PRESENTATION OF THE MODULE

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays an important role in

shaping the global society in the past up to the present times. Since we live in the
“information age,” information technology has become a part of our everyday lives,
which is a great impact on our society. In the past decades, many social concerns
have been addressed through ICT and made big social changes that benefited the
people of the nation.

In this module, you will learn about how ICT helped address previous known
Philippine social issues and what ICT platforms were used. You better read the module
religiously.

ABSTRACTION

The Role of ICT in Recent History

Throughout recent history, the Philippines has been one of a few nations that
demonstrates unity for a call to action or social change. These campaigns for social
change would not been successful if were not for ICT.

1. EDSA (People Power Revolution)

Figure 1. Hundreds of thousands of people filling up Epifanio delos Santos Avenue

(EDSA), facing northbound towards the Boni Serrano Avenue-EDSA intersection.
(February 1986)
Source: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3b/EDSA_Revolution_pic1.jpg

From 1983 to 1986, the People Power Revolution lasted. Cardinal Sin urged
Filipinos to help end the regime of President Ferdinand Marcos throughout a Radio
Veritas radio show. From 22 to 25 February 1986, a massive protest took place
alongside the EDSA involving two million Filipinos from various sectors. Civilians,
political parties, military and religious groups were among those involved. The
broadcast on the radio helped to alter the direction of history. Filipinos would not have
been forced into action without it.

2. EDSA Dos

Figure 2. 2001 EDSA Dos

Source: https://moonmon1310.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/dos.jpg

Also known as the 2001 EDSA Revolution, Edsa Dos occurred from January
17 to 21, 2001. It was fueled after 11 of then President Joseph Estrada's lawyers
walked out of the impeachment proceedings. As a result, over the course of a few
days, via text brigades, the crowd in EDSA grew. As with the first People Power
Revolution, without text brigades, EDSA Dos would not have been successful.

3. Million People March

Figure 3. Million People March

This is a series of protests that took place from August 22 to 26, 2013, primarily
in Luneta Park. There were also some demonstrations that took place around key
cities in the Philippines and some overseas locations. It was to denounce the abuse
of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF). While branded as the Million
People March, the total number of attendees was only about 400,000. Nevertheless,
it was still viewed as a success and showed clearly how effective social media
campaigns are. Facebook and change.org were used by the organizers and
supporters of the Million People March.

Recent storms in Philippine history gave birth to the People finder database
powered by Google. During typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), the People Finder was a vital
tool for people across the globe to track the situation of their relatives. This proved to
be successful and is now adapted by more organizations to help people track relatives
during calamities.

Change.org

Change.org is referred to as the "world’s platform for social change" where

anyone from the online community can produce a petition and ask others to sign it. In
the past, petitions are only made by signing paper, typically done by a group asking
for signatures through travel. By encouraging the online community to affix their digital
signatures to a petition, Change.org provides access to more individuals.

Its goal is to help build the change they want to see from around the globe.
Change.org has hosted many petitions for years to help address the following issues:
economic problem, criminal injustice, human rights violations, lack of education,
environmental issues, animal abuse, human health issues, and world hunger.
