INTERNATIONAL
WOMEN’S DAY After the success of our
offering, we are once again delighted
to deliver a special ‘28 Presents’
issue to mark International Women’s
Day. There is an embarrassment of
richness in the form of talented
2021

women all across the hobby, so all

that is required from us is to create
some space and shine a spotlight
deep into the grimdark and celebrate
their amazing contributions.

It has been wonderful to observe some

positive shifts in the community
over the last twelve months, but
there are still gatekeepers to be
challenged and opportunities for
more inclusive behaviours to be
forged.

Marked annually on the 8th of

March, International Women’s Day
(IWD) is a global day celebrating
the social, economic, cultural and
political achievements of women.
Observed since the early 1900s,
IWD also marks a call to action
for accelerating gender parity.
2022

Significant activity is witnessed

worldwide as groups come together
to celebrate women’s achievements
or rally for women’s equality. You
can find out more by visiting the
IWD website here.

Hi, I am Jodie, a UK-based freelance Illustrator

with a primary focus on dark fantasy. I have
worked in comics (Marvel & TK0) concepting
and I am currently an artist on Magic: The
Gathering. I have been drawing and painting for
as long as I can remember, but have only been
painting digitally with conviction for just over a
decade. My work is a romantic take on gothic
and darker themes. It explores the occult,
magic and doom and gloom. I take inspiration
from goth, metal music and that community
at large. It’s always been where I felt most at
home and I thoroughly enjoy twisting it into my
work.

When it comes to inspiration from fellow

visual artists, I draw a lot from retro fantasy
illustrators like Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo
and Esteban Maroto. The sense of design
and strong composition in their works have
undeniably had an impact on my art. I also
love to lean into classical fine art painters like
Singer Sargent, John Waterhouse and Atkinson
Grimshaw. More contemporary influences
include Ray Donley, Brom, Jeff Simpson, Piotr
Jablonski and Igor Sid. Having said all that, I take
inspiration from everywhere, really: fashion,
nature, cinema, photography and literature to
name a few.

Recently I had the pleasure of collaborating

with Mindwork Games in the production of
some Miniatures based on my work. I have
been blown away by how lovely and warm the
model making community is and I love seeing
what other artists have created from the
figures.

My sculpting has undoubtedly been affected by

this fascination of mine. I was always drawn to
the somewhat darker side of fantasy – treemen
and dryads, beastmen, ancient dragons,
wolves, faerie and so many others. Now that
I’m no longer with Games Workshop, I’m drawn
to start portraying such things for myself, with
miniatures and also artwork, both traditional
and digital. I’ve been building up a world in my
head that is slowly taking shape on paper and
in clay. It’s a place that is firmly embedded in
the darker side of the old ways, but also a part
of my psyche, experiences and observations.
For this world, I’ve just finished sculpting a
Treeman, a somewhat grumpy character and
protector of his forest. To me, each tree has
a personality and a character and a feeling
that emanates from it. Underground the roots
intermingle and communicate, surrounding
you with a living network that follows your
wandering footsteps and perhaps leads you to
choose one path over another. And at the end
of that path? Perhaps my sculpts and art will
show what I find there.

There are many experiences that have inspired

me as I flesh out the stories in my head. One of
them took place when I was a child of around
ten years old and was the starting point for my
first watercolours. My friends and I would often
climb over the back wall of one girl’s garden
into an old area of wood with a river running
through it that was called The Dell. On one of
our explorations we came upon an old white
tree. It looked like it had been dead for many
years. Its bark was gone and the heartwood
was bleached white, apart from a long
blackened patch that ran its length. I imagine
it had been struck by lightning at some point.
We called it Murphy the Lightning Tree and it
became the place we liked to hang out to light
small fires, toast marshmallows and smoke a
forbidden cigarette!

