House Features
Back door A door at the back of a house used to access the garden/yard. There is a cat-flap in the
back door so the cat can come and go as she pleases.
Balcony A small platform, often on the outside of a house, enclosed by a wall or balustrade, with
access from an upper-floor window or door. It’s a luxury to have a balcony on a lovely sunny day.
Basement/cellar The floor of a building that is partly or entirely below ground level. Some
flats/apartments are entirely or partially below ground level, these are referred to as basement flats.
During my time in London, I lived in a basement flat. It was so dark and had lots of damp issues.
Bedroom A room in which a person can relax and sleep. In UK houses these are often situated on the
upstairs. Our house has three bedrooms…well it’s more like two and a half. We turned the boxroom
into a single room. It’s tiny
Boxroom A small room in a house used for storing large items like suitcases and unused furniture.
We don’t have an attic here so we have to store everything either in the boxroom, or shed.
Brick A material used to build houses. You can find them in different colours but the most common is
red. The majority of houses in the UK are made from brick. We need to find a good bricklayer to
finish building the brick wall at the end of our garden.
Cabinets Small storage space with doors. Similar to a cupboard. We often have cabinets in the
kitchen and bathroom. Can you check the glass cabinet in the kitchen to see if I put the theatre
tickets in there, please?
Carpet A thick material that covers the entire floor. Similar to a rug, but a rug only covers part of a
floor and can be moved. We recently laid a cream carpet in the bedroom, and I am devastated
because I split red nail varnish on it last night.
Ceiling The top surface of a room. We decided to paint the ceiling black. It was a bold decision but I
think it looks amazing.
Corridor A long passage between rooms in a house or apartment. I have hung several family photos
in the corridor.
Countertop A long flat narrow surface or table in a kitchen, at which people are served food, or food
is prepared. Put the plates on the countertop and I will plate up the dinner.
Decking A wooden floor outside that is attached to the house. It’s going to be dry for a few days so I
must stain the decking tomorrow.
Dining room A room that is used for eating meals. It has a table and chairs. Do you want to eat
dinner in the dining room or in front of the telly?
Doorbell A bell located by the front door that people use to let you know they are there. We tried
the doorbell but there was no answer, so we used the knocker instead.
Driveway A private area at the front of a house that you can drive and park your car on. For security
reasons, I prefer to park my car on my driveway instead of on the road.
En suite A bathroom or shower room directly attached to a bedroom for exclusive use. You have the
en suite and the rest of the family can use the family bathroom
Entrance hall The space just inside the house that the front door opens into. This space often
contains hooks for coats and storage for shoes. Our house is quite cold. The main problem is that the
entrance hall is so draughty.
Front room (also known as the living room or lounge) A room used to socialise and relax. It usually
contains a television and a sofa. Let’s sit in the front room and watch a film together.
Fireplace A place for a fire in the house. It is built into the wall of a room and usually connects to a
chimney. We want to replace the fireplace surround at some point.
