Lesson Plan in Mathematics VI

Mean, Median, Mode

I. Objectives
At the end of the, the pupils are expected to:
a. To define mean, median and mode in the word definition;
b. To investigate what means to find the mean, median and mode, and;
c. To describe the importance and application of mean, median, and mode towards
another student.

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Mean, Median and Mode
b. References: https://www.education.com/lesson-plans/

Realistic Math 6, Scaling Greater Heights K to 12 (Second Edition)

c. Materials: Crumpled paper, and Power Point Presentation

III. Procedure/Developmental Activities

A. Preparatory Activities

 Warm Up Songs:
Sing “Mean, Median, and Mode” Song

Mean, Median and Mode

How do you find the Mean?
Add all the numbers in the data set, divide the
total by the number of items
The answer is the mean or average

Mean, Median and Mode Sing all together

But how do you find the Median?
Arrange the numbers in order from the lowest to
highest values
The middle number is the median for an odd
numbers of items
The average of the middle numbers is the median
for an even number of items

Mean, Median and Mode

How do you find the Mode?
Just find the number that repeats most often and
that number is a Mode
If you find no number that repeats most often
then there is No Mode
Mean, Median and Mode
Reflect: How to find the mean, median and mode
 What is the song all about?
 What does the song tells?
 What do you think the importance of
Mean, Median and Mode?

 Review of the past lesson

 Checking of the Assignment

B. New Lesson/Lesson Proper

 Motivation Rumble Letters

Rumble Letters
The students will be divided into three groups
to guess the word on the picture provided.
1. Mean Answer: Average
The first group will be the one to correctly
guess the first image.

2. Median Answer: Median

Followed by the second group.

3. Mode Answer: Many

Lastly, will be the group 3.

Good job students!

Let’s give everyone a Fireworks Clap!
 Introduction
 Good day Class! So do you have any Student: Mean, Median and Mode Ma’am.
idea now what would our lesson be?
 That’s correct!
 So, today's class is all about the
Central Tendencies in Statistics.
They are called the Mean, Median
and Mode.
 We will start with the Mean.
 Presentation/Discussion
Mean
 The mean class is the average of all the elements
in the set.
Formula:

x=
Ν
 What do you think the formula class?
 Okay, where as ∑ x is the sum of all the values of
the elements, and N is the total number of
elements in the set.
 Bring out your scratch paper and we will solve
for you to practice getting the mean.
Example 1:
I'd want you to determine Ms. Nikka's average
allowance for the first week of April.

Given:
Monday - P80.00
Tuesday - P90.00
Wednesday - P75.00
Thursday - P70.00
Friday - P150.00
Saturday - P150.00
Sunday - P50.00 Student: We have 7 numbers Ma’am

Class try to look at our given dates, how many number

(N) do we have?

That’s right!
Everyone try to answer our given data on your scratch
paper.

Some are still answering but let’s try to answer it here on

the board.
The complete given is:
∑ x = P665 and N= 7
Now, apply the formula to get the mean.
80+90+75+ 70+150+150+50
x=
7

665
x=
7
Student: Our mean Ma’am is P95.00
x=95

So what our mean now?

That’s correct, our mean is equal to P95.00

Let’s proceed to our example no. 2

Example 2:
The grades of a College student at CPU are, 90, 97,
95, 93, 90 and 98. Determine the arithmetic mean of his
grades. I will give you 10 mins to solve this class .
90+97 +95+93+ 90+98
x=
6

563
x=
6

x=93.8∨94

Median
 What do we mean when we say median, any idea
class?
 According to the given clue to our 4 pics 1 word? Student: Ma’am it is the middle term of the
given data.
 Excellent!

 Median it is the Center of the elements, which

represents as MD. It is the value of the middle
term when the data are arranged in ascending or
descending order.

 Take note, the median is affected by the numbers

of items, not by the size of extreme values.

 But before I present to you the steps on how you

will get the median. Who can still remember the
odd and an even numbers?
Student: Ma’am an odd numbers are 1, 3, 5
 Correct! and so on, while even numbers are numbers
divisible by 2.
 Let’s proceed to the steps.

STEPS IN GETTING THE MEDIAN

1. Arrange the data in the array of ascending
or descending order.
2. Take note of the elements in the middle. If
there are an odd number of items, the
median is the middle item.
3. If the number is an even number, the
median is determined by the arithmetic
mean values that lie in the middle.

Continuation of the Examples:

Unarrange Arrange
80 50
90 70
75 75
70 80
150 90
150 150
50 150

Given:
Monday - P80.00
Tuesday - P90.00
Wednesday - P75.00
Thursday - P70.00
Friday - P150.00
Saturday - P150.00
Sunday - P50.00

 If the given is odd number, then what is our Student: 80 Ma’am

median?
 Now, if the given numbers are in even numbers,
we must first arrange then get the 2 middle terms
then divide it by 2.
Example:

The grades of a College student at CPU are, 90, 97, 95,

93, 90 and 98. Find the median of the given terms.

Given:
90, 97, 95, 93, 90 and 98

95+93
Md =
2
188
Md =
2
Md = 94 Student: Yes Ma’am
Understand class? Student: None Ma’am
Do you have any question?
Mode
 Listen pupils, do you that the mode is most-
easiest to get of all the 3?
 Why? Because mode is the most frequently
occurring value in a given set of data. You simply
need to assess the data provided and no
calculations are required.
Example:
1.
Given:
Monday - P80.00
Tuesday - P90.00
Wednesday - P75.00
Thursday - P70.00
Friday - P150.00
Saturday - P150.00
Sunday - P50.00 Student: P150 Ma’am
 So for our first example, what are the frequently
occurring value?
 Correct! Easy right? Okay more example.
2. The grades of a College student at CPU are, 90, Student: 90 Ma’am
97, 95, 93, 90 and 98. Determine the mode of the
grades.
 Awesome! Let’s give ourselves an awesome clap!

 Hands on Activities

2. Calculate the grades of SHS at CPU such

as 93, 95, 96, 96, 98 and 92. Find the
median of the given data.
Answer:
Given:

Md = 96

3. Rica has a data of what she eat for the past

7 days for her lunch.
What is the food she mostly eat for her
lunch?
Lumpia

Jollibee

Answer: Jollibee

 Generalization

Median
It is the Center of the elements, which
represents as MD. It is the value of the middle
term when the data are arranged in ascending
