Welcome to the subject Discipline and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences Grade
11, Self-Learning Module on Functions of Applied Social Sciences!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by


educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-in-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin, in partnership with
the City Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The
writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process
the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.

Do remember that right tools and methods in communication go with the right
settings and processes. When we communicate to someone let us consider the place or
setting rightful to what message or information we want to deliver. What information we
will say, how we transmit that information and to what setting should we say that
information or message need to be considered when we are doing communication.

Overview

The social sciences refer to the various disciplines that study society and examine
how people interact and develop culture. It is a big umbrella of disciplines that include
history, political science, sociology, psychology, economics, geography, demography,
anthropology, and others. On The other hand, applied social science was developed as a
response to the categorization of the social science knowledge that was common during
the late 90s and end of the twentieth century. Students who pursue courses on the applied
social sciences give them adequate background and training to have careers in counselling,
social work and communication.

A. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to Self-Development

1. Counseling – offers guidance to individuals in various situations of conflict, confusion,


and crisis and provides the tools for the individual to address issues of self-development.

2. Social Work – offers a wide range of services, particularly in aid of liberating the
marginalized individuals and facilitating participation in the public goods and services
that are necessary for self-development.

3. Communication – empowers the individual with listening and speaking skills in order
for them to be effective. The individual has to be sure that the message comes across
accurately by considering the message itself, the audience or receiver, and how the
message is likely to be received.

Process of Self-development

Improving oneself doesn’t happen overnight. Successful personal development is


dependent on targets, such as one’s goals and strategies.

Becoming successful in life requires one’s ability to take charge of his or her
personal development. Fiske (2014) suggested that the development of oneself also
encourages social belongingness, which consequently leads to positive feelings and fosters
healthy and lasting relationships. Thus, self-development – being a process of
continuously improving one’s skills, refining one’s craft, and enhancing one’s personal
qualities – is essential to becoming an effective and productive member of society.

Step 1: Creating a vision of yourself

The first step in the process of self-development invites you to create a mental image
of what you envision about yourself. This vision will not only allow you to pursue your life
goals, but it will also help you anticipate the possible obstacles which you could encounter
along the way. This process will also help you create a focus on how you wish to reach you
goals. Some of the questions worth reflecting about this step are the following: How do I
see myself four to five years from now? What do I really want to achieve in my life? What
kind of person do I want to be?

Step 2: Setting specific goals

This process invites you to set particular targets that are gear toward improving
yourself. It may include the goals in your career, your relationship with others, your
education, or even your physical well-being. This process allows you to allocate time and
energy more efficiency, thus promoting better productivity and greater confidence. You
must be able to have SMART goals. First, your goal must be Specific or has an exact or
definite target (e.g., having an academic recognition by the end of the school year). Second,
your goal must be Measurable or quantifiable so that you could have exact target for your
objective (e.g., having at least an average grade of 90 by the end of this semester). Third,
your goal must be Achievable and Realistic (e.g., becoming a member of an interest
organization in school). Finally, your goal should be Time bound, or that which could follow
a time frame (e.g., accomplishing half of the entire research paper by a specific date).

Step 3: Identifying action plans

This process invites you to identify specific strategies that will help you achieve your
goals. If, for example, your goal is to get a final grade of 95 by the end of this semester,
some of your action plan could include the following:
1. Strictly following daily schedules
2. Preparing a “to do list” for the day and for the week
3. Avoiding unnecessary absences from class
4. Doing advance research and advance reading of lessons
5. Reviewing notes on a daily basis, even without examinations or quizzes
6. Actively participating in class discussions
7. Submitting quality projects on time

Step 4: Evaluating outcomes

The last step invites you to assess your plans and your achievements throughout
the process of improving yourself. It allows you to verify the result of your hard work and
the effectiveness of your plans. Assessment of your personal development is attained
through reflective activities or through consultation with your trusted someone (parents,
friends or school counselor).

B. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to Persuasion

In careers related to communication like mass media, advertising, and business,


persuasion is very essential. To persuade means: Being able to convince other people to
change their attitudes or behavior regarding an issue through the communication of
messages in an atmosphere of free choice.

