Tissue Notes

The document summarizes plant tissues and includes questions about meristematic tissue, conducting tissues, and other plant tissues. It discusses the characteristics and functions of meristematic tissue, including its location in plant tips and buds. It also describes the roles of xylem and phloem as the main conducting tissues, with xylem transporting water and minerals upwards and phloem transporting food throughout the plant.

SUBJECT-BIOLOGY
CHAPTER 1- TISSUES
PLANT TISSUE

Q1) FILL IN THE BLANKS

1) Meristematic tissue consists of thin-walled and actively dividing cells.
2) Lateral meristems provide girth to the stems.
3) Parenchyma consists of cells with star-shaped intercellular spaces.
4) Parenchymatous cells that contain chlorophyll are called Chlorenchyma
5) Water in plants is conducted through Xylem.
6)Food in plants is transported through Phloem.
7) Cells with similar structure and function are called tissue
8) In plants, the cells of meristematic tissue divide continuously
9) The Collenchyma cells of plants are living and thickened at corners.
10) Xylem and Phloem are conducting tissues in plants.

B) TRUE OR FALSE
1) Sclerenchyma cells are dead cells-True
2) Intercellular spaces are present in collenchyma-False
3) Phloem helps in upward conduction of water-True

B) ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS IN DETAIL.

1) Where is meristematic tissue located in plants? What are its

characteristics?
Ans. Meristematic tissues are found in many locations, including near the
tips of roots and stems (apical meristems), in the buds and nodes of stems,
in the cambium between the xylem and phloem in dicotyledonous trees
and shrubs, under the epidermis of dicotyledonous tress and shrubs and in
the pericycle of roots, producing branch roots.
The characteristics of meristematic tissue are as follows:
a) The cells are living and small in size.
b) The cells have thin walls.
c) The cells are rich in cytoplasm and have a distinct nucleus.
d) There is no space between the cells.
e) The cells divide actively, thus helping the plants to grow rapidly.

2) Describe the function of conducting tissues in plants.

Ans. Xylem and phloem are conducting tissues.
Xylem- Xylem is mostly made up of dead cells. One of the cells in xylem
tissue vessels which make-tube like structure.
The functions are as follows:
a) Xylem is present from the root to the tip of the plants and is concerned
with the conduction of water and minerals upwards from the roots of
the plants to the leaves.
b) Movement of water in xylem is unidirectional.
Phloem- Phloem is mostly made up of living cells. It is made up of long
tubular conducting channels called the sieve tubes with perforated cell walls.
The functions are as follows:
a) Phloem helps in the transportation of dissolved food to various parts of
the plant from the leaves.
b) Movement of food in phloem is bidirectional, that is, food moves both
upwards and downwards throughout the plant body.
c) It also helps in storage of food.
