Layer styles allow applying effects to layers with a click. Photoshop provides effects like shadows, glows, and strokes. When an effect is applied to a layer, an "fx" icon appears by the layer. Custom styles can be saved as presets and applied to other layers. Drop shadows make layers appear raised from the background. Inner and outer glows emphasize layers by adding glows inside or outside the layer.

Layer styles let you quickly apply
effects to a layer's content. You can scan
through a variety of predefined layer styles and apply a style with just a click of the mouse, or you can create a custom style by applying multiple effects to a layer. Photoshop and ImageReady provide a variety of effects such as shadows, glows, bevels, overlays and strokes that let you quickly change the appearance of a layer's contents. Layer effects are linked to the layer contents. When a layer has a style, an "fx“ icon appears to the right of the layer's name in the Layers panel. You can expand the style in the Layers panel to view all the effects that comprise the style and edit the effects to change the style. When you save a custom style, it becomes a preset style. Preset styles appear in the Styles panel and can be applied with just a click of the mouse. Drop shadow effect lets you make an image like it was raised from the canvas. It makes a simple image into a semi 3d effect. It’s one of the most basic powers of Photoshop. To add a drop shadow effect: 1. Double click the layer you want to affect and the Layer style dialog box will appear. 2. Click the Drop Shadow option then play with the settings to get the right amount of shadow for your text. 3. On the Layer Style dialog box, choose the drop shadow effect by how the drop shadow appears or how long or short the shadow will be. 4. To remove the drop shadow effect, go to the Styles panel and choose the box with the red line which means cancel. Click the Text tool ( ) from the toolbar as to get in the typing mode. This will bring up a Tools option bar for text. Select the text color from the tool options bar by clicking the color picker icon and selecting the color you like. Select your font from the Font Family and the Size of the font in pixels. Type your letters in the font you want and the main color you want on your canvas. The thicker the text is, the better the bevel The thicker the text is, the better the bevel.
Double click on the text layer on your Layers
panel to bring up the Blending Options dialog box. To Add Inner Shadow: • On the Layer Style panel click on the label name for Inner Shadow. You will see a panel that looks like the figure provided. Select the options you want for your text. • Arrange the panel where you can see your text to preview your selections as you go. When you made the shadow you want, adjust all the options, and then click ok. Outer glow is yet another powerful trait of Photoshop. It lets you emphasize something giving it an Outer Glow. Do the following: • Click on the “fx” icon in the bottom of the Layers panel and choose specifically the effect you want to apply. • Choose Outer glow. • Adjust the layer effects and choose a different color. • Choose a pinkish color instead of the default yellow. • Add any other effect to the same layer by clicking on it with the checkbox. • Experiment around with each of these and get comfortable in having an idea of what they can do.
