1.Objectives:
At the end of this lesson students will be able to :
1. Convert between units of area .
2. Derive and use formulae for the area and perimeter of a
rectangle.
3. Calculate the perimeter and the area of compound shapes
made from rectangles.
4. Calculate the volume of cuboid.
5. Calculate the surface area of cubes and cuboids from their
nets.
2. Refreshment
What is area ?
o The area is the amount of space occupied by a two-dimensional
shape or figure , its measured in square unit.
What is perimeter ?
o Is the total distance around the outside of the shape .
What is compound shapes ?
o Is made up of simple shapes such as square and rectangles.
What is cuboid?
o A rectangular prism with 6 rectangular faces,8vertices and 12
edges. Cuboid with 6 square faces is called cube .
What is surface area of a cube or cuboid?
o Is the total area of all its faces .
3.Conversion between units of area
Examples: (Cb page 170 , q 18.1)
4.Perimeter and area of rectangles
The formula for working out the area of any rectangle is:
area = length × width or A = l × w
The perimeter can be found by adding the lengths of all the sides together.
the formula for working out the perimeter of any rectangle is:
perimeter = 2 × length + 2 × width or P = 2l + 2w
Examples : (cb page 172, q 18.2 n,1 )
Examples : (cb page 172 n,6)
5.Area and perimeter of compound shapes
Method 1 Method 2
Area A = 6 × 2 =12cm2 Area A = 2 ×2 = 4cm2
Area B = 4 × 4 =16 cm2 Area B = 6 × 4 =24 cm2
Total area = 12 + 24 = 28 cm2 Total area =4 +24 =28 cm2
Examples: cb page 174(2,3)
Find the area of the blue section in this diagram :
Area of large rectangle = 30 × …….= …….. cm2
Area of hole = 8 × …….= ………. cm2
Blue area = …..– ……..=……… cm2
6.Volume of cuboids
volume = length × width × height or V = l × w × h
Unit of measurement : cubic millimeters (mm3 )cubic meters (m3 ).
Examples: (cbpage176 q18.4 n 1,4
7.Surface area of cubes and cuboids
the surface area of a cube or cuboid is the total area of all its faces.
The units of measurement for surface area are square units.
this cube has six faces.
the area of one face = 2 × 2 = 4 Cm2
the surface area of the cube = 6 × 4= 24 Cm2
