Course: ________________________
Subject Code: GEC 4 Description: MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD
Semester: ______ School Year: ______ Period: ___________
Introduction
This module introduces to some of the special language that is a foundation for mathematical
thought, the language of variables, language and symbols.
Rationale
COURSE MODULE
The students will watch video on the mathematical language and symbols thru this links given below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BouqkWYlfzg

WEEK 2
Topic 1 Variables
A variable is a symbol that acts as a placeholder for expressions or quantities that can modify or
change; it's commonly used to represent a function's argument or an arbitrary element of a set.

WEEK 2
EXAMPLE 1 Writing Sentences Using Variables
Rewrite the following sentences using variables to make them more formal.
a. Is there a set of integers where the sum of their squares equals the square of their sum?
b. The square of any real number is nonnegative.
Topic 4 Existential Universal Statements
Solution:
a. Are there x and y with the property that x2 + y2 = (x + y)2 ?
or: Are there numbers a and b such that x2 + y2 = (x + y)2 ?
or: Do there exist any numbers a and b such that x2 + y2 = (x + y)2 ?

have the same property.
Mathematical Statements
(Illus. 1: Any negative real number less than zero is a negative real number.)
A conditional statement states that if one thing is true, then another must be true as well.
Topic 3 Universal Existential Statements
(Illus. 2: If 16 is divisible by 4, then 16 is divisible by 2.)
Universal statements have some variation of the words "for all" while conditional statements
contain a variant of the word "if-then".
A universal conditional statement is one that is universal and conditional at the same time.
The statement can be written in a way that makes its conditional nature explicit but its universal
nature implicit.
Topic
If b 5
is a cat, then b is a mammal. The Mathematical Language
or: If an animal is a cat, then the animal is a mammal.
or: For all cats b, b is a mammal.
or: All cats are mammals.
Assessment
COURSE MODULE
Direction: Please write your answers on a yellow paper. Take photos and upload your
output in ________________. Deadline on _____________.
1. Rewrite the following sentences using variables to make them more formal.
a. Are there numbers whose square are smaller than the numbers themselves?
b. A prime number is an integer greater than 1 and whose only positive divisors are 1 and itself.
For all real number a, if a is greater than 4, then a2 is greater than 16.
