What a super turnout!

What a super turnout for the Christmas in July in August session at the Leinster! Delightful to see the return to Australia of Anton and the presence of some Jammers from long ago, welcome back all. The music was ripping along at a pace, the nibblies went down well with the drinks, Becky's Christmas cake went off well with coffee, and the kids knew what to do with the balloons.... A fabulous day, a wonderful way to slide out of the winter doldrums and lots of fun, and many thanks to all the musos and vocalists making it come together so well. Marg

The Leinster Christmas in August. Well that was a silly idea . . . kind of fun, but
I recommend Ashley's Book of Knots: it is the seminal work on ropework for sailors. It purports to carry every knot ever invented, or a variation thereof. Close perusal, whilst rewarding, will reveal however, that it fails to mention the Embraceable You tangle, of the labyrinthine version of the Blue in Green Hitch. Both were amply demonstrated at the Dementia Arms Hotel on Sunday: Also mentioned in dispatches: Elm, a Louis fave, for occupying my addled brain for the next four hours, Is You Is or Is you Ain't for having 2

a chart that appeared to be written in two keys, in fact, the afternoon was a joyous cockup from start to finish, with all sorts of musos casting a full toolkit of spanners into the works. Fantastic! In amongst the balloons, the dips, the vacuous gossip, the lunatic soup and the greeting of old friends, were, bizarrely in the circumstances, some musical gems, and some performances which reached the modest heights of pretty damn good. Props to POCKOTL, who had the silly idea in the first place, to Bec for the cake, to Maria who insisted on everyone wearing a suitably Yuletide hat, to Anton for emigrating from Indonesia after two and a half years , to Alan for having the good sense to spend the afternoon chatting up nurses in RMH, and to everyone else in the front bar and back yard who had the good sense to shut the doors, turn up the TV and have a good time anyway.

Now, the music and some entirely random observations:

Rob "Inky Fingers" McCue kicked off with some fine piano before re-assigning himself to the Photography Department of the Melbourne JazzJammers Newsletter, Brian, faced with one of the aforementioned charts, played a great solo anyway. Keef was as good as they come on clarinet, although he had to elbow the Karutz out of the way (nicely of course), Captain Chaos kept the whole plot moving along, and managed to get most people up for a rattle twang tickle or blow. Elliot played the smallest guitar, Jack the Lad turned up doing his Jack Nicholson Chinatown impersonation, and later trommed some great 'bone. Sam the Ham got his organ pumping. Marion really struggled with a couple of dud charts (Unembraceable?), but came good on the good ones. David got the rhythm section rocking. Jan lit the place up with a couple of great songs, later followed by Ann Hayres (Loverman Where Can You Be? ) showing the entirely agreeable effects of having a few more gigs under her belt. Maria swung the proverbials off If I Were a Bell. Paul and Paul, Taariq and Jeremy played bass, thereby freeing up Frank The Indefatigable to concentrate on the dips, although he came good with some nice guitar work later on, David Ruiz decided to leave his run until after I had left (he was fantastic, of course), Ceau Lin played some brief and elegant keys before leaving for China again (come back, they was real good!), someone whose name I can't remember sang a couple of difficult songs brilliantly, and either the lunatic soup had kicked or were there really three percussionists and a shaker going at one stage? If I haven't mentioned your name, that is because you are young, talented and good looking and the rest of us are jealous. I think we just broke the record for most musos at a Leinster session. Or not as the case may be. Don't all turn up next week, it would be chaos. Actually it will probably be chaos anyway. So you might as well turn up after all. See ya at the jam? TW

Anne singing some impressive numbers and some cool backing by an A little quiet but those that came enjoyed accomplished rhythm section the music themselves. was at a very high standard for very low cost. Hope to catch you next week Ted (keys), Frank (guitar and bass) Anne CG (vocals and drums) and myself kicked off the proceedings. We were joined by Kay (vocals) PS: Sunday was a hoot. Jan Blake, Anne Ivan (bass) and Maurizio (guitar). Jeremy Hayres and Jenna provided great vocals and his real bass joined a little later along along with regulars Debbie and Maria. with Sagigo (the cool guy from Japan) on Maria performed a great version of If I guitar. As usual Glen did a few numbers on were a Bell. Great to see Paul and then the drums. Paul, who said the previous Jeremy on bass. David and Peter on week that he wasn't coming, came in on percussion and everybody else who made trombone towards the end. (I think Louis great music. Louis was definitely there at came as well . . . having a senior moment this session (I think . . . ). here). With Kaye and CG
