Assignment 2 Cosmos College

This document contains 8 questions related to surveying, geometry, time zone conversions, and field astronomy. Question 2 asks to determine the coordinates of a resection point given coordinates of 3 other points and angle measurements between them. Question 3 asks to calculate curve setting out data given parameters of two roads meeting at a 45 degree angle to be joined by a 200m radius curve. Question 6 asks to calculate time and date in Argentina given departure time from Kathmandu factoring in the time zone difference between the two locations.

Assignment 2

1. Describe about orientation in surveying. Explain the analytical resection by Collin’s

Method.
2. Stations A, B and C have the following respective coordinates (2876.24 mE, 8754.11 mN),
(3810.80 mE, 7997.25 mN) and (2959.39 mE, 7487.09 mN) respectively. Station O was
established and following observations were recorded by a theodolite:
Pointing towards Horizontal circle readings
A 90°00′ 00′′
B 230°58′ 51′′
C 313°17′ 05′′
A 90°00′ 30′′
Determine the coordinates of resection point O.
3. Two roads meets at a deviation angle of 45° at an apex point I are to be joined by 200m
radius curve. If the chainage of the apex point is 1+850 m. calculate the necessary data for
setting out a curve by: a) offset from the long chord at 10 m interval. b) Method of bisection
to get every 16th point on the curve. c) Radial and perpendicular offset from every full
station of 25 m along tangent. d) Offset from the chord produced.
4. A −1.0% grade meets a +2.0% grade at a station C whose chainage is 3550 m and elevation
is 2555.555 m. A vertical curve of length 100 m is required to be introduced with pegs at
10 m intervals. Calculate the elevations of the points on the curve by a) Tangent
corrections. b) Chord gradients.
5. The angle of intersection between two straights is 140°. The spiral angle for each transition
curve is 5°. If the radius of the main curve is 400 m, calculate the length of the transition
curve and the length of the circular curve.
6. Mr. Sanyr was flying to Argentina from Kathmandu to continue his MBBS studies there.
His flight left from Kathmandu on 1st Jan 2022, Saturday at 11:00 AM. Now his flight
took exactly 10 hrs. 45 minutes 20 seconds to reach Argentina from Kathmandu. Provided
that the longitudes of Kathmandu & Argentina are as follows:

Location Latitude Longitude

Kathmandu 27°41′ 51′′ 𝑁 85°21′ 37′′ 𝐸
Argentina 37°28′ 41′′ 𝑆 58°32′ 09′′ 𝑊
Find:

a) Find shortest distance between Kathmandu and Argentina with neat sketches.
b) What date & time is it in Argentina when the flight just starts from Kathmandu?
c) What will be the date & time when Mr. Sanyr will reaches Argentina?
7. Given that the GMT on 29th May, 1997 Wednesday of California is 23 hrs. 59 minutes 59
seconds. Find LMT of the following places (also date and day).
a) 25°29′ 10′′ 𝐸
b) 25°29′10′′ 𝑊
8. Define some terminologies related with field astronomy with figure.
a) Longitude and Latitude
b) Great Circle
c) Celestial sphere
d) Horizon
e) Spherical Triangle
