OptiFlash® Introduction
To determine the flash point, the test cup is filled up to a particular marking
with the sample. The sample is heated at a constant rate of heating whilst
being continuously stirred.
A small gas flame or electric igniter is immersed in the cup at regular
intervals, during which stirring is interrupted.
32 UM Abel_V1.0B_EN
Introduction OptiFlash®
The flash point is defined as the lowest temperature of the liquid at which
the vapour above the sample ignites as a result of the introduction of the
flame.
The test procedures are standardized and laid down in the above-
mentioned standards (see 3.3 Applicable standard test methods).
The measurement period is from approx. 30 to 60 minutes, depending on
the flash point of the material. With manual measurement, high
requirements are set of the laboratory technician carrying out the
measurement, both in respect of the handling of the sample (avoidance of
loss of volatile substances, precise observation of the flash point) and of
the subsequent cleaning of the equipment.
When using this test equipment the operator's only task is to place the test
cup in the heating block, fill it with the sample and remove the test cup
once measurement is complete. It is necessary to pay attention to the
standards while preparing the sample.
The OptiFlash® OptiFlash® automatic flash point analyzers are designed to simplify the
Flash Point testing of hydrocarbon and other chemical samples using the Abel or other
Analyzer series closed cup test methods.

Sample The sample temperature probe is a Pt100 IEC751 Class-A platinum probe
temperature probe with a built-in memory chip including probe correction values. This means
the OptiFlash® automatically recognizes the probe and imports data at
plug-in to its connector on the front of the OptiFlash®. There is no need to
manually enter probe correction values and probe ID. Up to 10 calibration
points can be memorized (2 calibration points as standard).
Flash point The automatic flash point detection sensor consists of a stainless steel
detection sensor jacket with a thermocouple at the lower end to detect temperature
differences.
UM Abel_V1.0B_EN 43
OptiFlash® Description
Shutter plate The test cup-cover insert has a shutter plate which opens a window to
allow the igniter to dip into the sample. The instrument's shutter device
connects with the linkage on the shutter plate while a test is initiated.
During the test, the shutter device opens and shuts the igniter window
periodically. This is carried out fully automatically and controlled by the
internal software of the OptiFlash®, according to the test method
requirements for the currently running test.
Bead as reference Upon the cover there is a bead mounted. The bead is a reference mark to
mark for flame decipt the size of the gas igniter flame (3.6 mm to 4.1 mm), as required by
size adjustment the standard.
Electric igniter The OptiFlash® can be operated with either an electric igniter or an
optional gas igniter.
Gas igniter OptiFlash® instruments with gas igniter option provide a connection for
external gas sources at the rear side of the housing as well as a
connection for the gas igniter itself at the front side of the housing.
To operate the gas igniter, the use of propane/butane gas is
recommended.
When using a gas igniter, an electric igniter must additionally be installed.
This is because the control of the OptiFlash® detects if the gas flame
extinguishes during a test. In that case the electric igniter will immediately
be actuated to reignite the flame.
If a fire extinguisher is installed (only High End and Standard Model), the
UV sensor on the right hand side is the gas flame detector.
Without a fire extinguisher option (Basic Model) the gas flame detection is
enabled by a change in resistance of the electric igniter.
Stirrer The stirrer is driven by the stirrer drive which is located in the automatic lift
arm of the OptiFlash®. The stirrer shaft works as the link for both, stirrer
and drive. As soon as the test cup-cover insert is connected to the
automatic lift arm, the stirrer is also connected with the stirrer drive and
ready for a test.

OptiFlash® Description
4.3 Features
Internal cooling All Abel OptiFlash® models include internal cooling devices (Peltier
system element and fan) to cool down the heating/cooling block, test cup, cover
and sample.
Liquid cooling Abel OptiFlash® High End Models have an additional liquid cooling circuit.
system In conjunction with an external liquid circulation cooler coolant flows
around the heating/cooling block and cools down the Peltier element in
addition. Liquid cooling is recommended for samples with expected flash
points below 10 °C (50 °F).
Fire extinguisher Built-in ultraviolet fire sensors alert you instantly to flames outside the test
system cup. The system detects a fire time of 5 seconds minimum and triggers a
visual and acoustic fire alarm. A fixed gas-based fire suppression system
will be activated, if necessary.
After a fire alarm, switch off and restart the instrument.
4.3.3 Alarms/Warnings
Alarms/Warnings are accompanied by an audio alarm buzzer. They
remain visible as long as the default persists; even if the alarm has been
acknowledged.
Alarms warn the operator in the event of a malfunction whether the Flash
Point Analyzer is in test or in idle:
• detection of a default during the test run
• component failure detection
• detection of a safety state (either absolute or fixed by the user)
WARNING
When the alarm buzzer is triggered, the operator must display the cause
and ensure that safety features are working correctly, in general.
When a test is stopped the following occurs (if a power supply cut-off has
not already occurred):
46 UM Abel_V1.0B_EN
Description OptiFlash®

