READING
A

I think the technology we’ve got available in our lives today is amazing and I can’t imagine what life was like in the past
without it. T echnology has come a long way in recent years and it‘s changed our lives in so many ways – it’s given us
freedom and independence! We can book a holiday, we can work or study at home, we can do housework faster, we
can interact with our friends and even watch films and T V while we’re traveling! Not only that, but now we don’t have
to leave home to do things that used to take a lot of time. We just touch a key on our computer and order a meal or
book a train! In general, I’m a fan!

I’m not sure that all these changes in our lives because of technology are positive ones. Now, because we can get all
this information so quickly, we’re expected to do things faster and faster. Something that might have taken days to
do in the past, like researching a project, can be done in minutes on the Internet. T hat means expectations have gone
up about how much people can do in the time they’ve got. Now you have to be able to do ten things a day instead of
two and to think and act faster than ever before. Sometimes it can be stressful.

T here isn’t often much time to relax and be quiet – to just switch off - because people can contact you at any time.
With email, social networking and text messaging all available on our smartphones, we’re constantly connected.
T here are times when that’s good. It’s great when friends get in touch, or when you need to check the time of a bus or
train quickly. However, most times it’s work, or people you don’t want to talk to that contact you. We’re always
receiving advertisements by email and being called by people trying to sell us things.

I moved to Australia with my family last year and technology has really helped me to stay in contact with all my friends
and relatives back in England. I was lonely when we first came to Melbourne but now I use video chat and instant
messaging to talk to them almost every day and we can share photos and videos too. I feel that we’re still connected
and they always know what’s happening in my life. We live in different continents but technology means that we can
easily bridge the distance in the virtual world!

8 Read the blog posts about people’s opinions of technology. Match the comments (1–6) with the people (A–D).
You can use the people more than once.

1 It can be a disadvantage that we are constantly connected to everyone.

2 T echnology helped me to socialise with people I don’t see often.
3 T echnology has created more work for us, not less.
4 T here are definitely more advantages than disadvantages.
5 T echnology means we’re not dependent on other people to do things.
6 It’s stressful that everything is faster nowadays.