In fact, Murphy was still barely alive… high in

the branches were a few twigs with some tiny
leaves that grew every year. I always liked to
imagine that our frequent youthful company
encouraged him to grow again. I’ve never
forgotten him or the raven that sometimes sat
on his topmost branches, studying us. And so
The Ancient and his story was born.

Deep in the forest in the middle of a sunlit hollow

sits The Ancient. He has long ago forgotten how
to move and sits rooted in place on a witching
stone as old as he is. His cracked arm reaches,
finger outstretched, waiting for the sound of
feathers and the feel of sharp-taloned feet. Last
of the Raven Keepers always has secrets and
he tells them to no-one else for he knows The
Ancient will keep them safe under his withered
grey branches. With every secret the weight of
the world pushes his roots deeper and drags
his branches a little further towards the rocky
ground. One day he will break, his roots will tear
free and all the secrets will wreak their havoc
upon the forest. Until then he sits and waits and
listens.
The Ancient

Painting the Ancient opened the floodgates

somewhat and more creatures began to
demand my attention. I find it’s very much an
organic process. One sketch will birth another
and ideas flow naturally. My world begins to
grow like the tree roots reaching along the
forest floor. Interwoven amongst all this are
inspirations and atmospheres from books, art
and music and the wild places I love to visit.

One of these visits ended up in the painting

of Longbarrow. Padley Gorge in the Peak
District is one of my favourite places. It is full
of the muttering of ancient twisted trees and
the background rush of water in the gorge.
I spent a while there one cold, rainy day. The
branches of the trees were weighed down
with wet moss and the air smelt green and
alive. Lichen and moss covered the boulders
scattered between and underneath the trees
there, dark hollows beneath them where
shadows gather. Nothing moved that day and
there was no birdsong. It felt like a place on the
edge of reality where nothing was quite as it
seemed and respect must be shown to avoid
unwanted consequences. This is the place
where Longbarrow was born.

Longbarrow sees the sun and slowly lies down,

still as death. His back hides amongst the
greens of the forest floor, looking for all the
world like a rotten log, insects crawling amid
the toadstools there. His horns are broken
branches and his beard is matted moss. He
waits patiently for the unwary, though they are
few. There are too many tales in these parts of
monsters, too many memories of children never
returning home. He lies and waits, still as death,
till the sun begins to set and he can rise up and
begin the Hunt.

Books are very important to me and I have

hundreds of them on lots of different subjects
but some stand out as a big influence on what
I’m doing now. Robert Holdstock’s Mythago
Wood series is a truly magical read, hugely
evocative and somehow familiar. Two novels
by Jeff Long, The Descent and Deeper are tales
of the Hadal, creatures that live deep in the
Earth and come to the surface now and again,
wonderfully disturbing stories of a real Hell
that exists deep underground. China Mieville
always intrigues me for the richness of his use
of language and the strange worlds he creates.
There are many more, all leaving pictures in
my mind to inspire. I love Joseph Campbell’s
writings on mythology and Robert Mcfarlane’s
books on the Landscape, Holloways and such.
They all really strike a chord with me and bring
to light the subject of race memory again.

I find that many subjects can give me ideas and

once they have stewed away in my brain for a
while, and been added to and ruminated on,
they give me the first spark of an theme to work
on for a sculpt or painting. The use of language,
particularly the old words for the landscape
and its inhabitants are a rich source of ideas.
The words are lyrical and descriptive and evoke
a mysterious time and place that is just on the
edge of memory. Woodwose, mouldewart,
mockmoon, grimmer-mere, wirricow, glabrous,
scumblesward, quisling. They immediately
fill my head with pictures, sounds and stories
and are often a starting point for a character
in a painting or sketches for a sculpt. Grinagog
came from one such word. She demanded my
attention and insisted I painted her!

