CLARIFY YOUR TASK

Before you embark on your one-semester journey in Observation and Teaching
Assistantship, it may be good to be reminded of the personal and professional qualities
which we, teachers, ought to possess. Striving to be the best teacher, the teacher who
will leave an imprint of himself/herself on his/her students, is a never-ending journey.
The journey began three years ago when you started discussing who the professional
teacher is in your course on The Teaching Profession, etc., etc. The journey gets more
focused and challenging now as you observe and assist your Field Study Resource
Teacher. Don’t you worry! You have been prepared for this for three years and you will
end up stronger, happier and wiser!
Let’s buckle down for work!
1. You will review the qualities of good teachers as contained in documents
such as the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPSTs) and the
Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Framework and the Code of Ethics for
Professional Teachers. 2. You will view on YouTube
2. TEDx talks on “What makes a good teacher great” and “The Power of a
Teacher”.

ANALYZE
1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the
TEDx videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess?
Answer: For me excellent communication skills, listening skills, adaptability,
empathy, and patience are all qualities of a good teacher. The objectives
and components of effective teaching include a dynamic classroom
presence, a welcoming learning environment for students with various
levels of experience and attitudes, the sharing of best practices, and a
lifelong love of learning.

2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies?

Answer: Being a teacher make us adaptable making it possible for us to
deliver such abilities beyond professional means. As a teacher, we must
extend our efforts and prioritizes the future of our students, which why we
should be adaptable and flexible in order for as to have a deeper
understanding of our students.

3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies

to plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning,
compute and report grades? Explain your answer.
Answer: No. This is because possessing the professional competencies to
plan a lesson, execute a plan, manage a class, assessing learning and
computing and reporting grades are some of the factors that make a
teacher good, but as a teacher being good is not enough. A teacher with
skills having no empathy is a poor unproductive teacher, having a
connection with the student is one of the most essential steps in having an
effective teaching.

4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important - personal qualities or

professional competencies?
Answer: Personal qualities are characteristics that describe a person's
personality. Personal qualities are important in describing an individual's
identity, temperament, and nature, which combine to form who they are.
When dealing with other people, an individual projects his or her personal
qualities in his or her values. Professional qualities, on the other hand,
refer to the characteristics that can be used to demonstrate to your
employer and coworkers that you are in a better position and have
everything it takes to handle a given job perfectly.
However, it is important that a teacher must have a great balance
of their personal qualities and professional competencies. Being a good
person is not enough to produce good quality students, being a textbook
person only makes you a robot. To be a great teacher one must have a
great balance of this two, in order for them to be an efficient teacher,
having connection with their student, knowing how to deliver the lesson
based on how their student perform.

5. Who are the teachers that we remember most?

Answer: I remember a teacher who loves her student, just like her family. I
always remember how she cared for them, how eager she wanted them to
learn, and sometimes providing them the materials they needed in school.
I can hear someone how she is, how she can make it easier for the to
successfully pass her subjects.

REFLECT
1. Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need
improvement in?
Answer: One of my personal characteristics is that I am a good listener. I am
able to communicate effectively. I, too, am a lifelong learner. I have
patience and can adjust, but one skill I lack and need to develop is the
ability to create a connect with the student and become an effective
teacher for my pupils. I appreciate professional competences and real-
world learning, but I'm scared I won't be able to balance these two.

2. Which professional competencies am I strongly capable of

demonstrating?
Answer: As a future educator, I am strongly capable of demonstrating a
good communication to students and identifying their needs. I knew to
myself that I can be all ears when it comes to the moment that they speak.
Analyzing it properly to formulate what should I to deliver the lesson
efficiently and effectively.

3. In which competencies do I need to develop more?

Answer: As a teacher I need to develop my lesson planning skills as well as
my ability to incorporate various teaching techniques.
4. Who are the teachers that we remember most?
Answer: I remember a teacher being so good at creating connections with
her students that those who had already graduated still came back to her room to
talk to her, have a chitchat with her, and talk about how good she was as a
teacher. This connection is a lifelong connection between the students and the
teacher. This connection proves that she can adjust her way of teaching no
matter who her students are.

WRITE ACTION RESEARCH PROMPTS

1. OBSERVE – In Assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that personal traits
such goal-setting that is effective, clear communication, and acting as a role
model for preparedness, adaptability, flexibility, and professional competencies
like ability to use a variety of instructional method were least/not displayed and
as a result, students and educators should be able to communicate openly.

2. REFLECT – The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies

mentioned in #1) may be caused by Students' academic performance is
poor.

3. PLAN – I would like to address this problem (mentioned in # 2) by conducting an

action research on a variety of instructional strategies are used to meet the
needs of all students.

4. ACT
