1. The major stages of embryonic development are fertilization, cleavage, blastulation, gastrulation, and neurulation. Fertilization forms the zygote, cleavage forms multicellular blastomeres and the morula, blastulation forms the blastula and blastocoel, gastrulation establishes the germ layers and begins organogenesis, and neurulation forms the neural tube and other organ systems. 2. Most mammals, including humans, have negligible yolk in their eggs. A developing mammalian embryo receives nourishment directly from its mother through the placenta while enclosed in the womb until birth.

II. Guide Question

1. Enumerate the major stages of embryonic development and give the highlights of
each stage.

Fertilization is the process by which gametes fuse to form zygote. Followed by

__________________________________________________________________
Cleavage, which transforms the zygote into multicellular entities, the zygote will
__________________________________________________________________
then be blastomeres, and the ball cells formed is called morula. Blastulation, which
__________________________________________________________________
transforms the embryo into a blastula due to the formation of blastocoel.
__________________________________________________________________
Gastrulation, which is the movement or rearrangement of cells to form the body,
__________________________________________________________________
also known as morphogenetic movements. At this stage, the germ layers
__________________________________________________________________
(ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm) are established, and once these are fully
__________________________________________________________________
developed, different organs begin to form, a process known as organogenesis.
__________________________________________________________________
The final step is neurulation, during which the embryo is renamed neurula. This is
__________________________________________________________________
the stage at which other organ systems begin to form and the embryo obtains
__________________________________________________________________
nourishment from the stored yolk in the egg's cytoplasm.

2. Most mammals, including humans have alecithal type of egg, which means that
there is negligible or no amount of stored yolk in its cytoplasm. How would a
developing mammalian embryo get its nourishment?

__________________________________________________________________
A developing mammalian embryo acquire its nourishment directly
__________________________________________________________________
from its mother, and it does not rely merely on a stored yolk.
__________________________________________________________________
Mammalian embryo receive nutrients through their mother’s placenta

__________________________________________________________________
while they are remained enclosed in their mother’s womb until birth.