One cannot persuade a person unless he/she has a foundation on social sciences.
It is very important that those who make the messages or advertisements that want to
persuade a client or customer must be knowledgeable about the culture of the people in
which the messages are being communicated. The heart of persuasion is the ability to
understand well one’s audience and its complexity. Persuasion energizes itself to move
audiences to desired and immediate action.

C. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to Arts and Entertainment

Applied social sciences are also used in the arts and entertainment industry. Arts
and entertainment are reflections of a country’s culture and society. To be able to
understand and analyze the development and new trends in the arts and entertainment,
it is important to be familiar about the people’s social and cultural conditions.

As new forms and delivery systems for entertainment flourished, there is great
importance to understand the needs of the viewing public. It is important to cope with the
changing demands of the viewers in order to get the viewer’s attention. The applied social
sciences prove to be significant in this aspect because a strong foundation in the study of
the people’s viewing behavior and patterns are emphasized in this field.

D. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to News and Information

Applied social science is also important in the field of journalism. The news and
current affairs sector emphasize the need for a balanced, objective, and truthful rendering
of the political and other important events as they actually happened. Practitioners in the
applied social sciences have enough training in this regard because they have a good
foundation in history and political science. Through the application of these fields, applied
social scientist have enough skills to be able to write and report news accurately and
objectively.

E. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to Organizing Advocacy and Mobilization

Advocacy groups are organized to inform and educate on public issues, and
influence people on the development of policies. Advocacy groups also play important roles
in the development of political and social systems. Applied social sciences is a good
background for advocacy and mobilization because this field studies politics, governance,
social and political dynamics which are very important background for advocacy works.

The following are some of the different activities of advocacy. All these activities
require knowledge of the applied social sciences. It includes the following:

1. Community organizing and mobilization – It is about helping to mobilize


constituents and build power with their communities.
2. Information dissemination – Providing communities and people the right
information on important political, social and economic issues affecting them.
3. Research – Conducting research that reflects the needs of the communities.
4. Training – Training sessions that will teach successful strategies and skills for
personal and community development.

F. Functions of Applied Social Sciences to Education

The academe is one of the most relevant career tracks that applied social scientists
can pursue. The multidisciplinary approach in the study of the applied social sciences can
equip students with the skills and expertise to work in schools, colleges, and universities.
These are a significant number of subjects offered in the general education curriculum in
the secondary and tertiary levels that applied social scientists can teach. These include
history, society and culture, and politics and government.

confronting the many challenges that the future holds in the store, humankind sees
education as an indispensable asset in its attempt to attain the ideal peace, freedom, and
social justice. As it concludes its work, the commission affirms its belief that education
has a fundamental role to play in personal and social development.”

The four pillars of Education according to UNESCO; Education throughout life is


based on four pillars: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and
learning to be:

1. Learning to know, combines a sufficiently broad general knowledge with the


opportunity to work in depth on a small number of subjects. This also means
learning to learn so as to benefit from the opportunities education provides
throughout life.
2. Learning to do, acquires not only an occupational skill but also, more broadly, the
competence to deal with many situations and work in teams. It also means learning
to do in the context of young peoples' various social and work experiences which
may be informal, as a result of the local or national context, or formal, involving
courses, alternating study and work.
3. Learning to live together, develops an understanding of other people and an
appreciation of interdependence - carrying out joint projects and learning to manage
conflicts -in a spirit of respect for the values of pluralism, mutual understanding
and peace.
4. Learning to be, develop one's personality be able to act with ever greater autonomy,
judgement and personal responsibility. In that connection, education must not
disregard any aspect of a person's potential: memory, reasoning, aesthetic sense,
physical capacities and communication skills.

VALUING

Applied social sciences offers a wide range of practitioners in their field of expertise
in different areas such as advocacy, counseling and case management to be able to work
with the clienteles of social work to improve their well-being and social functioning. They
can also fit well in all other sectors requiring the application of psychological knowledge,
including the human resource offices, market research, community services, health and
social welfare.

With the applied social sciences processes, standards in social service delivery are
observed. A set of core values is considered in the delivery of human and social services.
Services are given with quality. Social justice is pursued. Every person is considered to
have dignity and worth. The importance of human relationships is a factor in social service
delivery. Integrity and competence are expected of all professionals in the practice of social
service. People in need are helped by social workers to address social problems. Social
injustice is challenged.
