What I need to know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the nature of Understanding Culture Society and Politics. The scope of this module
permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used
recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow
the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using. Erasures in any forms
will not be allowed for this module. In this activity a Word Cloud will be presented.
What is a Word Cloud? Google says a word cloud is “an image composed
of words used in a particular text or subject, in which the size of each word indicates
its frequency or importance.” So, the more often a specific word appears in your text,
the bigger and bolder it appears in your word cloud.

In the next page you have to segregate what you think the word/s that best describe
the (NSI) Non State Institution, no repetition of word is allowed.

6|P age
Please bear in mind that those word/s had been discussed in your grade 10 class in
Contemporary Issues and some subjects in your first year in Senior High. It is just
somewhat playing a word game. What you need to do is a simple recall and identification
of this word.

“As we lose ourselves in the service of others, we discover our own lives and our own
happiness”.

What is It
NON-STATE INSTITUTIONS (NSI)
This are groups and organizations which operate outside the support of any state or
government. They are referred to be ‘stateless’ since they are considered to be independent
of any state, although, they usually collaborate with the government in implementing
projects. Non-state institutions assume different functions and focus on a specific
objective. In general, they develop certain services needed by members of the society for
their progress.

There are different non-state institutions that operate in society.

BANKS - as financial institutions licensed to provide several financial services to different

types of customers. Banks are in operation mainly for their deposit and lending function

 Universal Bank participate in many kinds of banking activities and is both

a commercial bank and an investment bank as well as providing other financial
services such as insurance.
 Commercial Banks have the powers to exercise all such powers to carry out
commercial banking such as accepting drafts and issuing letters of credit,
discounting and negotiating promissory notes, drafts, bills of exchange and other
evidences of debt.
 Thrift Banks - A thrift bank, also known as a savings and loan association, is a
form of a financial institution that provides basic banking services by offering a
variety of savings options and mortgage loan services and just like commercial
banks these too qualify as a depository institution and may even provide a range
of other products and services.
 Rural Banks - rural bank focuses on providing savings and credit services to
people who live in rural areas. Hopefully, the financial products offered respond to
the needs of its clients.
 Cooperative Bank - shall primarily provide financial, banking and credit services
cooperatives and their members, and to general public. It may also perform any or
all of the banking services offered by other types of banks subject to prior approval
of the BSP.

CORPORATION -is an organization, created by a group of people known as shareholders,

which is legally recognized to act as a single person in carrying out certain goals and
objectives. As a ‘legal person’, a corporation is mandated to enjoy the rights, privileges,
and responsibilities of an individual. Using its own name, a corporation has the right to
enter into contracts, to hire employees, and to loan and borrow money. It is also
authorized to have its own assets.

 Business corporation - is created to operate and to generate profit. Companies

like McDonald’s and Starbucks are examples of business corporations.

 Non-Profit Corporation - is established with a purpose of serving the public

rather than pursuing profits.

10 | P a g e
COOPERATIVES - Cooperatives are mainly structured to benefit its members and to
satisfy its members’ needs. In a cooperative, the people who use its products or services
are the same people who own and control the organization.

 Credit Cooperative - provides financial services to its members, including

securing savings and creating funds to be used for issuing loans.

 Multi-Purpose Cooperative - undertakes two or more functions of different

cooperatives. For example, multi-purpose cooperative could act as a consumer
cooperative and establish a supermarket. At the same time, it could also provide
financial services like a credit cooperative.

 Consumer and Producer Cooperative- operates mainly to obtain and distribute

products and commodities to its customers, both members and non-members and
aids those in the sector of production, either agricultural or industrial.

TRANSNATIONAL ADVOCACY ORGANIZATIONS (TAOs) - are defined as “self-

organized advocacy groups undertaking voluntary actions across state borders in
pursuit of what they deem the wider public interest.” Advocacy organizations are
known by different names: nonstate actors, NGOs, transnational advocacy networks,
such of foundation, medical mission, and rotary clubbing.

FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS - are a companies engaged in the business of dealing with

financial and monetary transactions such as deposits, loans, investments, and
currency exchange. MLuiller, Palawan Pawnshop, Cebuana Lhuiller, Lending Firms.

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION (intergovernmental organization) - is an

organization established by a treaty or other instrument governed by international law
and possessing its own international legal personality, such as the United Nations, the
WHO (World Health Organization) and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).
International organizations are composed of primarily Member states, but may also
include other entities, such as other international organizations.

Additionally, entities (including states) may hold observer status. Notable examples
include the United Nations (UN), Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe
(OSCE), Council of Europe (COE), International Labour Organization (ILO) and
International Police Organization (INTERPOL).

TRADE UNION (or a labor union in the U.S.) is an association of workers forming a
legal unit or legal personhood, usually called a "bargaining unit", which acts as
bargaining agent and legal representative for a unit of employees in all matters of law
or right arising from or in the administration of a collective agreement.

NON GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATIONS - which are independent of government

involvement are known as non-governmental organizations or NGOs or non-
government organizations. NGOs are a subgroup of organizations founded by citizens,
which include clubs and associations which provide services to its members and
others.

11 | P a g e
They are usually nonprofit organizations. Many NGOs are active in humanitarianism
or the social sciences. Surveys indicate that NGOs have a high degree of public trust,
which can make them a useful proxy for the concerns of society and stakeholders.
However, NGOs can also be lobby groups for corporations, such as the World
Economic Forum. According to NGO.org (the non-governmental organizations
associated with the United Nations), "[an NGO is] any non-profit, voluntary citizens'
group which is organized on a local, national or international level.

Task-oriented and driven by people with a common interest, NGOs perform a variety
of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to governments,
advocate and monitor policies and encourage political participation through provision
of information.

What’s more

ESSAY but not EASY : After deliberate reflection, write your thought on the following
questions.

Is it advantageous to the government if we allow the NSI to be part of the government as

Party list groups?

How these Non-State Institutions (NSI) contribute to Nation Building?

Will you allow a government official to manage or own a foundation?

What I can Do
Some NGOs are established to influence governments in specific ways on specific issues, and
they focus public attention on governments that violate their policies. In some countries,
nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are major contributors to development processes.
This is not uniform, however. In a number of countries, NGOs are weak or play more of an
oppositional rather than operational role and governments are highly suspicious of them. A
number of factors influence the development impact of NGOs; many of which are determined
by the relationship between the NGO sector and the Government. This should not be the
essence of NGO’s, rather it will complement the government in its advocacy and to uplift the
living and protection of its citizenry.

IDENTIFICATION: Name one NGO, Foundation or any NSI that has significant contributions
to our society by supporting some of the government programs, Write the name, nature,
founder, and advocacies. You can ask your parents, guardians, or anybody in your family
that have the knowledge or experience with NGOs. If not you can propose an NGO based from
the learnings you have from this module. Use the example given for your reference
