Course: Mechanical Testing of Materials

Title of the Experiment: Fatigue Test

TITLE OF THE EXPERIMENT
FATIGUE TEST
Aim:
To determine the endurance limit of given specimen in fatigue test.
Apparatus:
Fatigue test apparatus (WP140 Gunt Hamburg) , Test Specimen.
Student Learning Objectives
The student will be able to
Define fatigue fracture in engineering applications
Determine endurance limit of the given specimen
Recommend the design consideration related to fatigue limit of the given material.
Theory:
Fatigue is the progressive, permanent structural change that occurs in materials
subjected to fluctuating stresses and strains that may result in cracks or fracture after a
sufficient number of fluctuations.
Fatigue Failure:
Fatigue fractures are caused by the simultaneous action of cyclic stress, tensile stress
and plastic strain
Fatigue Process: Fatigue process consists of three stages namely 1) crack initiation 2)
Crack Propagation 3) Sudden failure of the specimen.
Fatigue life: The fatigue life of any specimen or structure is the number of stress
(strain) cycles required to cause failure.
S-N Curves. The results of fatigue crack initiation tests usually are plotted as
maximum stress, minimum stress, or stress amplitude to number of cycles, N, to
failure using a logarithmic scale for the number of cycles.
Fatigue limit or endurance limit: The material can endure an infinite number of
cycles without failure.

Specimen Details:

Material: Steel.
Bar Diameter: 8mm
Total bar length: 146mm
Fillet radii: R2 and R0.5
Surface Finish Quality of the radii: Rz4.0,Rz25,
Clamping pin: Dia.12X40mm
Fatigue Test Apparatus:

1. Procreative cover, 2.Electric motor, 3.Switch box, 4.Tools, 5.Specimens, 6.bearing,

7. clamped specimen, 8.load application device with spring balance and hand wheel.

Procedure:
1. The Standard specimen is used according the dimensional requirement.

2. The specimen is introduced into the specimen holder and it is hold on the clamping
pin of the specimen in the fatigue testing machine.
3. Required force is given by load application device by means of spring balance and a
movable support.
4. Rotating cylindrical specimen is subjected to single force which is kept in a
cantilever position.
5. Specimen is subjected to pure reverse bending stress.

6. After certain number of load cycles, specimen brakes due to material fatigue.

7. Number of cycles can be monitored on the digital display on Switch box.

8. The experiment is repeated for different specimens.

9. The observations are registered in tabular column.

10. The SN curve is drawn using semi-log graph.

11. The graph is analyzed to calculate the endurance limit of the specimen.