This has always been Grinagog’s boulder. High

on the Hurst Knoll, amid the tattered grasses,
she grabs it tightly and wraps it around
with her sinewy roots. She screeches at the
approaching night, fearing that the things that
live in darkness will come and take it away from
her. Surely then her heartwood would crumble
and rot. She would die and leave the Hurst Knoll
empty and it would have to begin its trickster
schemes again.

Grinagog

Much of my collection is art books. They are

wonderful to get lost in and to appreciate the
amazing and varied talent both old and new.
I drag my husband into every antiquarian
bookshop we pass looking for hidden gems. An
old collection of Dulac’s illustrations, a history
of Britain full of engravings of everything from
cathedrals to stone circles and many more
have found their way onto my shelves. People
like Iris Compiet, Paul Bonner, John Wigley, John
Blanche, Patrick Woodruffe, Brian Froud and so
many others constantly inspire me with their
imagination. Everywhere you look online now
there are artists producing the most fantastic
work. Using allegory, hints, puzzles and lore
they draw out the lost places that live inside
and around us. If looking at their art makes you
a little unsettled, you can be sure they have
tapped into something half forgotten. This is
part of the reason I paint so much now. It has
given me a new way to express things that I
would struggle to portray in three dimensions.
Inevitably though, a sculpt will eventually take
shape in my head, almost fully formed and a
natural progression from the art. The two will
always work and live together in one way or
another.

ARTIST FOCUS // TRISH CARDEN

Whilst I’m working, I always listen to podcasts

or music. A lot of the podcasts I follow are to
do with cryptids or mythology, in fact anything
that embraces the strange and unknown.
The world of miniatures has long been a very
male dominated one and it’s good to see more
female involvement now. Listening to podcasts
about the importance of the feminine in older
cultures, particularly some of the darker sides
of the crone myths, brings a balance to what
I do. It also brings a balance to my creativity,
showing the strength and knowledge of the
female underpinning every aspect of life. It
brings a depth, that was lacking before, into
today’s fantasy gaming too, sweeping away the
stereotypes and making for an experience that
feels more authentic. Perhaps some wisdom
deeply buried in the subconscious is coming to
the fore or perhaps I’m just an old hippy!

The Stag King Music also has its place. Sometimes I don’t
want to have to listen and concentrate on
talking while I’m working; sometimes I just
need the familiarity of music I love which
evokes emotions that get me into the “zone”
and let things flow easily. I listen to everything
from Bob Dylan to Heilung, depending on
my mood. The soundtrack for movies is an
important part of the whole experience too.
If something gels in both the visuals and the
music, then it makes for a film that will stay
with you forever. Again it’s about that inner
recognition of something almost beyond
description that leaves me with the feeling that
I have to get my paints or putty out to capture
a little of the mood before it disappears. Films
like Midsommer, The Ritual and The Witch have a
lot of the archetypes and atmosphere that I’m
trying to put into my paintings. The sculpts I’m
working on are another step, not quite so well
defined yet but they’re slowly taking shape.

I hope this has been an interesting glimpse into

my inspirations and internal work process. This
process is, as it should be, constantly evolving.
Seeing the wonderful work shown in 28 and
reading the articles always makes me more
curious and keen to carry on building my world
and I hope you’ll enjoy what I come up with.

Around 2005 a White Dwarf article was

From Dawn of War LAN (local area network)

Warhammer 40K has been part of my life for as
long as I can remember. While I have collected

Hello, I’m Máryse, also known as Chickpaints.

I’ve been painting for seven years and, over
the past year, I’ve been working on creating a
unique painting style, while picking the right
models to try it on. I chose Custodes as I love
the model range and wanted to try something
different. Games Workshop kindly sent me
some models to paint and review, so I picked a
purple and red combination plus some chunky
highlights. I loved painting these. I’m also a
massive Ultramarines fan girl and I’ve included
my favourite models that I’ve painted recently.
I have a thing for dreadnoughts and have over
40 of them!

It’s good to see so many more women painters

joining our amazing hobby community. I have
some exciting stuff coming up soon, which I
hope will help inspire people to pick up a brush!

