1. SCOPE
This document covers the method statement of Earth Works for Casting Building Expansion Project
at Smelting Gresik. Scope of earthworks shall be:

- General work (survey, preparation etc)

- Land clearing (if necessary)

- Demolition existing facility

- Excavation and back filling

- Soil cutting

- Embankment

- Temporary shoring

- De-watering

- Quality Control

- Temporary Access

- Temporary drainage and pit

- Test pit ( If required )

- CBR Test

2. AREA OF WORK
Earth work area will cover as follows:
- New plant casting building 2
- New Plan Cooling pit

3. PURPOSE
This procedure describe about method and sequence of Soil Excavation, Backfill & Compaction, Soil
transportation to temporary stock pile, Shoring protection with refer to specification and safety
regulation

9. SCHEDULE

10. WORK METHOD DESCRIPTION


10.1 General Description

Earthworks are, Structures formed by the excavating, raising or sloping of ground, e.g.;
embankments, cuttings or remediated natural slopes. Civil engineering process that includes
extraction, loading, transport, transformation/improvement, placement and compaction of
natural materials (soils, rocks), and/or secondary or recycled materials, in order to obtain stable
and durable cuttings, embankments or engineered fills. At this project all building will do
earthwork for foundation (Container Yard work shop, office building, etc.)

10.2 Safety and Environment


- Pre-job meeting with the company is required prior to start the work.
- Work permit shall be applied in daily basis.
- Job Safety Analysis should be prepare and submited to client for review and approval
- PPE shall be used for all personnel working in the area.
- Tool box shall be held daily and conducted by safety man and site supervisor in charge.
10.3 Land Clearing (if Required)
Land clearing included following activities:

- Stripping, including the taking down or grubbing up of surface obstruction such us


debris, rubble, gates, fences, hedges, tress, etc.
- Rerouting existing ditches and water courses
- Treatment of underground cavities (if any)
- Provision of site drainage
- Provision of temporary access

- Lay down and stockpiles area

10.4 Excavation and Back-filling Sequence


a. Surveying work
Survey work shall be conducted to marking/state out the position of excavation and
boundary area.
b. Do joint inspection to determine of existing facility that embedded at area excavation.
Coordination with company representative should be intent to verify this activity.
c. Excavation shall be conducted using excavator. After area to be excavated marked
d. Soil from excavation shall be temporary disposed in one side are (if possible), unused soil
and materials shall be disposed directly to designated area approved by Company
e. Temporary disposed material shall not be to close with the trench area to avoid slope
failure or collapse during construction
f. Slope of excavation shall be maintain min 1V : 1,5H. The recommendation of slope ratio
shall be based on Geotechnical Survey that given by COMPANY
g. For special deep excavation case that mide than 1,5 meter from top of soil, contractor will
use steel sheet pile as shoring protection system. Requirement shoring protection will be
calculated by Civil engineer and submit to COMPANY for Appoval
h. Despite slope has been formed in accordance with the recommendation, Contractor liable
to monitor the stability of slope and convincing that slope will not failed. Repair and
adjustment of slope shall be done while slope indicate unstable.
i. Base mat will applied to support excavation ativity in soft surface layer. Base mat can use
steel plate, wooden or bamboo woven.

10.5 Shallow Excavation with 0-1.5 meter depth


Shallow excavation will execute by manual digging by hand tool. Manual digging will
performed by helper and supervise by foreman at field area. Before starting manual digging,
please ensure all area has been checked by company representative and clearly from
underground existing facility. If during excavation fined the hard layer material, jack hammer
will applied to broke the hard layer.

10.6 Excavation More Than 1.5 M depth
As HSE Regulation, all excavation that more than 1.5 meter depth will categorize into confined
space work and must be more attention. Inspection gas trap shall applied every time to ensure
area of excavation clear from gas trap such as H2S, methane, CO2, etc. Inspection air condition
will controlling by Gas detector that checked by safety man at working area. In confined space
excavation, preparation work should be equipped with several document as follows:

a. Special work permit for confined space excavation


b. Engineering Calculation for shoring protection ( Sheet pile )
c. Procedure installation shoring protection ( sheet pile )
d. As built drawing from previous project for reference inspection existing facility before
starting the work
e. Method statement and sequence of work
f. Emergency respond plan procedure if something heaven during deep excavation

In according to work, contractor shall provide:


a. Safety stand by and Supervisor
b. ERP Team
c. Emergency access shall provide to site ( in and out)
d. Hard barricade from steel pipe or wooden
e. Safety sign
f. Submersible pump for. This pump will be turn on at 24 hour if necessary.
For excavation more than 1.5 meter please see figure 1.

10.7 Temporary Shoring Protection

In case natural slope cannot be applied to excavation of foundation, the temporary shoring shall
be applied to avoid slope failure. Shoring protection will use steel sheet pile and strut structure
or wooden. Some cover protection (plastic, tarpaulin, etc) also will be applied (if required) to
avoid slope erosion during construction. Temporary shoring protection shall be designed and
calculated by competence engineer and attach in work method statement that issued to company
for approval.

