a curious fact
it is,

that

among

us,
in-

English-speaking people, scholarly


vestigation
classic lore

has

clung rather to

the

and mythology of Greece

and Rome, than and

to the less classic, but far purer

truer religion of the North.

It is

much

to

be deplored that so

slight a

knowl-

edge of Scandinavian Mythology


with those

prevails, popularly,

who

boast descent from

that in their veins

flows the blood that long ago thrilled through the

bold hearts of the Vikings, descendants of the old

Norse-Gods.

enervated by luxury; one by one they forced her

conquests from her, plunging Europe into a state


of semi-barbarism, only to raise

her up

through their stronger northern natures, and purer

a higher degree of enlightenment;

infusing through

frame, their