Hi! I am Ems (aka Ondarkendwings). I’ve been

painting and playing with miniatures, or as I
endearingly like to call them ‘war dollies’, for
most of my life.

I love to create worlds and tell stories with my

work. I take inspiration from a variety of sources
such as movies, art, books and video games. I
am a firm believer that the world of miniatures is
art, and therefore we shouldn’t ignore drawing
inspiration from the wider world.

I entered the world of miniature painting in

2018, when I was introduced to Warhammer.
I have always been a creative person, but this
was new to me and I have loved it since the
very beginning. Miniature painting is a great
hobby to get lost in when you need a break
from reality.

I am a massive Necron fan, to the point where

I am actually painting Necrons in two colour
schemes. The ones with lava bases are units
from my tabletop army and the fiery Necron
is part of my personal collection of Necron
miniatures in my other colour scheme. The
Arch-Revenant is a unit from my growing
Sylvaneth army and the Vyrkos is from my
personal collection.

As you can see, my miniatures are a mix of ice

and fire and my painting style is the result of
letting the miniatures and my creativity lead
the way. There are infinite ways to paint a
miniature, you just need to find your way that
makes your inspiration run wild.

For me, 2021 was marked by a lot of mental

health strife, as I tried to square the circle of
working safely with the public in a pandemic. I
had a lot of time away from work, on doctor’s
orders and when I was able to, I hit the
miniatures world HARD.

Most of my INQ28 style work this year has

been for Turnip28. Something about the setting
really reeled me in, and somehow I’ve ended up
with about four separate armies and enough
buildings to populate a board.

The other thing I’ve thrown myself at this year

is Chaos - I resurrected the Wylde Hunt, my
monochrome, all-mounted Slaves to Darkness,
- and got into Chaos Dwarves again, with a
hobgrot-heavy army mixing 3D printing and
the new Kruleboyz releases.

Recently I’ve been incredibly blessed - various

members of the community banded together
this year to get my old Craftworld Eldar army
back on its feet. I’d sold it back in 2019 to raise
money for medical treatment (basically kicking
off my transition) and always regretted the
necessity of it. I’m now sitting on a wonderful
pile of donated miniatures, with new releases
to come - it’s a very exciting time and I’m very
lucky!

Anyway, that’s me - Cat Lawrie, Kitbashcat.

Hoping for 2022 to be a much better one. I’m
back in work now, so whether I’ll have the
time or not to create as much as last year, who
knows, but one can hope!

LORNA WELCH

My name is Lorna, also known as “Gobbo

Girl”. Like many, I started painting during the
pandemic, but was introduced to the hobby
world prior through my partner. From a young
age, I was always interested in 80’s fantasy
and horror movies. My mother had previously
worked in Steve Jackson’s art gallery “Abandon
Art” and all of this paved the way for a lot of
my miniature inspirations, such as “Freddy
Squigstealer” and “Squig-IT”.

My main army is Orks and I have amassed a

lot of the Rogue Trader miniatures, as I love
the characterful sculpts of that era. Lately I’ve
been drawn to the game and have intentions
to start playing.

Outside of the hobby, I enjoy reading and

writing and my crowning achievement has
been finishing and releasing my book Dead Girls
Don’t Cry.

I’m Dafné, aka Mrs Dramatic Chicpunk,

almost 30 years old, PhD in biology, collagen
biochemistry specialised, engaged to Mr
Chicpunk, mother of baby Chicpunk and a fluffy
dumb cat.

I remember when, as a teenager, I used to

walk past a Warhammer store, watching the
amazing miniatures through the shop window
wondering “what the hell was that?” and never
finding the strength to push open the door,
since I’d been told many times that it was boys
only.

