• The landing gear is one of the most complicated system of the aircraft, comprising of structural
members, hydraulics, energy absorption components, brakes, wheels and tires.
• It is a unique sub system of an undercarriage in an aircraft which is actuated to land the airframe
without any damage.
• One of the critical parts of landing gear is oleo strut or shock strut. A type of hydro-pneumatic (oil
and air) component in an aircraft landing gear system that absorbs the landing shock.
• An attempt is made to conduct static structural, buckling and modal analysis by establishing design
data of an aircraft landing gear oleo strut and analyse it’s stress, deformation and fatigue life using
ANSYS 16.1.The computed results are validated for different materials.

RESEARCH GAP
• Over the past few years there has been an increase in undercarriage failure which has emphasized
the need to design undercarriage with longer fatigue lives
• 55% of aviation related failure occur during the take-off and landing phases
• During these phases landing gear are subjected to high impact and inertial loads and any failure at
the instant can be catastrophic
• The landing gear is a highly stressed structural part and fracture or cracking or loss of integrity of
the connection or attachment points can lead to serious consequences
• Mechanical failures occur due to excessive deflection, thermal shocks, impact loads, creep, buckling
load, corrosion, cracking and fatigue
RESEARCH GAP
• It is observed that significant amount of research work has been conducted in the area of
landing gear. It has been established that there is a need to overcome problems associated
with conflicting requirements such as strength, stability and stiffness of landing gear and at the
same time able to withstand the weight impact of the aircraft and avoid the structural damage
while landing
• Researchers have proposed suitable materials that are able to withstand the weight impact of
the aircraft
• But there is no research has been carried out regarding the analysis of oleo strut landing gear
using the following materials TIMETAL 834, 300M Steel, Al 7178
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Boundary condition is taken as ground reacting force 843.5 KN and mesh the design using
nodes 10722 and elements 5308
Perform static structural, modal, buckling analysis and fatigue analysis using ANSYS software
Find the total deformation, Equivalent stress, strain and factor of safety of the selected materials
of oleo strut landing gear
Results, comparison and discussion for selecting suitable material for oleo strut landing gear
Conclusion
1.DESIGN OF OLEO PNEUMATIC SHOCK ABSORBER
• Static structural analysis: The static structural analysis calculates the stresses, displacements, strains and
forces in structures caused by a load that does not induce significant inertia and damping effects
• Modal analysis: It is also called as eigenvalue analysis is a manner used to work out the vibration shapes and
take up with frequencies. It helps to find the natural frequency of the structure under cyclic load condition
• Buckling analysis: Buckling is a mode of failure of structural member when it is subjected to compressive
axial load. It causes lateral deformation which is unstable in nature.
• Fatigue analysis: Fatigue tests are performed to measure the reduction in stiffness and strength of
materials under repeated loading and to determine the total number of load cycles to failure.
