Lecture 2.c.2 Design of Doubly Reinforced Beams

This document provides an example of the design of a doubly reinforced concrete beam. The following key details are provided: 1. The beam has a design moment of 1394 kN.m and dimensions of 375mm wide by 700mm deep. 2. The steel ratio is calculated to be 0.0175. Tension steel of 4593.75mm^2 is determined. 3. As a singly reinforced beam, it does not have adequate moment capacity. 4. As a doubly reinforced beam, the depth of the compression block is 254.325mm and compression steel of 1635.49mm^2 is required. 5. The resisting moment is calculated using the area of tension

Design of Doubly-Reinforced Beams

Lecture 2.c.2 by Engr. Jerry B. Maratas and Engr. Ricardo Fornis

Example 1: Design of Doubly Reinforced Beams

Design a rectangular beam for service MD=441.6 kN.m and service live load moment
ML=540 kN.m if fc’=27.6 MPa and fy=414 MPa. The maximum permissible beam dimensions
are as shown in Fig 5.5.

Note:
