5,000
to 9,000 years ago in early agricultural cultures. Speculations
aside. Our specific knowledge of prehistoric dances is lacking, and
many experts have extrapolated dance history from the preserved
ritual dances of various preliterate societies.

Many native dances reflect most of the purposes of dance. They


are of a ritualistic or ceremonial nature.
-The war dance, expressing prayer for success and thanksgiving for
victory. -The dance of exorcism or healing, performed by shamans
to drive out evil spirits;
-The dance of invocation, calling on the gods for help in farming,
hunting, the fertility of human beings and animals, and other tribal
concerns;
-Initiation dances for secret societies;
-Mimetic dances, illustrating events in tribal history, legends, or
mythology;
-Dances representing cosmic processes;
-The dance of courtship, an invocation for success of love;
-Dance of religious ecstasy, in which hypnotic or trance-like states
are induce.

Dance teaches the importance of movement and fitness in the


variety of reasons. Dancers learn to coordinate muscles to move
through proper positions and can be a way to stay fit for people of
all ages, shapes, and sizes. Dance is an enjoyable health-promoting
physical activity which many people include into their lifestyle
today. Not only is it important physically but contributes to one’s
mental health and social interactions.

Dances can be classified as Folk or Native, Foreign, Folk, Social,


Ballroom, creative or interpretative, contemporary, street dance,
Hip-hop, and other similar forms. Dancing has a wide range of
benefits including:
• Improve condition of your heath and lungs
• Increase muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness
• Increase aerobic fitness
• Improve muscle tone and strength
• Weight management
• Stronger bones and reduce osteoporosis
• Better condition, agility and flexibility
• Improve balance and spatial awareness
• Increase physical confidence
• Improved mental functions

dancing it involves body movement through given and free space
with rhythmic pattern. Dance can be classified as folk, social,
ballroom, creative, interpretative, contemporary, street dance, hip-
hop dance. It enhances good mood and makes a person live a long
happy life.
