Diffraction 26012021

The document discusses 9 problems related to diffraction gratings and Fraunhofer diffraction. The problems involve calculating angles of diffraction, positions of maxima and minima, slit widths, and dispersions based on information about the wavelengths of light, grating parameters like number of lines and spacing, and distances between optical elements. The answers to each problem are provided.

1 Find the half angular width of the central bright maximum in the Fraunhofer diffraction
pattern of a slit of width 12×10-5 cm when the slit is illuminated by monochromatic light
of wavelength 6000Å. [Ans – 30o]

2 Light is incident normally on a grating 0.5 cm wide with 2500 lines. Find the angles of
diffraction for the principal maxima of the two sodium lines of wavelengths λ1= 5890Å
and λ2= 5896Å in the first order spectrum. [Ans – 17.1o& 17.2o]

3 In Fraunhofer diffraction due to a narrow slit a screen is placed 2 m away from the lens to
obtain the pattern. If the slit width is 0.2 mm and the first minima lie 5 mm on either side
of the central maximum, find the wavelength of light. [Ans – 5000 Å]

4 Light of wavelength 6000 Å is incident on a slit of width 0.30 mm. The screen is placed 2
m from the slit. Find {a} the position of the first dark fringe, and {b} the width of the
central bright fringe. [Ans – {a} ± 4×10-3m, {b} 8mm]

5 A slit of width a is illuminated by white light. For what value of a does the first minimum
for red light [λ = 650 nm] fall at θ = 15o? What is the wave length λ’ of the light whose
first diffraction maximum [not counting the central maximum] falls at 15o, thus
coinciding with the first minimum for red light? [Ans: 2.51 µm, 430 nm]

6 Monochromatic light of wavelength 441 nm falls on a narrow slit. On a screen 2.16 m

away, the distance between the second minimum and the central maximum is 1.62 cm.
Calculate (a) the width of the slit and (b) the angle of diffraction of the second minimum.
[Ans – (a) 118 µm, (b) 0.430o]

7 A certain grating has 104 slits with a spacing of d = 2.1 µm. It is illuminated with yellow
sodium light (λ = 589 nm). Find the angular position of all principal maximum
observed.[Ans: 16.3o, 34.1o, 57.3o.]

8 A diffraction grating has 104 rulings uniformly spaced over 25 mm. It is illuminated at
normal incidence by yellow light from a sodium vapor lamp. This light contains two
closely spaced lines of wavelengths 589.00 and 589.59 nm. (a) At what angle will the
first–order maximum occur for the first of these wavelengths? (b) What is the angular
separation between the first-order maxima for these lines? [Ans : (a) 13.6o, (b) 0.014o]

9 A grating has 9600 lines uniformly spaced over a width 3 cm and is illuminated by light
from a mercury vapor discharge. What is the expected dispersion, in the third order, in
the vicinity of the intense green line (λ=546 nm)? [Ans: 31.6o]