Many years later, my partner tried to get me

into the hobby, first with Games Workshop
games such as Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 40K
or Kill Team and I didn’t really fall into it... That is
until the mighty day we played Privateer Press’
game Warmachine and Hordes! I enjoyed
it so much that I wanted to paint my own
miniatures to play with! I fell in love with the
Crucible Guard army and started to paint them
to fit a dedicated and personal lore I created:
the Alchemists of the Order of the Copper
Crucible. Interestingly, the alchemical symbol
of copper is what is commonly used as the
female symbol. My partner and I even started
a YouTube channel dedicated to battle reports
during lockdown.

Showing my art on social media started as a

way of showcasing my armies and following
my improvement as a miniatures painter, and
ended up as an amazing way to get in touch
with other artists, get relevant feedback, as
well as inspiration and motivation! Having met
so many deeply inspiring women and men, I
now know that this hobby is not just a place for
men. It is fine to share my art, as well as my
feelings, show my strengths and weaknesses
- because in the end, we’re all human beings
playing with little soldiers and living on the
same messy earth.

When I got back into this hobby in late 2019, I

never thought it would take me to the places
it has today. When a friend asked me if I had
ever heard of Warhammer, I remembered the
long forgotten case, full of half-broken Chaos
models “painted” with unthinned paint, that
sat gathering dust at the back of a cupboard
for years. I dug it out and got to work on the
models, getting them ready for a rough first
game at Bad Moon Café in London.

I sat down and took some time to research

colour schemes and how to actually paint.
I went with a black and purple Emperor’s
Children scheme and fell in love with painting.
The act of working on something physical and
producing results that you could not only show
off to friends, but then use to play a game was
the most satisfying thing ever.

Over the next two years, I painted almost 01

constantly and started collecting Necrons. I
was obsessed with always getting more done
and doing it better than before, and I still am.
When I took a leap and applied for a trainee
position at Siege Studios in May of 2021, I
was amazed when they offered me a job as a
freelance artist instead. Then I was even more
amazed when they asked me to join the in-
office painting team later that year. Being with
Siege Studios has taught me so much in such
a short time and has pushed me further than I
thought possible.

This hobby has given me so much: an incredible

job, new friends and I even met my partner at
a Warhammer tournament. I just hope I can
give as much back to the awesome community
around Warhammer and miniature painting. 02 03

Back in 2018, I saw some gameplay footage of

the video game Vermintide 2 on YouTube and
was really intrigued by the setting. Warhammer
had always been on the periphery for me.
I’d enjoyed D&D, tabletop and video gaming
for many years, but had never had a proper
introduction to wargaming. Within a couple of
weeks, I walked into my local gaming store and
the wonderful folks there introduced me to the
hobby, starting me on this wild journey.

My first love in the hobby was Tzeentch, with

my primary focus on creating large centrepiece
models that told a story. I wanted them to
evoke the brilliant shifting colours of the
Crystal Labyrinth and the madness and chaos
of the Warp. Batch painting armies wasn’t for
me, and although I played a fair amount of
games, painting was my preference. I flitted
from faction to faction, painting Nighthaunts
and Sylvaneth, dabbling in 40K with Knights
and Adeptus Mechanicus, sometimes straying
into other standalone miniatures to refresh my
palette.

I was pregnant and stuck at home in 2020

and kitbashed a Tzeentch-tainted Chaos
Knight using leftovers from my Daemon army.
After my son was born, new motherhood
took over my life, but within the last several
months, I’ve come back to the hobby with
renewed vigour. I’ve come to realise I prefer
skirmish-scale gaming, and got into Middle-
earth Strategy Battle Game (MESBG) Battle
Companies and more recently into Blood Bowl
and Necromunda. I started exploring darker
and grittier colour palettes and am trying to get
comfortable doing more kitbashes. Currently
I’m working on an Escher Gang and have
even started writing my own lore, something
I’d never have imagined doing back in the
beginning. There are so many amazing ways
to enjoy this hobby and I’m excited to continue
learning and growing in it.
