The ADM CPM Network early date calculations are done by doing the "forward pass." The
forward pass is accomplished through use of the following formula: EF=ES+DUR-1. The
forward pass is done for each one of the paths by carrying forward the largest values at the
junctions.
The ADM CPM Network late date calculations are done by doing a "backward pass." The
backward pass is accomplished by starting at the networks last activity and subtracting the
duration from the early finish date and adding one or LS=LF–DUR+1. As is done in the forward
pass calculation, this backward pass is done for each of the paths. The most critical time is always
carried backward for the calculation. Figure 2 shows a sample backward pass calculation.
The CPM Network float times are merely the difference between early and late dates. The
formula for calculating total float is as follows: TF=LF-EF or TF=LS-ES. By definition, the
Critical Path is the longest continuous path throughout the network, and, in a network with a
unique beginning and unique ending node and no outside constraints, it would be equivalent to
zero. Figure 3 shows an example of the total float calculation.
The activities and the calculated data must be arranged in an easy to use format. There are
various ways to sort or compile the calculated data. The normal horizontal format is as follows
for each activity:
The vertical or activity sort order can be in many ways dependent on the need. Listed below are a
few of the most useful sorts.
Following is a list of activities with the calculated values. The table on the next page depicts these
activities sorted by Early Start-Total Float.