The installation of temporary support protectors (Sheet piles) must follow the following:
a. Survey and marking
The determination of line shoring protection that will be installed and stack out.
b. The lifting crane must be selected, based on the weight of the sheet pile material to be
lifted. Ensure maximum lifting capacity for sheet pile material is still in covered by service
crane load capacity.
c. Access and work area must be good and wide enough for this type of work including
swing operation.
d. Appointment supervisors should be assigned to the operation. Riggers, signalman and
others must be properly regulated. They should be clearly instructed for the operation.
e. The roughter crane must be parked at a predetermined position. The area for laying the
piles should be selected at an early stage.
f. Ensure the crane and lifting devise has inspected by certified competence persone before
to use.
g. All lifting operations must be supervised by the lifting supervisor.
h. After the sheet pile has been loaded into the HSPD chuck with a crane and pushed at least
3/4 length of the sheet pile into the ground, the HSPD operator will confirm and make
sure everything is in order before giving instructions to the trigger person to release the
shackles. Shackles must be reachable with a man's height.
i. After positioning and verticallity has been checked the reaction stands vertically in the
proposed alignment, 1 sheet of initial pile shall be installed and pressed using the HSPD
pile machine to the required depth. Often in the form of sheet piles are used to provide
the initial reaction force.
j. The pile starts from a reaction stand that simulates the top of the pile. Please see figure 2.

k. If required, the sheet piles should be joined by welding to achieve the required penetration
length. Hot work Permit will be applied if any jointing work for sheet pile
l. After the installation of the initial 1 pile is completed, the counterweight and reaction
stand must be removed.
m. Repeat for the next sheet pile installation until remaining sheet pile finished
n. Sheet pile will use W-type with sizing 0.4 m with and 9.0 m length. Please see figure 2.

o. However, before completing the pile driving, the stationary pile machine is removed from
the retaining pile. Please see figure 3.

p. Then the HSPD pile machine must complete the pile driving and the top of the machine
moves forward to allow the next pile to be installed. Please see figure 4.

q. The above procedure must be repeated to press the next pile to complete the pile wall.

10.8 Excavation at Stand Piling Area
In case excavation at stand piling area, contractor will provide wooden to cover group pile from
damage during excavation activity. Supervisor and safety man must be more attention for this
activity and ensure every step safe and not obstruct to pile material that has been driven.

10.9 Back Filling


When work at the excavation/ building already done and curing time of building already done then
applying concrete already finish. Next step is back fill it, and for back filling should by layer by
layer and at every layer will compacted. for backfill must flat with ground elevation.
Supervisor and quality shall monitoring in each step back filling work, and ensure all activity as
follows:
 Back filling can be performed only after the area of back filling have been cleaned from
forms, timber, trash, debris etc.
 Prior to back filling all underground structures and facilities must be checked and ensure
that all has been as per specification requirements and will not cause problems arising later
on.
 Back filling shall be performed layer by layer (100 – 300 mm) in specified thickness
according to the Engineering specification.
 Compaction will be execute by compactor (Vibro roller or Hand compactor) as per field
requirement.
 The fill materials to raise the finished grade level shall be suitable excavated material free
from debris, vegetation etc.
 During filling work, the temporary drainage must be provided to keep dry area from rain
fall. Its can be to increase quality of filling work.

10.10 Compaction
 As soon as the fill is placed and spread, every layer shall be compacted to the required
grade as per the specification.
 The optimum moisture content shall be determined in laboratory compaction test as refer
to AASHTO T 99

 Maximum thickness of layer and the minimum number of passes of the compaction
equipment shall be determined by field compaction test as determined by AASHTO T 191
or ASTM D 1556.
 Care shall be taken to ensure that the lower layers of fill are placed and compacted using
only that amount of compacted effort necessary to create a bridge over the weaker soils.
As the fill height increases the compacted efforts may be increased to attain the desired
density in the upper layer of fill.

10.11 De-watering

During excavation activity, improved area shall be maintained dry, and excessive water shall
be discharge to temporary pit. Temporary pit shall be made , and de-watering pump with
adequate suction capacity shall be used to de-water the trench. Ensure pumping unit that will
be used is relevant with estimating maximum water volume if rainfall is heaven during
excavation.

10.12 Soil Disposal

In order to soil disposal, contractor will propose soil disposal area to COMPANY for approval.
Soil disposal will propose out side from work site area and disptaching by dump truck. Ensure
dump truck has inspected by HSE departement and approve for used.

11. QUALITY CONTROL AND REPORTING


In regrard to inspection and controling, contractor will ensure some activity but not limted as
follows:
 All drawing and Procedure shall be Appoved by COMPANY
 The final lines, levels and slopes shall be inspected to ensure that the specified
requirements have been met.
 To ensure final levels Contractor shall use theodolite back sight to firm level guidance
(benchmark)
 All imported material shall be proposed prior to delivery on site for Company approval
 All material that tend to be re-used after excavated shall properly store in stockpile to
ensure the quality of material still good.
 All report shall be proposed by Contractor for Company quality control acceptance

12. SAFETY
Contractor will check all readiness and safety check list has been approved by COMPANY before
conducting excavation actovity. Some activity as follows:

 Ensure all the crew in fit to work


 Ensure all the equipment and tool has inspected and approved by COMPANY
representative
 Ensure all activity has cover by permit form and JOB Safety Analysis. And contractor will
doing pre job safety meeting in each activity.
 Method statement or procedure shall be comply to design, safety regulation and
specification of the COMPANY. Contractor will submit all document procedure, permit
and job safety analysis min 2 days before execution of the work. In special case, contractor
will arrange special meeting to discuss about the method, strategy and safety concern with
COMPANY representative.
 Safety supervsior will check gas composition in the special deep excavation before
excavation conducted.
 Engineering and safety supervisor will check stability of shoring protection for deep
excavation before excavation conducted.
 During rainy condition all works shall be stop.
 Contractor will ensure drinking water is available in the field to eliminate hydration case
