Discussion Case 3

The internet of things (IoT) has become a mainstream topic of conversation, current research studies and
technological advances have made IoT the center focus of their work and new investment are underway to
implement and embed technological innovations into city infrastructures thereby enabling “smart”
capabilities.

Watch the video in the link below and answer the following questions:

1. Define the IoT in your own words.

The Internet of things (lo T) is a group of physical devices with sensors and processing ability, which are
run by specific softwares or any other technologies for exchanging data with different devices within the
group and their related systems. Devices do not need to be connected to the public internet, they only
need to be connected to a network and be individually addressable. Io T digitalizes the daily facts, sorts
the data and provides timely information, therefore, it is applied broadly in transportation, production,
construction, shopping and medical treatment.

2. Do a search on the internet and find the following:

1. Five facts about the IoT (good or bad)
● By end-2022, 29 billion devices will be on the IoT network.
● By 2022, 100% of the global population is expected to have LPWAN coverage.
● IoT has the potential to generate $4T to $11T in economic value by 2025.
● 97% of organizations feel there are challenges to creating value from IoT-related data.
● The IoT in banking and financial services market size is expected to grow to $2.03B by 2023.

2. Identify and copy and paste 5 links to internet sources that you assess as credible
and that provide interesting information about the IoT.

3. Give an example of your daily life living in a smart city. Elaborate on the good, the bad and the dark
side of it. Conclude by stating whether you would like to see this happen or not, and why.
Living in a smart city, you can enjoy all the convenience that the digital infrastructures bring to you such as
updated information on road conditions, applications of legal procedures done via the internet, pay your bill
electronically, shop and even have entertainment virtually. Therefore, we have more time to enjoy our life
but living in the smart city is also not an easy task. We have to give up a certain level of privacy as we are
exposing more of the big data (mandatory source for the smart city). Consequently, we have a higher
possibility to encounter cyber crimes and suffer loss financially.. The trend of smart city is non-stopping,
more cities will develop as a “programmed city” in future, some people may not like to see this happen, but
we have to accept and grow with this trend as this is the new living style.

4. What are your feelings/thoughts about the IoT and smart cities as part of every person’s
1. Daily lives?
Io T surely brings convenience to our daily lives, we can use google maps to find our destinations easily,
have comments for food and beverage or shopping choices. We can learn the road conditions and make
our plans accordingly. All these conveniences will encourage mobility of people, meaning people are more
willing to travel around or explore new places as they know that it is an easy task nowadays.

2. Work environment?
Io T facilitates the work environment and creates new trends. With the introduction of technology, work
efficiency is greatly improved. Also, the new work modes such as WFH and zoom meeting are resulting
from Io T.

3. What are the dangers and risks?

The dangers and risks from the Io T is the great exposure of our information, identities on the internet, we
can never eliminate the possibility our data will be mis-used by anyone on the internet. Also, privacy is
another issue, as lots of sensors and cameras are used in the smart, they may capture our information
anytime without our consent.

5. When combined with artificial intelligence and big data, what do you think the possibilities of smart
cities?
Artificial intelligence may help to develop the program/application in an automatic mode and more closely
to human’s way of living. Big data are like historical information for developers to understand the
performance of the technology. Without them, the smart cities can’t improve easily.

6. The way smart cities are evolving, do you think that it is good for humanity?
I think smart cities is good for humanity as technology is part of our life, nobody or no country will cease
their step. Like in the Renaissance, people did not expect it affected humanity for centuries.

7. How will G5 effect smart cities and people living in it?

G5 enables a faster transmission of data, may facilitate the applications/technologies related to the smart
city program and encourage more people to adhere to the smart cities functions provided.