• control and monitor PAC instruments;
• collect and archive test data;
• perform and report on test results and trends;
• provide analysis of collected result data;
• connect to external Lab Information Management Systems (LIMS).
IRIS® collects test results from your PAC instruments and stores this data
in an SQL database.
With the integrated online manager you can define your operation, tests
and instruments. You can also specify users, access privileges and test
result parameters.
The workbench, a further component of IRIS®, communicates with the
instruments: it controls the execution of tests and gathers and analyzes
real-time data.
Each PAC instrument has a PAC instrument plug-in associated with it.
Instrument plug-ins extend the functionality of the workbench by providing
features that are specific to the corresponding instrument.
IRIS® comes in two versions:
• a stand-alone version
• a Client-Server version

6.1.1 Safety
This instrument has been carefully designed, manufactured and
inspected for quality. It has been equipped with a number of safety
features.
However, the use of this instrument may involve the handling of solvents,
chemicals, and other potentially dangerous flammable, toxic, etc.
materials.
Always exercise caution when handling these materials while operating
the instrument.
• read the manual
• wear proper protective clothing
• perform all suggested service procedures
• handle with care to prevent accidents
WARNING
The sample materials can be dangerous. Risk of poisoning, irritation or
burns!
• Wear proper protective clothing when handling solvents, chemicals,
and other potentially dangerous flammable, toxic, etc. materials.
• Handle all solvents, chemicals and other potentially dangerous
materials with care.
• The operator needs to have training about potential hazards, before
operating the system.

Operation OptiFlash®
WARNING
A damaged electric igniter may cause a risk of fire!
• If using an electric igniter, always check it for mechanical or other
damage, prior to starting the test. A damaged igniter may mean that
the ignition process is not carried out properly and consequently,
that the flash point is not determined correctly or determined at all.
• The fact that no flash point is determined may lead the operator to
assume, that the flash point of the sample is higher than the actual
value and therefore to choose a higher expected flash point. This
could result in the self-ignition of the sample – risk of fire!
WARNING
The test cup and test cup-cover insert may be hot. Risk of burns!
Take care when removing hot parts.
NOTE
The temperature of the heater block, test cup and sample must not be
higher than specified in the standards.

6.2 Sampling
6.2.1 Pre-cooling
The standard of the applicable test method may require to cool down test
equipment and sample prior to starting a test.
The required temperatures can be found in the standard.
External sample Adjust the external cooling system (e, g. a refrigerator), if required.
pre-cooling Follow the procedure as described in the standard to cool down test
equipment and sample.
Internal sample The OptiFlash® includes internal cooling devices to cool down the heating/
pre-cooling cooling block, test cup, cover and also the sample.
The internal sample pre-cooling function can be enabled or disabled
individually for each custom product in the product database, see 7.4.1.
View parameter details of the products and 7.4.2. Add new custom
products.
(Remark: Internal sample pre-cooling does not comply with the standard.)
High End Models can additionally be connected to an external liquid
circulation cooler. If a liquid cooler is connected or not must be configured
in the instrument setup database, see 7.7.1. Instrument Parameters /
7.7.1.9. Device settings.

an external liquid cooling device. If the instrument does not recog-
nize a liquid cooling device, a warning message appears stating that
liquid cooling is recommended.
NOTE
Manually entered or changed test parameters are only valid for the sub-
sequent measurement. Permanent changes to the parameters must be
made in the products database. Regarding permanent changes of test
parameters see chapter 7.4. The Products database
Pretest For safety reasons, a pretest is recommended when tests are carried out
on samples for which the expected flash point is unknown.
NOTE
The pretest button on the Run/Start test screen is only visible if the pre-
test question parameter in the products database is activated for the
selected product. When deactivated, the pretest button is not displayed
on the Run/Start test screen and the expected FP button is then
extended over the entire width. See chapter 7.4. The Products database.
